1st Down Production

The o-line has been and continues to be a problem. I mean, overall since campbell started they've improved from "really horrific and I feel bad for the QB and RB" to "meh", so there's that.

This is the issue. I think people go bananas about the offense because at times it is fantastic, and at times it is a train wreck. Why can't we be fantastic EVERY play??

Well, it's because the o-line gets blown up half the time, and the play gets blown up and thus train wreck.

There's times when Manning overthinks it too, gets too cute, but that's a smaller percentage of the problem, and I think every coordinator does that some times. He is human, as it turns out. I do think he is better at strategically creating and assembling the offense, compared to tactical play calling. The "players, formations, plays" thing isn't just a line of BS for this staff.

I think Campbell and manning are elite when it comes to putting together a scheme based on the talent at hand. They are not rigid at all there. Specific play calls and game plans, I’d have more of an issue with, but they are really good at designing an offense based on who they have and what their strengths are.

I'm amazed at how many times one of our o-lineman completely whiffs on a block or gets blown up badly. In the big 12 championship game, Newell was getting beat so bad that Brock was almost sacked as soon as he received the shotgun snap.

Maybe some of this is missed assignments but how many times did David Montgomery have to juke a guy right after he got the handoff.

Manning and Campbell need to change their strategy to beat Iowa. Our 2 and 3 TE power sets have been effective against Big 12 opponents but not Iowa. The Hawks are a very physical team in the front 7 every year and they play a conservative scheme that stays in position. We’re not going to outmuscle them. So you have to beat them by putting more speed on the field and spreading them out. I’d like to see more 3, 4 and 5 WR sets and make their LBs chase in coverage. It also helps vs Iowa to have a mobile QB who can throw to all parts of the field. Dekkers is our best combo of mobility and arm strength since probably Seneca.
It's not an Iowa problem - it's a Sept. problem. For whatever reason this team is not good at all Sept. under Campbell. Look at the UNI games, Louisiana, and Campbell's also 1-5 in Big 12 openers.

There's something in their preseason work and their rotations early in the year. Some of that could be how much live stuff they do in camp, how much fundamental vs. specific work they do, and some could be taking longer to figure out the depth chart.

If you want a great appreciation of DM, watch that TCU game from the behind the LOS view. Between the OL and for some reason running a bunch of "read option" with Kempt, which just equated to nothing more than a really slow handoff, it's a miracle Montgomery did what he did.

I'd say it's both. Slow starts in early season.

Honestly, I fear we will never beat Iowa (or very rarely) because of current strategy. It seems CMC has a strategy of "we play THIS kind of offense, we don't change it for 1 game" - While I have some appreciation for that in later season results (consistency idea), it will lead to us always trying to line up and "out-Iowa" Iowa. We won't go 5-wide spread all game long just for 1 game. (Even if that would lead to a much higher % change of winning)

Newell got destroyed every time we played OU. It's amazing that we kept those games close and even won a few of them when we couldn't keep the interior DL out of the backfield. Hopefully, the move of Downing fixes some of that.
