Let me get ahead of this - I love jones. I think he would be fine in the starting lineup this entire year. He and HW basically split minutes anyway (fouls pending).

But - the season started with Ward as a starter - I think he has earned the right to be considered as starting again. This probably won't matter in the long run - but is there a possibility this happens? Or if it isn't broke don't fix it?

If he didn't get hurt, we would probably be in the same place, I'm sure. I just think he should start at some point again. I am interested in others' thoughts.

If it’s not broken, don’t fix it

I doubt he cares, and I don’t any of the players care especially considering minutes looks similar. Coaching staff and the team are rolling right now so I hope no changes are made. I’m actually seeing a really high ncaa tournament ceiling here as is. LFG Cyclones

Ward is doing well coming off the bench. Total minutes are more important than starting anyways. Bring Ward off the bench and get that second spark a few minutes into the game. Begin the game with working the guards and then bring Ward in to run the offense through the interior later. jones does quite well cleaning up after misses and handoffs from the guards.

These are grown men, I think they're at the "I wanna win" stage of life, not minutes/starts.
We have a great group.
This is exactly what Ward came back for when people thought he may transfer. He’s not only showcasing himself for a possible overseas career but a big part of a tournament run that could go deep if they catch fire.

There is a GIF of TJ in every game day thread hugging someone. You know who TJ sees in that GIF? He sees BRE hugging him.

They’re playing virtually the same amount of minutes anyway, depending on foul trouble and matchups. I like Hason’s length and athleticism off the bench. Gives a totally different look in that second group.

I think it was the Kansas game where TJ subbed him in around the 18:30 mark right away.
I think there is an argument to be made about running Hunter Dickinson off the floor. Making him run back on defense wears on that huge body and limits his minutes as a result.

I believe this is a strategy that TJ is using by playing Ward and BRE in tandem. Keeps our bigs fresh in the late stages of games.

Bringing Ward off the bench is a nice way to protect him from his own foul issues. Ideally we still maximize Ward's time on the court AND he is available to be part of closing lineups.

I think bringing Ward off the bench prevents him picking up 2 quick fouls. He seems to sub in around 17 minute mark anyway.
Was going to say that BRE is a little more physical so he will pick up a foul but set the physical bar higher so when Ward comes in, light fouls like body touches in blocks are not called as much. They really compliment each other well.

Who starts between the two could be as simple as which of the two of them is better at the center jump to start the game. Other than that they are getting pretty much the same minutes.

It would be nice if one of the two of them distanced themselves from the other at the free throw line. It would be nice if we had one that could be in there at the end of games who was more like a 65%+ FT shooter rather than in the 50s.

Against Texas, I believe neither Rob or Hasan were in the game. I assume TJ went with the smaller, better FT shooting lineup, including Tre as the 5.

Maybe Ward's foot isn't completely healed and limiting minutes is a way to have it from re-injuring it.

I think we're better with Ward but starting Jones avoids ward getting in early foul trouble which has happened.
