2008 recruits better than expected?

Re: 2009 recruits better than expected?

Good points and I agree. Gmac's UNI teams were never afraid to shoot and looked good doing it(against power conference teams too!). However the only reason he didn't have size was because he couldn't recruit it. Hilton Colisium gives him a tremendous edge in that department. Would a big guy rather play in the UNI dome or Hilton??

As far the 2008 recruits go, it's way too early to tell. They're playing high school ball and as we all know College ball is a lot different.

see this is where ur points turn into my faults as far as the coaching goes, "would a big guy rather play in the uni dome, or Hilton?" my question to that is, why are is Mac and co still recruiting UNI talent, now i know mac's teams at uni faired well against tough competition, but i am just throwing that out there. Now, with that being sad i have been tough on the this team and coaching staff not because of the wins or losses or because of the talent, i am more worried about how it seems as though this team has not improved since we started big 12 play, the teams we beat early beat us the next time around, and also the teams we beat early are teams that are now knocking off better foes, ie okie state, nebraska.

I wasn't aware Greg was recruiting UNI level "talent"...we may occasionally go after a player that has UNI on his list, but for the most part we are competing against bigger competition.

This isn't in reply to anyone specifically, but a general response concerning a pet peeve of mine. Anytime a recruit has a similarity to a previous recruit there's an assumption that the results are the same. Just because a player is from a small town like Eikmeier doesn't mean he can't compete at the D1 level. Just because Mann is similar in size to CJ doesn't mean he won't be a better player. Not every JC PG is Tinsley. Not every four or five star forward recruit will be Fizer. And so on. I haven't seen any of the recruits play, but from the accounts posted on here I'm excited about the incoming freshman and the future of ISU basketball. But let's not jump to conclusions based solely on the athlete's home town, size, number of stars on Rivals, etc.

lets also not jump to conclusions based on what people post on message boards.

sorry if i came across as though i thought mac was only recruiting uni talent, because he isn't, brackins woulda never thought of goin to uni, and same with DG, it was just a point i made based on what he said come to the uni dome, or hilton?

I don't think there is another team in the country that started off in the hole as much as Iowa State did when McD took over. Basically we had 1.5 players to start out with. Clark being the 1 and Hubalek being the .5 I am only giving him .5 because he played out on the perimeter and took way too many 3 point shots. McD turned him into a full 1 and complete player and got him under the basket and how to rebound. He's still not a great player but he's better than when he began. Lucca is a big guard I really like his size, he would have helped out tremendously this year if it wasn't for the damn NCAA. Mike Taylor would have been huge for us too if he would have gone to class and didn't steal cough medicine. Have those two guards and a healthy Johnson and Clark would have gotten us many more wins. I am not concerned at all where this program is going, were just not going to get there as fast as everybody wants.

When the Bulls were winning 2 years ago, the talk was about how they had drafted winners from the collegiate level. Even though they weren't superstars, they knew how to win. Moreover, they expected to win. Other teams were taking notice and following suit.

While I'm not necessarily thrilled about the number of stars next to these players names nor am I wowed by their stats, I am very excited about their level of success at the HS level.

Hamilton wins state championship.

Eikmeier undefeated and favored to win it. (knock on wood)

Mann's team gets upset in districts/regionals and is going to state.

Buckley's team has only three losses and is headed to state.

We're recruiting winners!

How did that turn out for them long term?

I would say Baylor was in worse shape than we are. Most of the team left, then they couldn't play pre-season games for a year. Coach Drew has done a magic trick down there. They will probably go to the tourney this year.

This is a great post! I do like to see us recruiting guys that are used to winning. Guys used to winning have a tough time swallowing defeat and generally do everything in their power to maximize their chances for victory,

How can we evaluate this 2008 class yet? We are still recruiting two more players for this class. Lets wait until the class is finished before we rank it.

Blueprint at ISU so far. It's taken Baylor 4 years to get to this point, and they're doing it mostly with guards and small forward/wing players.

I'm not quite following you here??

My thought process is that Hilton is a vastly better place to play basketball than old UNI dome or even the new McCloud center. Greg could never pull in a Craig Brackins type player into Cedar Falls because of that. He can now because he's great person, coach, and he's got Hilton Magic behind him when he walks into a recruits house.

Hopefully better than Neal.

How many of you knew where you were going to collge as a HS sophmore? Most of us looked around before chosing ISU.

Wes looks to be faster than John Neal. He looks to jump higher also.

My Hope is We Don't Need to Rely on the Recruits

If we need next falls recruits to be a major part of next year's squad, we're in trouble. After we struck out on the highly touted big men we were after, this became a class thats development will need to be measured after their 2nd year and not next season.

Depending on returning players develop- Buckley and Mann might get the most PT and that might only be 10-20mpg each.

That is why a juco big man is not so bad at this point. Perhaps someone like Damien Staples.

so you are reiterating what i stated previously

I don't think we can even begin to judge McD's efforts until he has been here a while with his guys...maybe in 2015 we can start to think about having a critical eye to the program.
