49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

Brock definitely had plenty of doubters this year, and anyone still trying to push the narrative that he is somehow a fraud, is being willfully obtuse, but at the same time, the little man syndrome that a segment of his supporters continue to display is not doing anyone any favors.
Defending Brock against ridiculous lies and standards that no other quarterback has to live up to is little man syndrome?

Yeah man. It's a sport. There's a massive amount of subjectivity built into it. The talking heads will always try to drum up controversy, because it gets clicks/ratings. Getting worked up into a lather every time some idiot calls Brock a game manager, is the definition of little man syndrome. Let it go. Brock Purdy had an incredible year. Nobody can take that from him, no matter how much they might try.

I am an ISU fan because I’m an alum. I loved Iowa State and being a student. My parents went to ISU. I got to be in the drumline during the Oklahoma State Thursday night game. I love Iowa State because of my personal ties to the college.

Unless someone is a relative of a player for a pro team, I just don’t really get being a massive die hard for a pro team in the same way I understand it for college.

I LOVE watching NFL football, because I like to see the highest level of the game being played. I also love watching certain players.. as in all pro sports, I am a fan of players more than teams. For the first time basically ever, a former ISU player was a major factor on one of the best teams in the NFL. That’s exciting.

A little bit, yeah.
Did you watch how the national media was talking about how bad Purdy was in the playoffs even though he led the team to 2 come from behind win? Purdy doubters overwhelmingly outnumbered supporters. The narrative was Purdy made things more difficult by not playing well in the playoffs despite having “incredible” talent around him.
Did you watch the games? Brock had an incredible 4th qtr vs the Packers and an incredible 2nd half vs the Lions. He didn’t play well in either first half. A little criticism is ok.

Love Brock and I love Iowa State. He showed up when it mattered and most media could see that.

But he wasn’t praised for the come back wins. He was criticized for putting his team behind. I have never seen in my life that QB who brought his team from behind gets criticism instead of praise.

100% of the media I heard talking about the playoffs said that Purdy struggled in the first half of the games, and was lights out in the 4th quarter. Which was completely accurate.

You're clearly not a Vikings fan. Kirk's had a similar relationship with members of the media, as Purdy.

Yes, Brock has doubters. So what? On the big stage, they all do. That's the way it works. Look at LeBron James. There are reporters who have made a career out of criticizing every facet of his game. Sports criticism is a cottage industry designed to get you upset. And if that's what you want to do, go for it. But just know that your righteous anger is sustenance for the very machine you are raging at.

Then change the media you are consuming. There are certain one’s who make paychecks off ticking off fans when they probably don’t actually believe what they are saying. They are very easy to identify.

Every podcast/article/tweet I consumed praised him for his comebacks and rightfully criticized his first halfs.

Like Nick WRONG. He likes to do ridiculous HOT TAKES to tick off fans. It gets ratings and people fighting with him. It's part of his game.

Stop this Minnesota Vikings junk. LOL. He's not going there. He will stay a 49ers player and our starter for a long time to come. Cousins is rehabbing the injury and I think he will come back there for the Vikings and be the starter. In no way can you say Cousins has been better in the Playoffs anyway. In 2 years Purdy goes further than he ever did in his career.

Cap wise we have a lot of guys to re sign and extend. There are tens of millions probably going to be tied up. We really don't have the cap room anyway for him. Unless you want to let multiple players go.

It's more of a media PIPE DREAM. It's for clicks. Something to talk about in the offseason. But not really serious.

More of my NFL ignorance or display:

1 - I continue to read mention that the 49ers will have to pay BP after the coming season. Is this the case, even though he'll a fourth year on his rookie contract to go?

2 - Do you have an idea how much (or little) he'll get? Will the '9ers have to jockey other contracts around, weaken themselves in other areas, or will BP not kill the cap with what he can get?

The Vikings, they'd love to have Fran Tarkenton v 2.0 ;)

It won’t happen. And as a life long former Viking fan, I pray it doesn’t because something tragic would end up happening to him because that’s just what happens in Minnesota. A lot of us probably want him up there simply to be able to watch him in person much more easily.

Dak is negotiating right now and it's expected his contract will be somewhere between $50-65mil/yr. For a QB that fails to deliver year after year after year in the playoffs. Above average QB but far from elite and ridiculously overpaid IMHO.

