Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

I see two more win chances remaining on their schedule. Not guaranteed wins, but there’s a chance they may win.

Their AD must thank CC every day for keeping the spotlight off of what truly has become the darkest point in Iowa basketball since Tom Davis was fired. They probably had worse teams, but at least then the fans were angry. They just don’t care anymore. To see this program fall apart and be left with this is just sad. And by sad, I really mean enjoyable.

No joke, I was with a buddy last night who is a pretty big Iowa fan. I asked him how the game was going and he honestly didn't know it was on. That's the point Iowa basketball is at.

Their youngest son also killed a dude this past Summer so it might be time for a change of scenery.
The boy has already made it know he will not be attending EIU, and I get the feeling their fan base is tired of Fran's kids getting playing time over better players and are fine with the youngest not attending EIU.
Their new AD already went after freerents kid and cut him off at the knees by saying they would be moving on during the season, I really doubt she is now going to turn her focus on Fran and force him out the door. No way Fran is going to get a job that pays even half of what he is now making, so him leaving on his own is EIU fans wishful thinking.

Fran has only himself to blame, he refuses to stress any sort of defense, loves the tall lanky kids that can run the floor and shoot the 3, but their lack of defense just kills them. He refuses to understand that college bb is driven by guard play, and he continues to bring in slow white guards to run the show and they get abused by the more athletic guards in the league. Look at what the ISU guards did them, think of a whole team of players like Pav and that is EIU.
Lastly, he plays his own children over better players and everyone that watches and can see him doing it. He continues to play his son at the 3 position forcing Sanford to play the 4 because Pat has to get his minutes. I get that Pat has had a lot of physical problems with his cancer, but the kid just has not improved and he was born the same month and year as Haliburton, who is in this 3rd season in the NBA. The only kid I would want off their roster is Freeman, outside of that forget it.

Jack will end up at Iowa with Fran. Book it

He wants to go to Notre Dame but they've scouted him and aren't offering. They want a better player at his position, so if he commits, unlikely ND offers.

He's more likely a mid major player. So he either ends up in the Valley, or goes to Iowa.

That's honestly how I felt in 2020-2021 with Prohm.

I don't know if I ever got to the point of just not knowing a game was even being played. I'd still watch, hoping to see some things from the younger players.

Agreed. I welcome the idea. Basketball in the state is so much better when both top programs are good. It’s not like we rely on in state recruits that we have to battle Iowa for. There’s really not much downside to Iowa having a competent coaching staff. And maybe Devries isn’t that, but it gives them hope. Which then turns to misery when they fail. Which is equally fun. Fan apathy isn’t fun for the fans or for their rivals.
DeVries doesn't recruit Iowa either. His kid is the only Iowan on his roster.

He gets a lot from JUCO and the portal.

Most of the EIU roster are mid major players, I would think the only way he ends up at EIU would be that is his only P5 offer. Reading their boards, the kid has seen what his brothers have had to go through, and he wants a fresh start somewhere else if possible. I agree he would like an ND offer.

I got so sick of the 5 out watch one guy try to take on 4 and take a bad shot offense....man that was rough. So glad TJ was an instant shot in the arm.

Is DeVries really the best coach out there for Iowa to get? I mean...it is a subjective question but geography is certainly playing a role in our projections in this situation, right? He might be a great hire...or he might be another successful mid-major coach that flames out when given a shot in a bigger league? Who knows...but if Iowa is only looking for a coach in their own backyard then it seems they just might not be hiring the best coach out there.

His brother playing there and that family being die hard Hawks also plays into it. Had it been Barta, it's a slam dunk. We don't know what Goetz's philosophy in hiring is.

Whenever Fran and Iowa part ways, I would imagine the pool that Goetz selects from isn't going to just include DeVries. If it does, she's no better than Barta.

THIS! Iowa has the money to spend to try to rebuild the fanbase...hiring the right type of coach would be the first step in doing so. Iowa fans would kill to have a TJ clone...and it doesn't matter if he has ties to Iowa or this region. Goetz best not hire the obvious choice solely becuase the fans expect it. And I assume she wouldn't...she seems to be on her game as an AD already.
