New rankings for the week. Only two small changes for Iowa State wrestlers. Simmons moves from #16 to #15 at 125 after Barlow McGhee of Missouri takes a 4-6 loss to unranked Christian Moody of Oklahoma and drops from #14 to #17. And at 174 Lelund Weatherspoon moves from #10 to #9 after last week's #8, Casey Kent from Penn, took a 4-7 loss to #16 Jon Schliefer from Princeton and drops out of the top ten.

And in a rarity for this far in to the season, not a single #1 wrestler has lost a match. Each preseason #1 is still #1.

So here's a fun game, which #1 will lose first? Or since I don't know all their schedules, which #1 will not end up there. Right now they all look pretty head and shoulders above the competition.

I'd say Jordan at 174 might be the least dominant, but at the same time that weight is probably the weakest. Alternatively, Dean at 184 is an all-time great, but I could see Nickel, Dudley or Downey pulling off the upset. I'll go with Clark at 133 since he has been battling injuries and sometimes keeps matches closer than they need be.

Probably not a bad bet since he gets Kaid Brock this weekend and Brock's only loss in college is when he hurt his knee and injury defaulted out of a match last year.

True. That's a tough set of back to back matches.

  • Gilman I see going in to NCAAs undefeated short of a big upset.
  • Clark has multiple tough matches and is coming back from an injury so likely will drop 1 or 2.
  • Heil doesn't have a super tough schedule but wrestles a lot of close matches so could always drop one to Meredith in the dual or at Big XIIs.
  • Retherford has Sorenson and Jordan on the schedule but he is undefeated against Sorenson. Getting through Big Tens without a loss might be tough though since he'd have to go through them twice.
  • Nolf has Kemerer left but has already handled Berger without much trouble so has a good shot at going undefeated in to NCAAs.
  • Martinez has Massa but other than that a pretty clear path, though Big Tens will be brutal once he hits the semis and getting out of that undefeated will be tough.
  • Bo Jordan doesn't have anybody scary left on the schedule and the Big Ten is weak at 174 so he has a good shot at going in to NCAAs undefeated
  • Gabe Dean, J'Den Cox, and Kyle Snyder will all almost surely go in to NCAAs undefeated

So yeah, I'd guess Clark being the first #1 guy to lose. And not because he's an Iowa wrestler, he's just got some tough matches coming up and is just getting back from an injury.

Mostly agree, except I'd add Retherford to the list of "untouchables".

Being a Hawk fan, I do agree that Clark is the most likely to fall first. His first 2 matches back were less than impressive, but I'm hoping he was just coasting after getting leads to not risk further injury.
 
Clark turned out to be a good guess. He lost 6-7 to Kaid Brock today. Sorenson and Stoll both also got upset and Iowa lost either 24-11 or 24-10 to Oklahoma State.

24-10 as far as I'm aware some unsportsmanlike things going on from the Iowa 125 after the dual during hand shakes
