I actually think that Iowa defense was very, very good but when you're on the field for 40 minutes and the other team constantly gets the ball in plus territory because of turnovers and general ineptitude you're not going to hold up.

Tennessee had the pick 6 and a 2 yard drive for a touchdown. Giving up 383 yards an 21 points shouldn't feel like a blowout but because the offense is so abysmal it does. Michigan's two TDs were on a 5 yard drive and a 6 yard drive. Two of Penn State's scores were on a 39 yard drive and a 19 yard drive.

I have no idea why Phil Parker has the loyalty he does. He could go somewhere else, make the same or better money and get to play in the playoff consistently.

Anyone else think that Iowa's OC position might playout longer than Kirk is saying? Considering Iowa has a search for a new AD, even though current temp Goetz seems to be the person for the job. Would the new AD keep Kirk around? Going to be fun to see how this all plays out.

I've said it before here, but god it's so disappointing that ISU continues to find ways to lose to those puds.

It is one of the more disappointing things - if not THE most disappointing thing about our entire athletic department - Iowa (correctly) understands how critical that game is every year, in this state. They bring it! They play focused and disciplined every year. Because they KNOW that they HAVE to win. I would give anything for us to have that same focus and mentality for what truly is a very, very important game on our schedule. I sincerely wish we treated it like our Super Bowl (like Iowa correctly does).

It's crazy cause on one hand it is a horrendous job by the coaches putting together that offense but then on the other hand it is a great job by the staff to coach up the defense and Sts and find a way to win 10 games with the worst offense in modern college football history.

That goes both ways, though. Despite the short fields (and the pick 6) vs. PSU and Tenn they still gave up nearly 400 yards of offense. And in each of the PSU, Michigan and Tennessee games they were essentially over in the 3rd quarter, as Iowa was down by 3-4 scores in each by then. Iowa is taking the air out of the ball and bleeding clock to minimize possessions for 60 minutes of every game. In these three games the opposition was doing the same by the 3rd quarter.

It's a very good defense, but it is playing in a historically bad division, and their schedule is historically bad offensively. ISU was terrible on offense at that point in the season. All of the Big 10 west were toward the bottom of offenses in college football. Their cross-over games included Rutgers (good defense, terrible offense) and Michigan State, which was a complete trainwreck, especially on offense.

A historically bad schedule in terms of offenses + Iowa's offense bleeding clock and minimizing possessions + good teams being up by three scores against a completely inept Iowa offense and bleeding the second half clock = a good, but highly overrated defense.

If Iowa was remotely capable of putting up points vs. Michigan, Penn State or Tennessee, those defensive performances would've looked very different. When you are 35 minutes into a game and both teams are content to bleed the play clock, run it and punt, then your defense is probably going to look OK.

Will they? They have MN, NE, and WI locked in as rivals. There are 2 easy and one likely win right there. Throw in 2-3 non cons and you have a winning record before you look at the Indy, Purdue, NW, Illinois,Rutgers, and so ons that they will get a couple of.

Honestly the way things are trending with recruiting and new coaches I would take Wisconsin and Nebraska over them the next 5 years.

If I'm him, I change nothing and if they fire me I get a huge settlement. To retire is to bail UI out of a contract. But he might prefer to be remembered as the 10 win West division guy, and not take the reputational hit that will come with the new scheduling.

I was firmly on the this is Kirk's last hoorah wagon but I think he pulls a Hayden and stays a couple more years and really runs the program into the ground.

Tennessee showed once again that the Iowa D can look very average when you spread them out and play with tempo. Adjusted efficiency metrics show their defense was very very good. Especially with DeJean in there. And they didn't force as many TOs as they usually do this year. I know you can't say anything about Iowa is good but it is crazy that they won that many games with maybe the worst power conference offense in the last twenty years or so.

Disagree. If you are great at playing smash mouth like some of the Wisconsin teams you can also beat Iowa's defense. It really comes down to how good your offense is not the style. Iowa has beaten plenty of teams that use spread offenses. I

The Tennessee game just again showed there is only so much a defense can do against a good offense before the damn breaks if you have the worst offense in the country. Tennessee only scored on 2 of 8 possessions in the first half. Any team with an average offense would have at least been tied heading into halftime. Then Tenn had three straight series ending in punts to start the second half so 2 of 11 possessions. Then what happens. TO= TD, TO - TD. 28-0 Game over.

“Winning ten games” when you play in the Big Ten West is not like winning 10 games any where else so it’s hard to compare.
