Usually it's search firms talking to agents to find out who's interested in open jobs. Also agents are always pushing for new jobs and more money.

Agents can talk to other schools without the current AD being notified, by Campbell not having a agent it eliminates that back channel communication. So in order for another school to contact Campbell they have to ask JP permission instead of sidetrackign that and going to his agent.

Because JP asked permission of the Toledo AD,. JP then flew to Toledo in order to talk to Campbell after he arrived home from the Mac Championship game.

So why does agent matter, if he’s interested it’ll get done.

Another team can not talk to Campbell without first notifying JP. If MC had an agent his agent could talk to other teams without JP being notified. Because he doesn't have an agent the last sentence can't happen. So if FSU wanted to talk to MC they would have to notify JP who then could 1) deny them the opportunity or 2) allow it but go ahead and give MC a better offer before FSU could reach him.

You are right if he is interested it would get done, but by him not having an agent and allowing JP to essentially be the gatekeeper for who talks to him it is showing JP that he is not interested in talking to others.

The other much less important aspect of this is by having fewer players in on the process of contacting, negotiating and signing a new coach, the rumor mill is not fed and leaks don't happen.

Not having an agent makes it harder for other schools to get in touch with him. It also means he's likely not seeking out a new job. Pollard had to convince Campbell to even talk with him in the first place. It's a lot easier when you can talk to their agent and lay out your offer to them without having to convince the coach to meet with you in the first place. Any "rumors" you hear are going to be about a school that's interested in him, not the other way around.

You are correct that if a school does want him and contacts him, not having an agent doesn't matter. I think him not having an agent makes it far less likely that he's even going to entertain another job opportunity in the first place.
