2008 recruits better than expected?

God Bless John Neal,but....HE HAS TO BE BETTER THAN JOHN NEAL!!!!

I'm hoping he's more like a Jake Sullivan, but better.

So your hoping Ike will be a top 15 player in ISU history. Sullivan was on the all century team (I wouldn't have him in) and for him to be better than Sully means he is the next Freddy.

I like all of our recruits except Mann. To me he is another CJ. Hamilton is a project. He will more than likely redshirt next year

Also I don't want to run the guy out of town. I do however want to go into a season without expecting walk on's to carry us the whole season. If the best you can recruit is 2 walk on guys to lead the team every year than we are screwed. So we failed with Appleton, who is the back up JC point guard that we are recruiting. We failed with a big who are we getting to replace him that will make an impact?

Now Now. Mike Taylor and Lucca Steiger we're supposed to fill those slots. Mike pissed in the wind and had to be let go and Lucca NCAA problems were unforseen. Neither one of those are GMac's fault.

I like the guard additions to the class, but I REALLY have a hard time seeing either of the 'bigs' taking us to a top Big 12 finish and competing against the bigs from KU, Texas, Texas AM, OU.

Texas doesn't have a true big and they are doing quite well. Damion James is 6-7 and is their leading rebounder at 10.5 per gaem.

While nice, a true big isn't the end of the world if you have the guard play to make up for it. We need shooters on this team...really bad. I hope Lucca is everything he is cracked up to be. Also Haluska will be a key if he can continue to shoot like he has been.

No, the "best we could recruit" was supposed to be Mike Taylor and Lucca Staiger at those two spots. Mac had to dismiss one, the other was squashed by the NCAA.

Are you really this dumb, or hateful? Or just a transplanted "Fire Steve Alford" Hawkeye fan in need of a cause? If not, feel free to become a Hawk. You won't be missed.

Mac feels that Hamilton can become a quality Big XII big man. He has a good track record with post players, so I have to assume he knows what he's talking about. He offered Eikmeier a year and a half before he could sign--not a last minute, stop-gap player. Mann was a late emerging low post player that several schools were sniffing around. I wish he were taller, but he's more "under-the-radar" than mediocre. And Buckley could start from Day One--he was offered even earlier than Eikmeier.

So your hoping Ike will be a top 15 player in ISU history. Sullivan was on the all century team (I wouldn't have him in) and for him to be better than Sully means he is the next Freddy.

1) Sullivan isn't one of the top 15 players in ISU history. Dear God, it's not even close
2) Sullivan couldn't guard anybody.
3) His senior year he shot about 20% on the road.
4) He's remembered so fondly because nobody stays at ISU for 4 years any more and he did.
5) I loved Jake but if Wes turns out to be better I won't be surprised in the least.

Your the dumb one. You keep buying into something that is not working. We are last in the big 12 right now. LAST and you call me dumb. Feel free to settle for last your whole life. I expect more in my life. I am glad you don't work with me. Actually you would be fired for not trying to be the best and expecting the best.

Could not agree more...

Well we were last in football too and I think the Gymnasic teams isn't too well. We might as well let them all go...

You aren't doing wonders for your credibility here.

Iowa State 4-10 14-15
Colorado 3-11 11-17

:biglaugh: That's why I don't work for anyone else...I'd be the one doing the firing. Guess who? Hint--I prefer people who actually bother to get their facts straight...not to mention knowing the difference between static and dynamic environments.

Yes, THANK YOU, great post. I like Jake and he was a good Cyclone, but one of the top 15 players in our history? Yikes, "not even close" is right...

And Knownothing, for the record, we're not last in the Big 12, we're 11th.

Wow, this thread didn't go the direction I expected. I'm not even posting MY opinion here. This information is from articles written about the kids and their teams. Granted, in most instances local press are writing about these recruits but I have yet to see a bad article about our 2008 recruits.

One comment about Gmac: A lot of people say he is a second year coach. True, he is. But how can you actually say he has had two years to build on. The first recruiting class was a joke and last minute scramble. We got very, very lucky by getting Wesley out of that class. This year is his first REAL class and we got two great freshmen seasons out of Brackins and Garrett. Please give coach more than one REAL year of recruiting. Some of you people really need to get a grip. He has had one class where he didn't have to take leftovers and a small minority already have thrown him under the bus. Wow.

