2-20 Bracketology

My wet dream...
3-1 to finish the regular season, 2-1 in tournament while beating KSU and KU in KC, and losing to Missou in the final seconds.

24-10 record and a 6 seed in the NCAA tourney (play in Albuqueque) and we make it to the second weekend.

boy i was there with ya until losing in the Big 12 title game in the final seconds??? Why not just win it!

Isu will not be an 8/9 seed......of they will go up to a 5-6 seed of they win a few more, or if we lose they will drop to a 10-12 seed.

Everyone is afraid of great bigs, I am afraid of teams with exceptional guards. They are the ones that kill us defensively and wear our guards out and the shots don't fall.

Something overlooked through most of this thread: I'd take St. Louis in an 8/9. Confident about winning that one.

(Have to win the first game to advance, you see.)

I think I'd rather go up against Vanderbilt in the 1st round, as the SBNation.com predicts than go up against St. Louis.

Vanderbilt is traditionally soft defensively, so I think that would be a good match-up for our shooters. Vandy has also underacheived in tournament play recently (lost as a #5 seed last season to Richmond, and in 2010 as a #4 seed to Murray State), so they could have that in the back of their minds as well.

On the other hand, Majerus is a great coach who has overachieved in the tournament IMO; Utah making it all the way to the title game in 1998.

I don't like a matchup with Kentucky much either...but wonder how did Indiana beat UK after watching Iowa thrash the Hoosiers yesterday. I guess on any given night, at home...but Indiana did not look like it should be a ranked team.

It's just fun to know that we are finally on our way to being back in the dance...

Being the 7 or the 10 and then playing UNC would be interesting...Harrison Barnes...Ames, Ia... Although I think taking an 11 seed would be great...or a longshot 6 seed

So admittedly, I don't know anything, but I smell a first round matchup with Creighton. The committee really likes to create interest this way?
GO CYCLONES!!!

As enticing as it may seem, that is a myth.

Similar interesting matchups have happened in the tournament pairings over the years, but committee Q&A always denies any motivation to do that. And considering how many bracketing procedures come into play, it'd be almost impossible to do it on purpose without breaking those rules.

Of course, when it does happen, sports media loves the storylines.

Heck, think of how many realistically potential storylines we could see this season involving ISU, either in first-round matchup or potential second round if teams advance:

* 8-9/7-10 ISU vs. So Miss. LE

* 8-9/7-10 ISU vs. Creighton. McD

* 1-8/9 or 2-7/10 ISU vs. UNC. Harrison Barnes

* 1-8/9 or 2-7/10 ISU vs. Michigan State. Chris Allen

Less likely:
* 6 ISU vs 14 Middle Tennessee. LaRon Dendy.

* ISU vs. Minnesota. Royce White. I don't see a bracketing possibility where this could happen prior to Sweet 16.

I would enjoy any of these as long as ISU won the game.

Not sure if you meant 6 v 11 wrt Middle Tenn... if we're dreaming about a 6, then wouldn't Minn be a possibility there (as a #11) as well?

True, Minnesota could be at 11. I was assuming Gophers were in play-in round territory right now (which could still be on the 11 line).

I have MTSU at 14 seed, but I haven't formalized bracket projections at this point.

I am just hoping for a 1st round bye so we don't have to play in Dayton before going to the second round game.

Give me Iowa St vs Mich St in round 2. How bittersweet would it be to be a huge underdog against a team we've been trying to avenge for over a decade. If we lose- oh well we were supposed to. Chris Allen would be licking his chops for sure...

Allen plays better when he's relaxed. This match up means you probably just watch him jack up 8-10 contested 3's and score 3 points and have 6-8 turnovers. And going against Izzo in the tournament? No thanks.

Beyond just having to play UK would be playing them in Kentucky (Louisville) with 90% of the fans being UK fans would make it a home game for them. That would be suicide for our team.

I like our chances against Syracuse. I think we could shoot around that zone with Royce at the high post. Then again, I thought that against Baylor too...

On paper we look like a great matchup against anybody's zone defense, in reality without a true PG we are just too sloppy and careless with the ball to consistently beat good zone teams. I'm not nearly as afraid to play Syracuse as I am Kentucky, Kentucky's bigs are pure bullys, they basically have an NBA frontcourt.
