live from Austin

I think Terry probably steadied the ship some when all that Beard stuff went down and had the players on his side.
Yeah, it was too late to go get anyone else iirc. Terry is generally respected as a decent person I believe, which was also something appealing with how Beard went out the door.

But he just isn't that good a coach, esp in this conference. Had enough talent laying around to have a decent season, make the tournament, so you can't fire him. But the more time he's in charge, the more influence he has on the results, and the worse they get.

So nice guy, but bad coach in over his head. Remind you of anyone??

If they bring him back for next year, they may be a .500 team.

Was at the game, I just have to post something.

-lot of Cyclone fans there, I still say Austin is the best place to go to a game, fans are very nice.

-i have been to this arena a lot, it's very nice, but the crowd just blows. While it is way better than what they had, it's just not a very intimating place vs Hilton. It's just very manufactured, nobody has any clue when to make noise, the basketball IQ is so low, they just have no idea.

-be thankful for Hilton everyone, it's so much better than 95% of the places out there, we really are very very spoiled.

-Texas is very, very poorly coached. I cannot stress this enough. I would say they need to make a change, but they will be fine in the SEC, and be an 9 seed every year and they will be stuck with this guy.

-Tyrese has to get out of there, he plays weak, slow, and he's playing off guard, he has to get out this off season, his career is over if he doesn't. If I were him I would go to Kansas. I feel terrible for him, just a really bad basketball decision. Good for money, but he can get money anywhere.

-off the ball we really, really physical with Tyrese but especially Abmas, and it really bothered him. Gilbert gave him a very intentional body check right off the bat and put him on the floor, and then Tamin just crushed him off the ball on the next possession. Both should have been fouls but we got lucky. It was a very very good game plan off the bat. Abmas is just too small to really make a big difference.

-I think there was 1 foul called in the first 10 minutes. We were crazy physical right off the bat.

-Bob has a leg injury in the 2nd half, I don't know if it was a cramp or what, but he couldn't guard anyone, and was really hurting us, and Texas knew it. they should have fouled him honestly. This is not an anti Rob thing, the kid was injured and he needed to be taken out. It really was obvious at the game, I have no idea what was going on there. He even came back in after a timeout. It was crazy to watch in real time.

-I have no idea what that T was for, the Texas announcer was horiffic, half the time he just didn't announce anything.

-the game was officiated very very different from 1H to the 2H.

-the game really should not have been nearly as close as it was, we have by far and away a better team, but a great road win either way.

-we are not very good in the half court with a lead, it is what it is right now. the first half was about as good as a half as I can remember for any Iowa State team, simply awesome. the 2h, ehhhhh.....but it was enough!!!!

Go Clones!

Kansas is in bad shape if they take Tyrese next year. IF they do it would be a back up roll. I could have seen them taking him when he transfered from Iowa State when he had huge upside. Not now though unless they strike out on who they are going after. Tyrese should transfer to Marquette and play for Shaka.

Wouldn't Hunter have to apply for a waiver to play immediately if he transferred again? He's already used up his 1 free transfer and this is his 3rd season so unless he graduates and uses the graduate exception he may have to sit out a year for a 2nd transfer right? I can't keep up with all these changes with transfer rules anymore...

Current rules, based on most recent court rulings, are that there are no rules. I wish I was making that up.

Given the pro prospects for a great defender that is 6’0” and can’t shoot, it might very well be a good choice for him to take the redshirt and stretch the college paycheck if he’s not sick of school.

Terry seems like one of the great assistant coaches that just struggles in the big chair. Great guy to have on the staff, players like him, but not really good on the X's and O's part of the game.

Not fouling down 3 with 40 seconds left while we were in 1 and 1 was baffeling.
Best case your going to make a stop with 10 seconds left, throw up a three to tie. Lot has to go right in that scenario.
Similarly, I was shocked in the possession before that with 1:10 left to play. That may have been with one where our post player brought the ball up the floor even. No pressure on the ball at all

Tyrese's biggest issue at Texas to me is they are playing him out of position. Most of the time I've watched their games, he's playing off the ball in a two-guard role. He's not big enough and not a good enough shooter for that, I think he'd be better in a point-guard / play-maker role. His shooting overall (FG%) is markedly better this year (46% vs. 39% in both of the two previous years), but I haven't watched enough of their games to know why that is. His shot certainly didn't look very good last night. I recall at ISU he was great at getting to the basket but often struggled to finish when he got there.

