2022 Football post mortem/looking forward

Can you imagine going into this offseason without any major personnel changes in the coaching staff?

We are losing our only WR that can reliably beat man coverage, as well as the all-time sack leader in Big12 history.

So he was supposed to fire an assistant with two weeks left or so and then hire a ST coach? That is pure moronic.

Yes it makes perfect sense to go into the off-season with no changes, doesn’t make sense to ho into the next season with none, but the off season it makes perfect sense.

FWIW, ISU was favored in 5 Conferences games (Baylor, @ KU, WVU, @ OSU and TT), an underdog in 3 (OU, @ TX and @ TCU) and a pick 'em in 1 (K-State). This team simply flopped this year, and it had nothing to do with fan expectations.

Not sure where you got your information from. But in checking each of the schools athletic department websites and looking at the position titles for each of the 11 on-field coaches the NCAA allows, here is the breakdown:

Teams with Dedicated ST Coach
  1. Ohio State
  2. TCU
Teams with ST & Position Coach
  1. Mich - ST & Safeties
  2. Bama - ST & OLB
  3. Tenn - ST & OLB
  4. PSU - ST & OLB
  5. Clemson - ST & CB
Teams ST Not Assigned
  1. Georgia
  2. USC
  3. KSU

A couple of other team coaching notes...Leipold from KU just received a pay raise...doubling his current salary to $7M per year with assistants receiving a combined $3M per year, along with a $300M pledge to upgrade the stadium. NW coach fired a number of assistant coaches, although the coaching seat is as hot as Frost's was this year.

Best coaching deal in the Big 12 by far...KSU with Kleiman...$2.7M per year...plus performance bonuses.

Not a very knowledgeable person to have on a radio show. Or the person has an agenda. Anyone with knowledge of college football coaching staffs, knows that having a dedicated ST coach like Iowa is VERY much the minority since teams can only have 11 coaches, including the Head Coach.

Even is you look at just Big12 schools:

Dedicated ST Coach
  • TCU
Split Responsibilities
  • Texas - Asst HC, TE & ST
  • Texas Tech - Assoc HC, RB & ST
  • Baylor - Safeties & ST
  • Kansas - DE & ST
  • WVU - ILB & ST
No Assigned Coach
  • Oklahoma
  • Oklahoma State
  • ISU
  • Kansas State
We'll see if Campbell changes his approach in the off-season to have ST assigned to a coach. The reality is there isn't a right or wrong approach as long as the results support the approach. Obviously, we all know what ISU is doing today isn't working and hasn't worked for a number of years.

And that comes back to Campbell and his 2 Coordinators. I put the onus on all 3 because Manning has to realize an above average PR & KR team helps his offense. And conversely, Heacock knows great K & P coverage teams help his defense. Field position has a huge impact on a game.

Just because it isn't in their individual bios doesn't mean we don't have a coach assigned to certain ST units.
