*** Official #6 IOWA STATE vs #2 Houston Game(Day) Thread ***

Going on the road and outreboubding Houston shows a lot of grit.

There were some pretty questionable calls, particularly in the first half, but I don’t think it was anything particularly egregious.. sometimes calls don’t go your way.

We missed too many shots. Houston has a great defense, but we missed a lot of open shots.

What WAS impressive is that we weren’t physically outmatched by arguably the most physical team in the country. Round three in the Big 12 tournament on a more neutral floor (albeit KC is basically Hilton at this point….) will be awesome to watch, if it happens.

Two of the best teams in the country had a slugfest, and the home team came out on top.
agreed with this. even with the suffocating start, we had opportunities to close the gap between missed FT's & layups.

Gilbert has been almost 50% from 3 the past 9 games and CuJo 40%. Will that open things up for Milan to find his 3 pt shot back? Also, Tre's 3s do not look flukey at all. Such a huge lift when he hits those.
This team, with this defense, shoots like that... watch out everybody else.

Gilbert seems to almost shoot the 3 better when defended and pressured or in a moment where he's forced to shoot it. With Tre it's when he's wide open that it seems like a great shot to take. Tre's 3s last night looked really pure...also just need more 3 point shooters named Tre.

For it being an 'ugly' game, there was a lot of offense in the 2nd half. Houston had 45, ISU had 42
That second half was as high-level a half of basketball as there has been in college hoops this year. Elite defense and some incredible shot-making despite that elite defense.

You watch basically any Big 10 game and the contrast in pace, space offense gets to operate with and speed of the players is just shocking. They don't look like the same level of basketball.

The threes that King, Gilbert and Sharp hit were absolutely impressive.

After sleeping on it, that was one of my favorite games to watch under TJ’s regime. Outside of the first 10 minutes that was about as high level basketball (especially the 2nd half) as you will see all year long through the entire country.

You could tell by how the coaches and players interacted after the game. A lot of respect was given to each other. We have ourselves a legitimate top 10 team that can go far.

I mean I think it's fair to argue that there were multiple missed fouls in the first half that should have put us on the FT line when we were struggling to score. Those matter too.
True, but we also struggled at the ft line. Probably would have to shoot 10 to get 5 points.

We played far from a perfect game. A lot of that had to do with how good our opponent was. Outcome aside, it's hard to not be really impressed with this team. We went toe to to with the #2 team on the road and didn't back down. This team had every opportunity to quit last night and instead they kept fighting. This team has completely bought into what their identity is, and it shows. This kind of thing doesn't happen every year, so I'm enjoying every minute of it.

Playing a game like that and losing is far better than playing a game against mediocre opponent and winning. What an absolute dog fight. We didn't back down at all and we played with some of the best toughness I've seen us play with all year long. Our guys deserve this long break until Saturday and it'll be great for them. Then put away WVU early and get some of these guys rest again.

I'll preface this by saying Keshon Gilbert is my favorite player outside of Tamin.. There was a stretch there were we had numerous possessions to make this game extremely uncomfortable for them and Keshon missed 3 FTs, including the front end of a 1 and 1, and he also turned the ball over I think on consecutive possessions. I'm in no way blaming him for the loss, and the FTs were actually more important than the turnovers. He still ended up hitting two big threes later on but that little stretch of time could've cut the game to 2-3 points and maybe us taking a lead had we not turned it over.

Either way, incredible effort by our guys. The crazy thing is that we didn't play well on the road against arguably the best team in the nation and we still had a chance late in the game. That rarely ever happens and is a testament to our defense and toughness. Someone mentioned this a few pages back but look no further than Marquette @ UCONN this past Saturday where Marquette doesn't play well and UCONN beats em by almost 30.
It’s fine to play that game assuming nobody got hurt, and I’m not sure tamin came out of that well. Everyone saying we lost nothing, but I’m a little worried tamin is a lot more banged up now.

A buddy of mine who is a pretty big Iowa fan texted me during the game about how it doesn't even look like the same sport when Iowa plays (he meant it as a compliment...).

The biggest thing to me when you watch other teams play is how freely they are allowed to pass and catch. You can move the ball around the perimeter with zero resistance, which just doesn't make sense. When you play us as well as Houston, just catching a pass becomes a chore.

Houston reminds me of the Huggins coached WV teams where they mug you with no foul called. Constantly got their hands on you and pushing you. It took us out of any offensive flow we tried to get into. But credit to our guys for fighting through that and not let it get in their heads and get blown out of the game.

I think that game banged Tamin up but I don't think he's injured.

Houston last night looked to me like what the Press Virginia teams always wanted to be but were not skilled enough to be.

Too many missed cripples. Couldn't buy a 3-ball in the first half. If just two or three of those outcomes were positive, completely different ballgame. TJ's suffocating defense kept them in the game, and the guys never seemed to lose their poise. Overall, a positive defeat, if there is such a thing. I doubt ISU drops more than a couple spots in the polls, assuming they take care of business at home this weekend.