Brock won't get that for his first contract, and from everything I know talking to him over the years, he won't be like Dak, Lamar, etc that demand all the money and leave nothing for other pieces around them. I wouldn't be surprised if Brock starts out in the $35-40mil range for his first big contract. He's still young and in contractual terms won't get the same kind of money that Lamar and others got for their first big contracts - for a couple reasons.

The 49ers do have some positioning they need to do though as they have some key contracts coming up and some big decisions to make for when Brock is on a big boy salary. Right or wrong, it's why a lot of people say that the 49ers' best window for a SB only lasts 1-2 more years.

They will probably have to give up some stuff. When his contract comes due. But he's on the rookie deal for at least 1 more year and maybe 2. They can't even negotiate with him until the end of next year. Cap goes up each year. They will keep some and lose some guys. 49ers need to keep drafting well. To fill in some of the likely lost spots.

No way Cousins is better than Purdy anyway. If they made a move for Cousins they take a huge cap hit this year. Rather than waiting until next year or the year after. For a worse player who doesn't go as far in the playoffs. Who is also older and with injury history. I just think it overall makes no sense at all for the 49ers.

The composition of the roster is unknown in 1, 2, 3 years. Will Brock take slightly less to keep the roster more intact? Will he and his agent want a max deal? If so you lose some guys. What the cap will be is unknown too in 2 - 3 years. It increases each year. But hard to predict. So there may be more room. They will need to make some choices though. They won't be able to keep everyone.

Dak is way over paid to CHOKE every year in the Playoffs. Franchise QB's are generally hugely over paid. But what can you do about that? Just like a baseball pitcher who gets hundreds of millions. These people are getting paid more than CEO's. To play a game. Kind of doesn't make societal sense. But it's because of TV money, advertising, revenue sharing with the players. A lot of money comes in and star players get a lot of it.

I can remember the days where star players were getting $5 - $10 million a year. Then $20 million a year. It's just absurd now. $50 - $65 million. I love sports. But no way some sports guy is worth that. It's just supply and demand though. The fans demand the sport and pay the money and watch on TV. Which gets ratings and huge advertising dollars. So it is what it is. Fair or not. Probably unfair. But that's life. Some are much more lucky than others.

Yeah, I have so many angry thoughts about sports players and coaches vs teachers, police officers, firefighters, etc. - especially teachers. Even a high school can refuse to pay a teacher more than $35K a year (and not cover most supplies) while paying millions a year on football. Some of those Texas schools that pay minimum wage but build $40 million football stadiums make me sick to the core.

It's hard to disagree in some sense. I love sports. But I see the problem and the deep unfairness. In some ways societies priorities are all mixed up. But as long as they keep getting TV money and revenue from advertising and revenue sharing you will see this continue.

The fans I suppose could choose not to go and say no to it. I mostly stopped going to pro games years ago. I go to College games all over the country. Where I have some different relatives and friends. Even those tickets are more now. But certainly way less than a pro game. College ticket for a decent game is like $65 and a decent seat. Pro game is like $300 for the cheap seats and you need to 2. So like $600. Then food, drinks, parking, hotel and airfare if you had to fly. You can be $900 - $1,500 for a regular season game easily. That's just 2 people. Not even 4. College game figure $120 - $150 out the door total. That's much more fair. I go to San Diego State Aztecs and Wisconsin Badgers sometimes. I like the College game. Some other places too.

TV revenue and advertising is where the real money is. As long as they get huge money on that and revenue sharing with the players they will make outrageous money. Is it too much? Probably yes. But fans could choose not to watch. In which case ratings, advertising and revenue would go down. But so far they choose to watch. I just try to ignore it and block it out of my mind. I know it's unfair. But the Saturday and Sunday games are a nice escape from life and give us all something fun to focus on. Taking the daily struggles away.

Of course I see the deep unfairness in it though. Not much 1 individual can do about that though.

There's no debate that the sports industry makes an obscene amount of money, but we're so far past the point of having any of our objections to that fact be taken seriously. The vast majority of us, on this site anyway, are miles past the point of being able to draw a line in the sand and keep a straight face, when it comes to this topic. Million dollar players and coaches. Billion dollar owners. We start threads discussing which of the new advertisements designed to suck money out of our pockets are our favorites. We decided long ago that we're okay with this

It's a pipe dream for me to have Purdy play for the Vikings ;) I think he is an upgrade over Cousins and his age and mobility are a big reason why

Absolutely agree 100%, but doesn't make me any less sick. And I know the hypocrisy in that statement because I consume every ounce of CFB, CBB, and NFL I can fit in my mouth.
