Muscatine students get all expenses paid trip to China

I’ve been to China multiple times and never felt unsafe. Any data that backs up your claim that you are more likely to die in China than Australia or any other country for that matter?

I read that as not dying in Australia every damn animal down there can kill you.

My dad told me to take advantage of every travel opportunity while I was young. It would never be easier or cheaper.

He was (is) right on both points. I've traveled a lot since then, but it's not easier or cheaper. :)
Your dad gave great advice. I haven't traveled near as much as I would like to combination of work and finances I guess.

Hopefully none of them pull a USC situation from their overseas travels. We had classmates get arrested at an amusement park on a school trip for similar offenses

That was shoplifting wasn't it?

I’ve been to China twice. In 2018 and 2019. Great experience both times.

The most memorable experience was climbing a part of the Great Wall that looked down into North Korea. We could see North Koreans working in their fields using basic hand tools. That was trippy, thinking about how close I was to people who I could never visit, and who could never leave.

Anyhow, I suspect this might be high on the propaganda scale. I would still let my kids go and have a discussion about how to evaluate information sources.

Background,....in mid 80's, Xi was an agricultural official for a state in China. He was part of a contingent invited to the state to observe agricultural systems in Iowa. Muskieville was a perfect place for him, major processing facilities and very major ancillary facilities(chemical, transportation, R&D,...). He spent 6 weeks in town.

A couple of years before Xi became "president", he visited again in my family home neighborhood. This summer a contingent of Chinese officials will visit 4 US locations, LA, MPLS, Chicago and Muskieville,.....one doesn't look like the others,

Our youngest son took 4 years of Chinese at MHS(2013). Two more years at ISU. He would have loved the opportunity these kids had.

Well, I went to Australia and made it back alive, but didn't encounter any critters that were lethal, other than the Blokes I met at the pub.

Does China have pubs??

Most countries outside the US are very welcoming to foreigners, especially in the middle East. It's part of their culture.

You can get same day passport if you have proof of urgent travel. Have to go in person to Minneapolis (maybe 4-5 other places in the country that offer). Had to do a few years back.
I believe there are two different "expedited" application/renewals depending on how close you are to your travel date and the purpose of the trip. There's the urgent-but-not-emergency version that you can still do through the mail, and the super-duper-emergency one you mentioned that is in person only with same day processing. Both require proof of intent to travel (i.e. already purchased plane tickets, lodging, etc.).

I'll win this. I got to stay in Loup City, Nebraska.

Yeah, maybe. Did you ever have coffee at the grain elevator in Voorhies, Ia?
Ponca City, OK to visit an oil refinery.

Flew in to Tulsa on a Sunday and drove the two hours there. Major storms that night resulted in the distillation tower - the heart of the refinery - getting struck by lightning and shutting the whole thing down. It was supposed to be a 48 hour trip and I ended up not leaving until Saturday after they finally got everything back up and running so I could finish commissioning our equipment.

If you're ever there, try The Rusty Barrel for steaks or Dixie Dog for a milkshake.
