MLB: Schilling Cubs 5th starter?

Not as good as Peavy, but you don't have to give up any talent and pretty much have nothing to lose by bringing him aboard. I'm sure he'd just retire if he couldn't cut it anymore. I'd certainly try him out before throwing money at him, but this move sounds like a good deal to me.

Schilling said that money wasn't an issue and it certainly couldn't hurt to have his postseason big game experience on board. Maybe as a "6th" (part-time) starter until we see how his shoulder holds up. The part-time starter role might be a better fit for a 40 something year old coming off of shoulder surgery, anyway. If nothing else, invite him to spring training if he is seriously interested. Just my 2 cents.

i think its defintely worth a shot to see if he can come back and perfom... if he doesnt make the rotation he will retire and you really lose nothing, just slide marshall into the rotation

EDIT: I could definitely see him and Marshall splitting the 5th starter spot, and the a veteran with tons of postseason experience could help the young guys out

Bring him to camp as a non-roster invite and see what he can do. If he can bring the goods, sign him to a minor league deal and send him to Des Moines. The I-Cubs would love it.

ummm....why not. You'd take Sean Marshall over Schilling? His last year (2007) ERA was 3.87 with a WHIP of 1.245, both of which are equal or better than Marshall's best year. They have two starters who are hurt and are almost guaranteed of missing a considerable amount of time. Schilling is tough and knows how to win. Something this time lacks. They need a leader with some fire. Even if you'd rather have Marshall over Schilling, temporarily starting Marshall in the bully sounds like a good contingency plan until Z and Hardin start missing starts.

You're right about that, and that is in fact the Cubs plan for the first 40 games, since they have 5 days off.

No way he signs as a minor league deal. He'll sign with the Jays or stay retired before he does that.

That sounds fine to me. Even the best case scenario has Hardin missing starts.
