NFL: 2014 NFL Draft

So trading for fair trade value to get more picks should get a GM fired on the spot? (on the standard value chart at least) Better let the Patriots know about this. Getting 3 guys instead of 2 that can likely significantly contribute next year is generally a good idea for a team with several holes. The problem for the Vikings is that Clowney and Mack will likely be off the board; Matthews, Watkins, Robinson, and Evans aren't great fits for need (a WR would be okay but not a great top 10 pick when you don't have a QB); both Manziel and Bortles have some question marks and likely won't be around at 8 anyway; so you are left stretching for someone like Barr, Gilbert, or Donald at 8 when you could get a reasonably similar quality prospect in an area of need in Dennard, Kouanjio, Mosley, Shazier, or Verrett in the late teens. I would take a combo like Dennard and Su'a-Filo with 18/30 plus moving doing 10 spots in the second round over just Barr, Gilber, or Donald at 8 any day of the week.
That move should get any GM immediately canned. Especially this year.

In the scenario you described, they aren't gaining any picks. They'd basically be dropping 10 spots in the 1st round to move up 10 spots in the 2nd round, and gaining a late 2nd round pick for giving up a later round slot. No way in hell I'd make that deal. Throw in the fact that Spielman totally sucks after the first round and it's a no-brainer.

The Rams are in a great position with the 2nd and 13th picks. So many great players to pick from. Should be really interesting.

I really like jake matthews, and Sammy Watkins

Paul Allen was on KXNO last night, and he sounds fairly confident that if the Vikes can't trade out of the eight spot, they'll take the best player available and target a QB in the second or third round. He specifically mentioned Mettenberger. That sounds about right, except that I would guess that Zimmer will want a game manager type who won't make a ton of mistakes. I think McCarron might be their best bet. Good size, won't beat his team with bonehead mistakes, and makes quick reads.

Packers need a Safety like no other.

Agreed. M.D Jennings was god awful last year. Thank god he's gone. I'd like to get Clinton Dix, Pryor, or Ward in the first round. C.J Mosley would be alright too, as long as they don't go and draft that tight end from UNC(who many seem to think we will take) I'll be fine.

Most people seem confident they'll take Greg Robinson.

If Kroenke cared at all about keeping the Rams in St. Louis, he'd take Manziel and sell some tickets.

I'd love an impact safety for once as well.

I'm not a Vikings fan, but if I was, I would agree with taking the best player available in the 1st round, and then grabbing Jimmy Grappolo the QB in the 2nd round.

As a Packer fan, I hope they don't do that because I think Grappolo is going to be good. I don't know what it is about him? He has a very quick release, decent size, good accuracy, decent enough mobility. I think his upside is as high as any other QB in this class.

Ideally the Vikings trade back to 15 or so and take the best QB on their board. I have no idea who that is, but I am pretty sure waiting to draft QBs is a historically bad idea, although Kaepernick and Wilson have been recent exceptions to that rule.

Then go pretty much straight defense and sprinkle in a late round back.

If Mack is still there at 8 (he won't be) I'd be totally fine with taking him. Other than that I don't see a real great value there for them to pass up on an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick to move back 7 or 8 spots. And if you are at 15 you are still ahead of all the other teams who need a QB in the top of the 2nd round, and probably to far up for them to jump ahead of you.

Browns are gonna get Johnny Football. I don't know how I feel about that

Well, if you're a Browns fan, then I think I feel for you. Manziel could be a good QB, but I think the odds are surely against it. I love his competitiveness and will to win, but I think it could get him into trouble in the NFL. If he runs too much, I think he will get destroyed. He needs to become the next Russell Wilson type QB to succeed IMO.

If he can use his agility in the pocket and not use it to run all the time instead of throwing, I think he has a good shot.

And I'm not worried about getting hurt, I think he's smart enough not to just go running into NFL LBs and he is quick enough to avoid them or just go down/get out of bounds.

However, if he doesn't do that, he has absolutely no chance of success whatsoever.

We'll see how it goes. He might be the most interesting draft pick in 5+ years if not more.

I think the Bears have to go secondary and dline in the first few rounds. Probably could use a LB. Then maybe look to fill in gaps and get some capable back up for QB, RB.

Also, Minny looking at Manziel scares the **** out of me. Can just see him torching an older, slower bears D next year.

I agree, but only if he goes to a team that can be patient and not throw him right into the fire. Coming from the Ohio Valley Conference is going to be a huge leap in competition, and if he gets thrown out on the field too soon it'll be a disaster.

This is why drafting a QB in the first round is so difficult. Everyone wants them to start and most need some time to develop. There just aren't that many Peyton Manning's out there. He even took some serious lumps his rookie season. If you draft someone in the second or third round there isn't as much outside pressure to start them as a rookie.

I'm not buying Manziel to the Vikings at all. Unless they've thrown up one hell of a good smokescreen, I would think he is the polar opposite of what Mike Zimmer wants from the QB position.

And Norv Turner as well. He loves big armed "prototype" QB. Bortles or Carr would be my guess assuming Bridgewater is gone. I refuse to believe all the Bridgewater hate nonsense. He is my #1 hope.

As a Steelers fan we need a defense that isn't averaging an age of 60. I would love to get Denard from MSU. Defense is our biggest problem right now.

I don't know much about the Browns but I feel like they should use their picks on other positions and try to. build up a team instead of picking a QB every other year and hoping he saves a desperate franchise.

Also, picking a running back 3rd overall was a bone head move.
