2022/23 Coaching Staff Changes

Not sure myself, but others have pointed out the S&C coach spends the most time with the players, more than anyone else. Might be something you could only really tell internally?

Our o-line seemed to not really generate any push, but then the d-line had no issues with strength from what I could tell.

That's the only thing I could think of. If Andrews was running a loose ship... some of that mental sloppiness we saw may have been attributed to his style.

There doesn’t need to be a fundamental shift on offense. Just execution.
I respect your opinion, but somewhat disagree.
I think you must revise your scheme to the players you have, or make sure you recruit players to fit your scheme. I imagine we try for the latter, but must adapt to reality.
Example - running three tight ends works when they can catch and block. When they cannot, it just packs the box with defenders.
I do agree our execution was also poor.

I agree. It seems like players/formations/plays got forgotten somehow. Hopefully a complete revamp will help.

Same schemes, maybe but hopefully better execution, And an Offensive line that can fire off the ball. (at the same time);)

Curious what JP will authorize to pay the new OC and S&T.
Andrews was making good money. Assume Manning around a million?

The execution was poor because the design and play calling were atrocious.

The splits on the offensive line were compact. When mixed with a routine mixture of slow developing plays it often meant Dekkers was pressured before most (or in many cases ANY) of his options were open. That fueled some poor decision making that was 100% brought on by schema and play calling (not saying Dekkers was always always without fault but our staff created a situation that snowballed throughout the year).

Probably the first indication we may have that there was an acknowledgment the offense was fundamentally broken is if we start running plays under center. The number of times we attempted 3rd or 4th and less than 1, only to shogun snap EVERY single time was infuriating. Our success rate on such plays was abysmal yet we changed nothing. When your offense is challenged in short yardage situations you don't help the defense by ceding 3-4 yards back the second it's snapped. Run some plays under center, particularly sneaks sneaks, and increase the odds of short yardage conversions.

As you mention, you need to be able to adapt your offense to the talent on the team. Granted, it's the NFL with NFL salaries but the Bears are a prime example. The Oline struggles in pass protection, Fields can be slow with his reads, and the receivers were short on talent. Getsy then tooled the offense around Field's mobility, the running game, and misdirection. He basically took a bottom 5 offense and coaxed top ten offensive production out of the unit (when Fields could play). We need an OC that can do something similar on a smaller scale. Use misdirection, creative play design, and heady play calling to get the MOST out of what your offense has. Manning (and possibly Campbell) handicapped this team the second we snapped the ball. We can't have our coaches be the biggest inhibitors. Iowa State doesn't and will never have the talent to overcome it.