Texas backcourt is just too small if you ask me. I think it's the biggest source of their struggles. Their frontcourt is fine and Disu looks like a potential lottery pick. Hunter is talented on both sides of the ball and Abmas is obviously a great shooter/scorer but they're both listed at 6'0" / 175. The other starting guard Weaver is 6'3" 180 scarecrow. That's just not enough size and strength to compete in a physical league with old players.

If he does transfer I am sure it would be Marquette, 1 last go at home.

Hunter is flat out not a 2-guard. He’s not good enough with the ball to create his shot AND isn’t an efficient or volume scorer. I’m not sure if that was a pre-requisite to go to Texas, but he needs to move back to the point.

I think Hunter would have continued to develop with Chris Beard. That has not and is not going to happen under Rodney Terry. As was mentioned above, he needs to get out of there.

How many times can the one year free agent pros transfer? If they can transfer twice with no sitting out it might as well be unlimited between seasons.

I totally agree with everyone he should get out if he can, but a free agent makes a choice and in every other pro sport that choice comes with a contract they sign during free agency, sometimes one year but far more often multi year. Maybe with the 4/5 year limit for college sports one year contracts or one year “nil agreements” is just the permanent norm. I do wonder if there has yet been a case where a player gets the bag and flakes without playing, like an NIL Ben Simmons situation.

I think it says a lot about our staff at ISU how they have developed Lipsey from year 1 to 2 while Hunter has basically regressed over 2 years at Texas. Tamin and Tyrese are similar in build and both had their offensive struggles at times their freshman year.

Tamin's FG% is actually down from last year but that is because his 3pt attempts have gone way up and he's shooting the 3 at 38% now vs 20% last year. His FT% is down but across the board in about 1.5 minutes more a game everything else is up across the board. Tamin is an elite defender at 3.1 spg which is up from his already good 2.2 last year.

Tyrese is shooting a better FG% this season than the previous 2 but hasn't made any significant gains anywhere else in his game. Hasn't had a spike in his scoring or increase in 3pt%, his FT% this year is this worse over his 3 seasons, last year his assists were half of what he had his freshman year, for the most part he's been very consistent statistically across the board in most areas all 3 seasons. For someone playing as many minutes as he has with the talent potential he should have seen some noticeable improvements and statistical increases by now. There will always be that "what if" had he stayed at ISU and developed but on the flip side I think Lipsey is turning out to be the better player of the 2 and also has embraced being a Cyclone.

I have this fear as well but not sure it's an ideal fit assuming DaJuan Harris uses his covid year. Bill Self would get a lot more out of him than Rodney Terry is though.

My hope and prediction is Tyrese follows Beard to Ole Miss.

Didn't Beard have him for an offseason? Did he develop him at all during that time?

I predict he will go wherever the money is best - whether that's staying in Austin or moving elsewhere.

For whatever reason, he is just more focused on the short term than long term. IDK if he doesn't think he can play professionally anywhere good, doesn't want to make a career out of basketball, or just needs the money now and damn the future. Or maybe he is just a "one marshmallow" guy, idk.

Carr and Rice lead that team last year after Beard's dismissal. Backcourt of Hunter/Abmas is a big downgrade from Carr/Rice, defensively and offensively.

When you come from a situation like he did, most will look at the short term more than what could be 5-10 years from now. Hopefully things are much better financially and he can make a long term decision this off season as what will be best for his future and not what needs to be done to lift up his family.

I've had a few glimpses of how they show video all around the angled edges of the ceiling. It looks like a 360 degree video ribbon board that is about 20 feet high above the highest seating. What was it like in person? Was it actual video, not just projections of images like at the Sprint Center in KC?
It's video but grainy the center court screens are much better