Just a reminder to keep everything civil, guys.

> I like all of our recruits except Mann. To me he is another CJ. Hamilton is a project. He will more than likely redshirt next year <

Not according to Mac, unless he's deceiving us.

Mac has discussed Mann several times on his call-in radio show, one time comparing him directly to CJ in response to a question. Mann, said Mac, is quicker and more athletic than CJ, has a superior perimeter game (shooting and defense) to CJ.

But, Mac said, the chief asset Mann will bring to the team is mental toughness. Mac said there are great kids on ISU's roster but the team's mental game isn't where it needs to be, and Mann is expected to help out in this way a lot. Said Mac.

Could be Mann and Hamilton are two years away from helping much, or maybe one or both will chip in important minutes next season. IMHO, we can't accurately forecast in the winter of 2008 what will develop nine months from now.

1 - Point guard -- Can play here fail to be better next year, considering DG and Petey are now experienced Div. IA players in Mac's system? Mac has labeled DG a combo guard, and he's said DB is a pure point guard.

It might not happen, but until it doesn't, I'm expecting DB to get his feet wet next season and seriously develop. And, he's supposed to be a terrific defensive player, which could up his PT a lot.

2 - Shooting guard -- Big Lucca and Ike, Mac has said without qualification that the team's outside shooting will improve dramatically with these two in the mix. He was unreserved about that point when I heard him make it.

Lucca is the team's best passer, Ike is a better ball-handler than Lucca, Mac said. With Lucca's shooting and passing game, I'm gonna believe he'll have a major impact in loosening up our interior game, helping our posts, and Craig and Wes J be better at what they do.

And Lucca is big, he ain't going to get pushed around willy-nilly. Wes must get bigger and stronger, sure, but he's reported to have a point guard-like handle and is terrific at penetrating and dishing . . . we'll see if he can earn PT time or not next season.

3 - Forwards -- Wes J, we all can't wait to see him healthy again and regain his proficiency. And Craig, I won't believe that this season was not a tremendous learning experience for him and that he can step up his game because of it. Even 10 more pounds on Craig's frame will help him during his sophomore season.

Could be Mann, with his perimeter abilities, will get more PT as a backup than many of us think?

4 - Posts -- Mac has said AT is the team's best post defender. That's important. Especially if part of his task is to bring along Hamilton and whomever the coaches sign in April.

It's not a Final Four team we'll put on the floor next season, but at least it will be veteran at all spots on the floor, unlike this season. And, unlike this season, the newcomers won't be forced into swim-or-sink situations but can be allowed to come along as their development warrants.

Unless and until it fails to materialize, I believe that ISU's offense will get a major boost from a much-improved outside shooting capability. After a year in Mac's system and a summer playing against tough competition in Europe, I'm gonna expect that Lucca will be ready to fire out of the chute in November.

Thanks for that post. Its nice to see real FACTS here.

Well of course Mac said that. He is going to defend his recruits. Wasn't CJ a top 150 recruit?

I have talked to people who have seen Mann play. Their comments on him was that he plays great defense but can't shoot well. Also doesn't dribble or pass very well either

I don't know if this is true, but an NU fan I know was watching Lucca shoot around in Lincoln, and said he made 94/100 shots! He also said at one point he made 64 in a row! That is absolutely crazy shooting, and if Lucca can do half of that it would be awesome.

At least one other person here agrees with you on this.

So discombobulated was the program before and shortly after Mac took it over that he was forced into survival mode, not program-building mode. He had to assemble a roster in April from whatever sources he could use. Lots of problems resulted from that forced situation.

I give Mac a complete, total pass on his first season in Ames. In my thinking, this is Mac's first year at ISU, and that's the way I'm gonna look at it. It's been said that at the college level, it's a guard-dominated game. The guard court, because of Mac's startup problems in April 2006, is our greatest problem area this season. It looks to be an improved area next fall.

Next season: Year 2 of the McDermott era at ISU, as far as this one fan is concerned.
