2023-24 Former Cyclones Now at Other Schools Tracker

@Cyinthenorth, does Jayden Nunn count?

He was committed to play for Prohm at one point.

We'll see him with Baylor this season.

You also didn't list thou-who-shall-not-be-named down in Austin.

;)
Haha I honestly don't know how I forgot TH. That is incredible.

Nunn crossed my mind a few weeks back when I started thinking about this thread, but I had forgotten since then. Was he ever even enrolled at ISU? Crazy to think that he's actually been pretty good so far and TJ didn't even think to reach out to him when he got to Ames, even though he had committed.

I consider not at least trying to retain Nunn a small (a very small one) blunder on TJ's part.

Nunn was pretty good for VCU. Good defender, shot 40/99 (40.4%) from three last year.

He was good enough in the A10 that Scott Drew wanted him for the Big 12.

Seems like the bulldog type/3&D guard that would fit right in with what TJ is trying to do.

We were really short on guards late last year after the William's injury, Green bailing at the last minute, Grill being dismissed from the team, and Eli King not being a viable player in the Big 12. We were down to Lipsey (thank goodness he was healthy after the ACL tear) and Holmes and Kalscheur and that was it.

Having Nunn for some depth there would have been valuable. A guy like Gilbert or Paveletzke is probably a 1:1 replacement, so I don't think we'll miss him this year, but he might have been worth keeping.

Yeah, agree he would have been very nice to have last year. Not sure how much he would've played the year prior behind Kalscheur and Brockington.

Regardless he will be one to keep an eye on this year. Revenge will probably be on his mind.

Yeah, he's probably stuck behind Hunter, Kalscheur, Brockington, and Grill as a freshman.

He probably ends up being a piece as a sophomore, though, especially after all the injuries and departures. He probably obliviates the need for one of the three transfer guards this past spring, and I would imagine we would anticipate him having a big role next year. Scott Drew knows what he's doin'.

By the way, I'm more bullish on Hunter's role for Texas this year than you are.

Last year he definitely wasn't "the man" like he would have been in Ames. But... got paid... played in the second weekend... hard to imagine he's too disappointed by a small step down in the minutes he might have played as a Cyclone during his sophomore season. But a lot of minutes cleared out for him this offseason.

Torvik has him leading the team in minutes and scoring --

Hunter and Abmas is going to be a powerful 1-2 on both offense and defense.

He's probably doin' fine... rollin' in the dough and Texas cuties and playing on a team that has legitimate ambitions towards winning the Big 12 and making another deep run in the NCAA tournament (not as likely as Kansas and Houston but Texas is going to be good)... not sure he misses Beard... not sure if they had any real relationship outside of the transaction and Beard is known to be an ******* anyways...

Yeah. He's turning into the ex- who dumped you and went on to prosper.

Just have to tip your cap and move on.

Caleb Grill, Missouri - The former Big 12 First-Team All Hustle picks up his ball and takes it to down to Columbia, where he will start his final season of collegiate ball tonight against UAPB from the SWAC at 7 PM

I will be curious to compare Grill at Mizzou to Curtis Jones this year. I think that is who is essentially replacing Caleb's role and projected spot.

Obviously a benefit to CuJo is he will have next year to play whereas Grill is out of eligibility.

I did not realize the roster situation at Texas. I figured Carr was gone, but thought Rice had another year and Hunter would be playing second fiddle to him. Also thought the addition of Abmas would eat into Tyrese minutes and production, but given what Torvik is saying, Tyrese must be dead set on trying to play the 2. I don't see how that gets him into the NBA, but maybe he is ok with just getting a bag of cash or two and being a good, maybe potentially great college guard. Unless Texas plans to use Abmas and Tyrese interchangeably at PG? Idk, I hate Texas but that will be a fun situation to monitor.

The first former Cyclone has completed his first game of the 2023-24 season:

Darlinstone Dubar goes for 17 pts, 4 rebs as Hofstra crushes St Joes Long Island 101-48. He was the 2nd leading scorer on 8/11 fgs. I'd be curious to see if he would ever try to transition back to P5 for what I believe would be his final season NEXT year.

I agree he’s not regretting the decision and making good money. So I’m not hating on him.

A little early to say he’s prospering though (other than financially). He played better at the end of the year but really struggled during for the majority of the season compared to expectations.

He averaged 36% from the field and 35% from 3 in conference play. He had 38 assists during Big 12 play, which ranked 19th in the conference (as a starter mind you). He was second on the team in TOs, only 6 behind Timmy Allen, who finished with 26 more assists on the year. I know on the Texas forums there was serious disappointment in his play throughout much of the season.

It will be interesting to see how he plays as an upperclassman now.

I think Abmas and Hunter play together a lot.

Sort of a "each is a 1.5" or two-PG (well CG) situation.

Texas doesn't have many guards. Those two are going to play a lot.

Well we got to see what Eli King looked like in his first D1 start against Iowa. He went 1-9 with 4 turnovers and 2 points. Seems like it was probably a good decision to move down a level but hope he’s able to develop.

I agree with that assessment. End of the day, it was still a game against P5 talent (sort of), so just kind of more of what we've seen. As the schedule softens, we will hopefully see him take some strides the right direction. He was going against Tony Perkins who is in his 4th year of college and will probably compete for 3rd or possibly 2nd team All Big 10 this year.

funny, I was watching the Baylor game Monday and saw Nunn playing and thought that name is relevant to ISU somehow but never connected the dots that he was a THAT Jayden Nunn.
Guess he'll get his chance to play in Hilton after all - full circle.

Kudos for putting this thread together so we can follow these players with Cyclone Ties.
Hope they all do well (except if they play ISU)

Haven't had time to update this like I thought I would yet, just thought I'd drop a few notable performances here:

Darlinstone Dubar went off for 30 points yesterday in a big Hofstra win over Buffalo. 12/16 from the floor including 5/9 from 3 pt.

Tyrese Hunter went for 13, 7 assists, and 5 reb in a 10-point Texas loss to (5) UConn yesterday.

On Saturday, Tre Jackson scored all 15 of his point from 3 (5/10 for the game) as Western Carolina improved to 4-0. They also have a 10-point win over Notre Dame.

Good for two out of those three...
