2022 NCAA Baseball Tournament

Wow - Rutgers didn't get in. Great season, as they were runner-up in the Big Ten regular season and tournament; maybe the top offense, stats-wise, in Div I.
The committee really just thinks the Big Ten sucks in baseball.

Ugh! ESPN+ to watch my favorite month of college baseball. Guess I'll be signing back up again. Thought I was done after college basketball.

Tennessee got the lower rated teams in their sub regional that they deserved being the #1 national seed.

Big ten is just really weak in baseball, just not on the sane level as the southern teams. Impossible to be given the weather advantage.
To start the season later, Arizona and other southern schools playing in hot weather has to be dealt with.

Or there could be 2 Division 1 subdivisions- northern and southern- with different seasons and championships.

Or the season could be split up into the fall and spring so that games wouldn't have to be played in February and March.

Isn't baseball played outdoors in Southern states during June, July & August at the MLB & Minor League level??

Arizona & Houston may be the only professional exceptions that play in domes. But is that as much for fan comfort vs player danger issues.

Would love for college baseball to be a mid-Apr to mid-July sport.

Good points! However, i watched Arizona's home regional game last year in early June and the temp was 106 or something and they had to water the dirt to keep it from getting too hard. It seemed like playing there into July would be less desirable than playing into June.

I'd like to hear what coaches there and in the south would say about having a later season. In the interest of winning more they would prefer playing earlier. In the interest of making the sport more national, I wonder if they would be willing to compromise at least a little bit.

It would be interesting if college baseball coaches were polled and given the option to play either:
  1. The current Feb 15ish to May 31 regular and conference championship season or
  2. An April 15 to July 31 regular & conference championship season.
I hung out with a D1 baseball coach about 20 years ago and he definitely felt southern schools had an advantage to the longer season because they could award more scholarship $ to position players vs pitchers. While northern schools typically had to give more money to pitchers because they needed more on the roster due to trying to fit most of the season in after March 15.

Also northern teams had pretty brutal travel during Feb 15 to early April just to get some competition in before Conference season started.

Yes, that would be interesting, but I think it would be good to have an option(s) in between those options, too.

There is a Tropical Storm supposedly heading for Miami so there is talk that Regional might not even be able to start until like Sunday.

Day 1 (Friday) summary

#1 seeds (host teams) went 14-0 (2 games PPD)
#2 seeds went 7-8 (1 game PPD)

#3 over #2:
Campbell 15, Georgia Tech 8
UL-Lafayette 7, TCU 6
Michigan 8, Oregon 6
Columbia 8, Gonzaga 2
UConn 8, Wake Forest 7
VCU 8, Georgia 1
Florida State 5, UCLA 3
San Diego 3, Vanderbilt 2

UCLA and UC Santa Barbara losses were very lame- hoping they can win their way thru the loser's bracket.
