I made a comment in the Ohio thread that the 2003 team would beat this team. It was heat of the moment, and obviously several people dumbed the post.

I stand corrected now that we have changed the offensive game plan from the Ohio and Iowa games.

But tonight's game reminded me of the OU game in 2003 (56 - 7, our only score being a JaMaine Billups Pick 6 on OU's backup).

Yes, the 2003 team was historically bad, but I think back on that year, and I still wonder how a HEALTHY 2003 team would fare.

Tyson Smith went down with a broken leg, Jordan Carstens went down for the year (broken arm I think?), Bob Montgomery was out for the year, and Hiwatha Rutland was out for the year a few games into the season, hell, even Yelk went down so we were without our starting punter. Stevie Hicks replaced Rutland, but Michael Wagner seemed to shoulder most of the running duties.

Hell, with the exception of Zach Butler at Center, our entire starting offense from 2002 was back, minus Seneca (correct me on the O-Line though). I don't recall much from the defense though other than Tyson, Billups, and Carstens returning (please remind me).

Keep Flynn as the starter all year (I am a bit biased with that one), and don't switch between Flynn, Cris Love, and Waye Terry every other game (it was after the OU game that began), and if the entire team was healthy for the year, how would that team have fared? 4 wins? 5 wins? We only won two games that year. UNI and Ohio.

How would an entirely healthy 2003 offense fare against the defense we saw tonight?

Am I the only one seeing a lot of parallels between 2003 and 2023? Losing starters (injuries/gambling), freshman QB, coaching tenure (Mac 9th year, Campbell 8th year), etc.

Apathy has set in my friend. Not sure too many of the Cyclone faithful are interested in a ‘what if’ scenario based on a team from 20 years ago after today’s pounding in Norman.

2003 team was really bad. Really bad. 2023 team is young and gave a helluva effort and has potential. We got beat by a very good OU team at Oklahoma. Not surprising. Our series record is 7-80-2 against them. Campbell own 2 of those wins. Stupid thread.

Username checks out

This team also has a ton of injuries and suspensions. I think 2003 is best left forgotten.

That 2003 team wasn’t competitive at all in Big 12 play. That years Ohio team was a MAC bottom feeder. This years team isn’t very good and would pound that team in my opinion. To me the most telling stat of that 2003 season was the fewest pts allowed was 28. The most points scored was 21. Match the best offensive and defensive output in the same game they still go 0-fer. Lost every game by 21 plus.

There is a parallel though in a bad year following some good years (last year aside). In some ways 2004 was so awesome because of how hopeless 2003 seemed. Let’s hope we see another bounce back.

I'll add that the '04 team started out something like 0-3 in the B12, and looked like we were destined for another crappy year. Then they rattled off 4(?) in a row to make a bowl game.

I agree. 2004 felt like the greatest season ever (WE BEAT NEBRASKA!!!) after what happened in 2003.
