12/19/2008 Official Coaching Search Thread

The problems in Iowa City we rail on Iowa fans about are childs play compared to CU football. That's all I'm saying. Barnett was their leader during a lot of that, and I don't want him to be the leader of our student athletes.

And that's a perfectly reasonable position, in my opinion. I've written several times that my very favorite thing about Pinkel is his devotion to running a clean program. Seriously, wins are great and I'm happy to get them, but Pinkel runs a program of which this alum can be proud. This view is exacerbated by the folly that was Quin Snyder - that was much more shameful than a 2-10 football season.

1. The dude has an impressive resume. -nobody can argue that.
2. He was able to win at Northwestern. hmm... similar situation to Iowa State, even worse as far as facilities and fan support go.
3. This job would not be a stepping stone, but more redemption to end his career and clear his name.
4. A few blights yes, but who exactly is sooooo perfect that everyone will agree he is our savior???

He took Northwestern to the Rose bowl.

let me repeat that.

He took Northwestern to the Rose bowl.

(and that was in the height of the glory days for the Big 10)

All of his issues and problems seem to have occured at Colorado. I'm not saying he didn't do anything wrong but the atmosphere and lifestyle out there certainly makes it easier for things like that to happen.

All I'm saying is, let's not kill an opportunity and automatically close the door on a guy with his resume. I would support him as a coach, if that were the case, and I hope that you all would too.

what does that mean?

The quote from Barnett about Hnida was taken completely out of context. Even Betsy Hoffman publically acknowledged it after she "mistakenly" suspended him for a few months. She went on radio and said Barnett NEVER said Hnida deserved to be raped. He was responding to a question about why Hnida wasn't accepted on the team. People need to look at the actual facts.

Man, some around here need to get their facts straight about Barnett.

He never had sex parties for recruits. Players took them to off-campus parties on recruiting trips sponsored by other students. You think that never happens anywhere else? It was NEVER condoned by Barnett.

NO ONE was EVER arrested for rape charges!..and believe me if there was ever a shred of evidence there were rapes, the Boulder DA would have charged them.

The under charging for meals things was an AD mistake, not a football coaches mistake. The AD is the one who ran the training table and handled it, not Barnett.

Get the facts straight, please.
There exists a real question as to whether Hnida was ever even raped. She refused to report it the police, refused to identify her supposed attacker. When Barnett made his comments about her, he was referring to why she wasn't accepted on the team. If you watch the whole press conference, he expressed ALOT of regret about what happened to her.

Barnett would be an absolute steal. He's by far the most qualified candidate out there, except maybe Fulmer. 3 BCS caliber conference championships, 4 north titles. All the "baggage" has no basis. He was the scapegoat at Colorado for allegation concocted by the anti-athletics agenda in Boulder. If there was anything to the allegations against him, he would have been fired without coaching another 2 years. No coach would do more with ISU than him.

You are absolutely correct. He'll win here. People need to actually do some looking at the stuff from CU. There was nothing ever to it, after years of investigation, absolutely nothing....

He's referring to some rogue NW players that did some betting while Barnett was at NW. The NCAA looked into it and cleared Barnett of having anything to do with it. No charges, no violations, nothing. There is so much misinformation out there about Barnett its ridiculous. If you think Parker hasn't looked into all this stuff for ISU, you're crazy.

Barnett's comments about Hnida were taken completely out of context. He was responding to a question about why she wasn't accepted on the team. He was NOT saying she deserved to be raped because she was a bad kicker. Even Betsy Hoffman went on radio and publically said this.

You forgot Barnett's number one quality - he's a Mizzou alum!

Honestly, I think he'd be a great hire for the Cyclones. A home run of a hire. However, I can understand the trepidation associated with hiring a man who lost his last job because of a lack of institutional control.

Surprised Marty (62andeven) hasn't came up with another rumor yet today.

Thank you.

It seems like there is so much negativity regarding this guy without even thinking through things to give him a chance.

Saying that all the negativity and poor judgement will follow him here to Iowa State takes into account that he learned nothing from his mistakes at Colorado.

Would I prefer Turner Gill, Graham, a few others, yes, but would I be excited for what Barnett brings to the table as well, Hell yes.

Yes, it would be taking a chance.....but I think we all need to remember something. We're ISU, not exactly a hot spot right now, any coach is going to have to take a chance on us as well.

(this is funny bc it's all speculation at this point anyway)

I think some of the mess at Colorado could have been traced back to tricky Ricky. But I'm also curious - is there a team that has won the BCS title that has had zero off the field issues? Just curious. Unfortunately, it seems like the squeaky clean programs never quite make it to the top (see Mizzou, of course their play against the south juggernauts was the real issue... :jimlad:) Just my perspective, not condoning or asking for trouble (one of the things I think GC actually did well - kept the guys out of trouble.)

There has also been a lot of talk about coaches in bowl games. I can completely understand if the target is a HC, but an assistant? Generally those guys are jumping ship to take the HC spot, pending bowl game or not. If you need examples on that, welcome to college football...

Did i spend my $0.02 for the day?

Wow Barnett would be an interesting hire. On one hand, he is everything you want in a coach at a place like ISU - proven winner, experienced head coach, has demonstrated ability to win at lower-tier BCS schools. On the other, many ISU fans would worry about his track record in dealing with his athletes. I'm sure Pollard is aware of that and takes it all into consideration.

I feel like Barnett would be a slam dunk.

Welcome to the board Mr. Barnett. If you are indeed the coach at ISU next season, I will give you 100% of my support and I promise not to crack any stripper jokes.
