General Sickness

Not me I rarely get sick. Its either luck or the plethera of meds I take. Mostly Asthma steriods, vitamins, bp pills, mental pills. I think I take about 20 a day.
I'm in this boat. I credit a lot of it to hot yoga actually. I think I just sweat it all out.

People never used to go to the doctor near as much back in the day. They gutted out their sickness. Now it seems like people get a bad cold and go see what’s wrong. It’s probably helped diagnose real problems people have though. I got super sick about ten years ago with the flue. Went in to get an IV and found out I also had lupus and a nodule on my neck they needed to take out.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I really feel like wearing masks for 18 months had a negative impact on everyone's immune systems by not being exposed to as much stuff. Same concept as when you send your kid to daycare for the first time and all of a sudden they are exposed to everything and sick all the time.

I used to get a few colds every winter and was only sick once during the entire mask period. Since then, it seemed like I got sick every time I ran into someone with the sniffles. Only had a cold once so far this winter so I think my body is finally getting back to normal. I've also noticed that my colds tend to hang on longer than they used to.

I also think everyone is just more aware of their health than they were 5 years ago.

This.

What's more:

Thanks to worldwide media shlock 24/7, we know of every incidence of every illness on the planet. So, too much information...

There have been studies done which favor theories that high rates of Caesarian births and lack of breast-feeding do a number on a child's immune system. So, modern medicine...

We know the environment is more polluted than ever (think about the nitrates in Iowa's drinking water). So, environment...

Every other commercial on TV is from Big Pharma telling us to check with our doctors to see if Blablablabonix is right for us (without even saying what disease it's for)...

All medication has side effects, so if you're taking Blablablabonix for autistic entercolitis (fake disease), you may also develop Frakatakeratica Syndrome. Guess that's better than projectile vomiting and death...

It's interesting to me that the Western world has so many other health issues that people who have to fight for every crumb that goes into their mouths don't tend to have some of our more prevalent health concerns. Like, no one in a country that's starving to death seems to suffer from bulimia.

And so it goes.
You hit it on the head. Not going to get into some of the political things in this but, yes.

I’ve wondered about this myself. I don’t know if it’s just being a parents and suddenly having kids that go to school super frequently but I feel like there’s been an unusually frequent number of stomach bugs flowing through this house. My other hypothesis was water quality, but I have no way of proving this out.

Have not had even the sniffles (excepting, one, possibly two 1-2 day periods of feeling rundown by COVID) since I started taking 5000 IU vitamin D3 daily 5 years ago. But could just be coincidence.

Every sneeze is extreme......every sore throat is epic......and every cough is historic.

Even the best physicians over-prescribe, in my opinion.

For example, I was given a rescue inhaler several years ago. Haven't used the one I have for at least two years.
However, every time I go to the doc now (once a year if I don't get some other kind of boo-boo), s/he/they ask if I want a rescue inhaler.

On two different occasions, I've been prescribed muscle relaxers which did absolutely nothing for the problem I was having.

On another occasion, I was prescribed something for esophageal spasms (if you ever have one, you'll be convinced it's a heart attack, I guarantee). I asked the doc if I had to keep taking the meds. He said "If you don't want to have any more spasms..." I quit taking them. Haven't had one since.

I used to think my parents had what I called Dr. Welby Syndrome (old TV show where Robert Young ran into every bizarre disease and solved the case in under an hour, leaving time for commercials and James Brolin close-ups). They always seemed disappointed to learn that they had something more common. I guess younger folks have whatever med show is popular now...maybe they've seen "House" in reruns, so today, it might be House Syndrome, which involves rushing to the doctor because they think they have some exotic condition.

Then again, I guess everything's exotic when it happens to our own selves.

I have been less sick since taking 5000-10000 IUs of d3 and more zinc since learning that helps with COVID back in 2020, but just got a brutal cold a few weeks ago that even lingered after z pack.

Exactly. It's not just tension that is hyper.

Lots of folks are on BP meds because they won't give up soda which contains truckloads of salt (if you drink enough).

After I got covid back in 22 I swear I was constantly coming down with something every few weeks. Think it did a number on my immune system and left it weaker for 6 months or so.

There's still research being done into the long term effects of covid on the immune system I believe

I only really get jumpy with plugged ears as I was basically born with an infection and had them growing up.

I have a family member who tried to ignore an ear infection once and it got so bad it screwed up their ear drum and balance chronically.

About 3 weeks ago I had a regular cold and then my ears plugged up to where it was painful so I went in just to make sure. Was just part of whatever cold virus was going around.

After HS, when trying to become an EMT learned just exactly what viruses can do to organs. The scarring of the heart. Harry Anderson (judge on "Night Court") died from a stroke brought on by the flu. Then there are things like Scarlet Fever. The stuff can play havoc on the immune system.
