*** Official #6 IOWA STATE vs #2 Houston Game(Day) Thread ***

Going on the road and outreboubding Houston shows a lot of grit.

There were some pretty questionable calls, particularly in the first half, but I don’t think it was anything particularly egregious.. sometimes calls don’t go your way.

We missed too many shots. Houston has a great defense, but we missed a lot of open shots.

What WAS impressive is that we weren’t physically outmatched by arguably the most physical team in the country. Round three in the Big 12 tournament on a more neutral floor (albeit KC is basically Hilton at this point….) will be awesome to watch, if it happens.

Two of the best teams in the country had a slugfest, and the home team came out on top.

Cuz they do that to each other in practice. LEs team became tough because of how they practiced. Suspect TJ's guys experience the same
I laugh when I hear some teams say when they play us they're going to be physical. To really do what teams like us and Houston do you gotta have complete commitment in the program which involves how you train, practice, scheme, culture, and the type of players you recruit.

You don't just wake up on game day and decide you are going to be tougher for 40 mins and expect the same result.

I think this argument is a bit overblown to be honest. People love to use this towards the end of the year to try and spark a conversation but I don't think it's as prevalent as they make it out to be. Do teams like Houston and Iowa State foul a lot? Sure. Do they still play insane defense? Yes. These officials that referee our games are not just Big 12 officials, they go everywhere.

Yea I get they go everywhere, but there are also a ton of D-1 officials who don’t do Big 12 games, and they don’t keep familiar crews together during the tourney, as the NCAA assigns those games, not the conferences.

If playing defense like this would win championships, the Big 10, who was notorious for being the most physical league for years, would have had at least one since Michigan State won in 2000.

And generally I am OK with that. The foul discrepancy was not out of the ordinary at all playing on the road (and a lot of it was last 2 minute fouls). What p!ssed me off me was that UH had a handful of borderline dirty plays that weren't called. e.g.-
  • The leaning screen on Tamin where the guy just blasted him with his shoulder and dropped him.
  • The forearm shiver from Shead to Tamin where Tamin went to the deck and Shead went in for a layup.
It seemed to me like UH made a conscious decision to go after Tamin physically. And I get it, he is critical for ISU and has been banged up. So hit him a few times and put him off his game. And it worked.

Physical is one thing. Handsy fouls in another thing. But cheap shots are on an entirely different level.
That one was nasty and probably should have been a flagrant.

That being said. I've seen games that were officiated worse. A lot of Kansas games have been worse.

I'd like to hear Tyrese Hunter's honest comparison years down the road. He went from one of the toughest programs to possibly the softest.

Again....who's crying about it? I have an opinion, and you keep responding to it. A LOT of people who watched the first half saw it. It was clear as day how uneven it was.

As for KSU, was the rest of the game called unevenly? I don't remember.
I stopped counting at your 18th post about the officiating. Get over it. Every game has missed calls and can seem one sided at times to a fan.

Glad TJ handles the officials better than you do.

Terrific effort last night.

If we want to beat these elite teams, we need more from Ward or Watson. Not a criticism, just an observation.
Ward just missed a bunch of times on blocks and other deflections. He should be fine.

With his length and speed, they could have used Watson a bit more for traps and other double-teams. This being said, his lack of ball-handling skills could have been a real hindrance on the other end. With him and one of the bigs, you are really having to rely on a limited number of ball-handlers against that pressure.

So we agree that is primary the reason they lost, not refs. Right?

And that teams like ISU and Houston get lots of home cooking, it's fact and we have to learn to accept it. Fair enough?

I mean I think it's fair to argue that there were multiple missed fouls in the first half that should have put us on the FT line when we were struggling to score. Those matter too.

Didn’t take too long to find considering you have 5 posts on each page complaining about the officiating and then tell others to stop crying.

I don't tolerate being told I didn't see things that I clearly saw. And I'm not the only one who saw them.

Not the best basketball decision but he’s got the right to play wherever he wants. Just hope he spent at least some of the money wisely.

Followed the whole thing. Start a thread about it and you can talk yourself in circles there.
