2022 Football post mortem/looking forward

Jim Harbaugh at Michigan was as close as you can get to being let go at Michigan a few years ago. He has turned it around and the same fans who wanted him gone are now back on the bandwagon. ISU & CMC are a tier below but similarities can be found on the same timetable as they both arrived at a weak program, built it up and then regressed. I have no idea what Harbaugh did a couple years ago but something changed with his program. CMC needs to study how he turned it around and there is a known relationship between the two coaches.

Yeah, I have wondered about this for years. When the players are fully reliant on the coaches to handle this, is this actually stunting player growth? They never really need to learn to read defenses or truly understand the intricacies of our offensive strategies because they don't have to, they just do what they are told.

It’s just a way some teams roll. CJ Stroud doesn’t audible either. Always gets the call from the sidelines.

I can tell you what changed for Harbaugh, he discovered how to control the pace of games with running. Lots of running plays. That all starts at the OL level.

He went back to his roots of power running and asked his NFL brother what he should do with the defense.

I will never be able to wrap my head around 2021 being such a disappointing year. It was only what...a top 7 season in school history? One of like...5 with a winning conference record? It literally does not matter what preseason polls say. Every year Texas is a top 10 program. We had a bunch of people return...and so did everyone else. 5 of the 6 losses needed one play made to flip the result. In 2020 that play was made. 2021 balanced back to the average. That's the difference between being the predator and the prey.

And it literally doesn't matter if 2020 was aided by COVID for us. You still play the game. Your record doesn't say 9-3 (probably 6-6 or 7-5 in non-COVID year). It's just 9-3.

We all know CMC is a coach speak guy, but I'd imagine he is FUMING on the inside with how we played all year and with the thumping yesterday.

This, I believe, will be an opportunity for him to show his leadership (and likely for the first time he will have pressures from donors, JP, season ticket holders, etc).

What do they say...leadership is easy when things are going well?

And you'd have to think all in the program know things need to change/adjust.

Breece already looks like the best running back in the NFL before be tore his acl. Brock was frustrating at times, but you can't deny he made and NFL roster already. We also had Kolar and Allen who are in the NFL, along with X.

Then you add pretty much the same defense as this year, only with an All-American linebacker and Eisworth who was all Big 12 first team. I think a couple DL made the NFL also.

Last year was a dumpster fire compared to the returning talent level we had. It reminded me of Iowa in 2010 or Prohm when he had the Tyrese, THT, Lindell, Shayok team, full of pro talent but extreme underachieving.

The 2021 team beat one good team all year with a bunch of returning talent from a very nice 2020 season.

Imo the Top Ten ranking was a bit much but it was probably a good enough roster to win 9-10 games. Being fundamentally flawed was a contributing factor.

I’m still trying to figure out why Dekkers gets a pass for this terrible offense…the QB is like the head coach - you get the glory but you get a lot of the blame.

After being hyped up all off-season, the guy laid an egg this year. Turnover machine, can’t read the field, can’t make progressions, can’t run, can’t audible. But he’s got a big arm…

Maybe it’s 100% on the coaches but I highly, highly doubt it.

Defense was much better this year. 2022 defense with 2021 offense, wins 9 or 10 games.

Other problem with 2021 was bad OL. Same as pretty much every year. That is issue #1.

it’s on the offensive line. People need to realize and accept we have one of the worst O-lines in P5. That’s also on the coaches though too.

And the proof is in the pudding. When Brock could play at a decent level we won games. Brock hobbled and/or out. We lose. Need an RB that can at least somewhat overcome the line issues just like Breece and Monty did.

I don’t understand the hate Dekkers gets; he’s being poorly coached. We saw Purdy decline, and Dekkers has been in the system long enough that his base is just artificially lower.

This season would have been completely different if Dekkers had been coached to run/leave the pocket when warranted. With our O-line, standing in the pocket is suicide, and the fact that this remained the strategy over 12 games is coaching malpractice.

I’ve been saying it for years now. The staff just chops the legs and instincts out of the QB. They did it to Purdy and they’ve done it to Dekkers. I don’t know if it’s a “this is what is going to get you to the next level” sell or what, but we need a dual threat QB if this is what our line and receiving corps is going to look like.

I don't know how recruiting goes or what the focus is but I'd rather ISU be really good on the Oline with marginal talent around it in a 'this is always what we do well' approach.

Also kicking. You can't tell me there isn't a good HS soccer player in Iowa that's not good enough for a scholly in soccer, but could get a ride for football.

Absolutely correct, go back and watch Purdy against Oklahoma State in 2018 and compare that with Purdy in 19-21 in any game.

I freaking hate this comparison. He had not been scouted and was inserted on a whim at Okie State against a team with a bad defense. Yes his performance was crazy good and fun but how can anyone think that's just the norm after opposing teams get film?

On the 2018 season, he had Butler to loft it up to even if under thrown. Big difference.
