***2023-24 College Football Thread***

I really think playoff selection should tend towards the "most accomplished" teams rather than the teams that we think are the "best," especially when it concerns undefeated teams. If FSU played Alabama today, do I think that FSU would win? Probably not. But who am I to say that? They haven't lost to anybody, so they very well might be better than Alabama, especially considering how few non-conference matchups there are in football to compare conference strength.

I've also been thinking about this hypothetical:
Suppose Mississippi State played Alabama's schedule this season and had the exact same performance. Would there be any chance that they would be considered for a spot over a team that beat them? I doubt it. (For added fun, do the same with Georgia, replacing them with another SEC East team like South Carolina. There would be zero chance that they would've been ranked #1 going into this weekend, and thus the SEC Championship win would look less impressive.)

You are 100% right. No one was giving TCU a chance against Michigan last year. Look what happened. FSU’s D is elite

Ohio State was on QB #3 when they won a Natty and got their clocks cleaned by VT in a noncon.
FSU seems to be much more scrutinized for some reason.
Ohio State wasn’t in the way of keeping the SEC out of the playoff. There’s the big difference.

Georgia and Bama combine to beat Auburn by 10 points.
Auburn gets killed by New Mexico State.
Liberty beats NMS by 14 points.
Just sayin.

I want the top four that the BCS computers would have picked. Has anyone seen that projection?

Computers were 1/3 and it was 8 models averaged with high/low thrown out. Massey composite averages like 50 but probably similar.

This morning Massey avg has sec out but also fsu out

Michigan
Ohio st
Texas
Washington
Georgia
Bama
Fsu

So that computer component likely wouldn’t have helped sec or fsu that much. It definitely would help Texas. It’s always the case that computers have helped big 12 because of the obvious media biases.

Eyeball test should not be used. Even people that gave TCU a shot thought Michigan would dominate both sides in the trenches. Those people were totally wrong. Ever since everybody’s eyeball test said in 06 or 07 that OSU and Michigan were absolutely the two best teams, but Florida squeaked in the title game only because enough people didn’t want to see a rematch, we should learn.

Turns out Florida so thoroughly dominated OSU that you would be a fool to think OSU and Michigan were two of the best 5 teams. Everybody’s eyeball test was drastically wrong.

Use the data that’s there. It’s hard enough to get relevant data points in CFB with so few head to heads or even common opponents. So when you have FSU 2-0 vs the SEC, 13-0 overall, and winning an ACC that even outside of FSU went 4-4 vs the SEC, you have to give them a nod.

If you go undefeated in a P5 you should be in. With the playoff expanding next year I wonder if the committee changes up their "criteria" to get Bama or Georgia in knowing they won't have to be logically consistent going forward with a totally different playoff

Man! There are some great schadenfreude scenarios that are real possibilities. The $EC gets left out… glorious. Big 12 gets representation albeit with Texa$, but the Big 12 gets that sweet, sweet money… I’ll take it. Texas wins this year, barf, but they head to the $EC entitled, pompous, and demanding… pretty nice. Texa$ acts their normal turd-in-the-punch-bowl way, $EC deteriorates… wonderful.

Come on committee! Set some good things in motion!

The media really needs to check themselves on their SEC worship right now. They just refuse to accept the idea that just once the SEC should be left out of the playoff. The B1G, ACC, B12, and Pac have all had years where they didn't have a team in the playoff. Surely it is reasonable that once every decade or so the SEC would be the one left our.

FSU ran the table and took down two SEC teams in the non con. UT beat Bama by 10 at Bama. They deserve to be in.

The last time Texas won a natty, they tried to blow up a conference. And if the SEC is left out, there is nothing they can do.
