2009-2010 Season evaluations

Absolutely he was our worst player. SC, no matter how bad he shot, he keep shooting. Other teams had to still send a defender his way in case he started to hit. MG and CB, well they are much better than DG. JH was a much more dependable and did more for the team than DG. Towards the end of the year LD showed that he had to be reckoned with but ONLY at the end of the season. CC at least TRIED to make things happen, he gets some points for effort. Same goes for DB, points for effort. DG - straight terrible ALL year long. Did NOTHING to help the team.

JH-No he wasn't more dependable. He got himself into foul trouble and some of those times they were stupid fouls. He also struggled with getting blocked.

LD-A lot of his stuff comes from people setting him up. People like DG. He get's himself into good positions then makes the play when it becomes available. He took a terrible shot against UNI which may or may not have cost us that game.

CC-Ya, and the team tried to win games. There is no trying, either you do or don't.

You're right though. He did nothing. He didn't, along with SC win the game in overtime against KSU. He also didn't hit a couple threes in the Big 12 tourney to keep some hope alive while CB was not doing it. He didn't keep us in the Oklahoma game and help us ke that great comeback. To say he has done nothing for the team is incredibly short sighted and ignorant. I wonder if you actually watched any of the games. It alsolutely drives me nuts that everything seems to be pinned on DG with no regard for actual stats or what he does in reality. Everyone who harps on DG will consistently say the same three things and then cannot prove evidence of it. Once someone states that CB disappeared at times for whole halves or at the end of a close game they are immediately told that they cannot say something bad about CB and in fact all of CBs shortcomings for the season should actually fall on DG.

EXACTLY!!

i think cb was basically given a free pass both by fans and by our coach just because he stayed. I felt that his performance had a negative impact to our team, and thanks to cy1010 this observation has some statistical backing looking at cb's +/- when on court and when off court.

face the facts, he did not get it done and he did not make our team play any better. all this talk about how our offense would be better because the other team would double team him leaving someone open has no value, because we simply didn't execute like this. there were so many times i saw cb play matador defense as well. sure ham, strap, dendy were in foul trouble at times, but they never backed down on defense even when in a bad matchup. i've seen cb just let the guard run by him when he should have hedged harder and stopped the penetration, i've seen cb give up defensive rebs. i've seen him not contest his own man's shot. he really could not cover anyone. i can only think of one clutch defensive play cb made and that was the off-the-ball block on houston's star in overtime.

cc has also been way overrated by fans here. i think he will develop into a good player, but again he simply didn't get it done this year. dg was easily our best pg, but i think our best guard court was with dg and buck both in the game. unfortunately this didn't happen often.

There were only about four games this year in conference play where Garrett had a good assist to turnover ratio but most of the time it was either 1 to 1 or less than 1.5 to 1. So most of the time yes Garrett is not very good. He is not a good three point shooter so teams don't have to respect his outside shot. He dribbles way more than he should, which i don't know who to blame him or McD for his stupid offense. He occasionally has a good game like the KState game but those aren't the norm. No one is saying that all of CB's faults are do to Garrett, but he is the PG and he is supposed to be running whatever the heck offense McD runs. So when people aren't getting good looks it is partly his responsibility. Craig had a really bad shooting year and he took some shots that he shouldn't have but part of the time is was do to the fact no one could get him the ball when he had good position. I don't have a problem with Garrett he seems like a nice kid but he is not a good PG. He had 9 games in conference play where he had 3 or more turnovers. and in two games in which he had only 2 turnovers he also only had two assists. so that is what, 11 games out of 15 confrence games with less than steller PG play? So for all the talk about his smart decisions the stats don't show it.

Also, if you want a look at plus/minus for Brackins, and crapload of other stats here's a link... Craig Brackins Stats - Iowa State Cyclones - College Basketball

It doesn't paint a pretty picture.

Take a look at his clutch minutes +/- rating. I don't think it could get any worse than that. Of course, his teammates didn't do much better. I also noticed that his FG% slipped from 18th ranked in conference last year to 36th ranked this year. It's pretty obvious that he wouldn't have made 2nd team All Big 12 if it wasn't for the name recognition he had going into this season.

Obviously, no one who played major minutes is going to have a good plus/minus rating since our record was crap. But, it would be interesting to see who had the best among the top 7 guys in the rotation.

Also, I was getting a little worked up about the grades given out before I sat back and realized how far I've lowered the expectations bar for the ISU program. And it makes me think the same thing is happening among a lot of other people. So much so that if the team goes 17-13 next year some people may see that as improvement and let the program continue down that road.

I think we could be on the precipice of creating a culture of losing which could be very hard to overcome.
