1 free throw = 2 or 3 points?

Maybe it's a money grab for when the fine for flopping......

That seems like a good deal if you are only a mediocre 3-point shooter...see if you can't get a defender in the air and get a 3 point free throw out of the deal.

On the other hand, seems like it would encourage more contact on 2 pointers, I don't have any stats, but it seems like the first free throw is missed more often than the second one. So you might not be as worried about fouling inside the arc.

Wonder where the league sees a deficiency and why they want to do this.

They want to use a rule that every high school spring league uses to save time? Dumb.

How would they do 1&1's?

They don’t do 1&1s in the NBA or G League.

like @Showtimeljs said, the first free throw % is lower than the 2nd so it helps the fouling team on twos. I suspect it would help the fouling team on both. I don’t know what the reasoning would be behind it.

To me this encourages more fouling at the end of close games

Agree.

For reference, an 80% shooter
2 shots
64% chance of 2 points
32% chance of 1 point
4% chance of 0 points

Now, there'd be a 20% chance of 0 points.

Still the same expected points in this case.

(0.64 x 2pts) + (0.32 x 1pt) + (0.04 x 0pts) = 1.6pts

(0.80 x 2pts) + (0.20 x 0pts) = 1.6pts

Not sure if it works that way for other FT%s.

I feel like this saves time since literally everything in the NBA is a foul now.

Sure. But if you're down 3 with a few seconds left, you need them to come away with 0 points. The chances of that happening are now higher.

IM not like a basketball purist or anything. However, it seems like they keep coming up with new rules just to make new rules. This is ok but whats the point. Just let them shoot free throws like they always have. Free throws add a lot to the end of the game fun. I mean I have never heard anyone say they wished we didn't have to wait so long to see that second free throw of the two shot foul.

The article says end of game situations and overtime free throws wont change. This rule would only apply up to the last few minutes of regulation.

Missed that. Still seems stupid.

If it's meant to speed up the game, how about instead just don't let the guys leave their spots on the lane between shots. Once you set on the lane, you stay there. The constant jockeying for placement is what takes the most time.
