Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

If the rumors of Ohio State making another run at McDermott are true, he won't be available for Iowa to hire anyway so it all may be moot.

I have no idea why...but I never even thought of this opportunity. Would GMac leave a good situation to attempt a rebuild at Iowa? He leads THE program on his campus now...at either OSU or UI he would clearly be the second most important program on campus no matter how successful he was!

THIS! Iowa has the money to spend to try to rebuild the fanbase...hiring the right type of coach would be the first step in doing so. Iowa fans would kill to have a TJ clone...and it doesn't matter if he has ties to Iowa or this region. Goetz best not hire the obvious choice solely becuase the fans expect it. And I assume she wouldn't...she seems to be on her game as an AD already.
Didn't know how to rate this. I disliked it because I don't like the reality at the end even though I think you are spot on.

Are the hawk fans screaming because they didn't get a flagrant foul when that Perkins kid totally took out Dix. It was flagrant contact to the head and the officials didn't even look at it.

Yeah...I get that...I enjoy the lack of support the UI MBB program receives...it is so funny to me! And I hope it continues for decades! That said...Iowa needs a reset and that is a chance things could improve for them...but I hope not!

McDermott has built his resent teams based on a trusted fanbase where basketball is the program. He also has embraced the transfer portal with boosters who are willing to provide top of the market NIL to collect the best talent. I just don't see Mac wanting to take over a rebuilding EIU program that has none of that support as his last job. McD is proven coach that will have multiple options IF he wants to leave Omaha that would be much better/easier fits.

Because he recruited one class that got to hang around forever and had a kid. I mean it all makes sense.
He reloaded nicely this year and only has one guy that can't return next year. Not to mention the 4 star he has redshirting due to an injury his senior year.

I’m not saying this just hoping they keep him around, but he probably does deserve it.
You're not wrong. Considering what that program is, and what it's been this century, Fran may very well be the high water mark. If he'd made even 1 sweet 16, the narrative would be so different. He gets that failure beaten over his head incessantly. Not that I blame anyone for doing that. It's a valid criticism. But that argument sort of sucks all of the air out of the room when you're trying to discuss his tenure.

His kid and Brodie. Had Brodie not gotten the extra year there is no way they're close to as good as they are.
Yes, those two are important pieces, but the last I heard there are more than two guys on the court at any given time. Those other guys aren't a bunch of schlubs.

Lisa would fit nicely and be a perfect groundbreaking replacement for Frances

His brother playing there and that family being die hard Hawks also plays into it. Had it been Barta, it's a slam dunk. We don't know what Goetz's philosophy in hiring is.

If I'm Iowa I would be looking for a coach with strong ties to Chicago and Minneapolis and worry less about who has ties to the school. Yes, TJ has Iowa State ties but it's because he coached here. IMO he's more successful because of his recruiting tie's than his school affiliation.

I wouldn't leave Creighton for a lot of jobs. The dedication to basketball there can't be topped by very many schools.

Agree, its a great job, only gig in town, 1 hell of an arena. And the Big East is a good/great conference. I am sure Greg is making nice coin as well.
