Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

He's gone. The administration is a mess at Indiana State right now. The AD that hired him got fired by a lame duck president over the president's mistake. It's a bad situation.

Schertz was 337-69 at Lincoln Memorial (D2). Turns out that if you win 83% of your games at any level chances are good you're a pretty decent coach. His offensive mind is special. Everybody says we're only going to shoot 3s and layups, his team actually does. He actually runs the style the every Iowa fan says they want.
I would be interested to know more.

Might be an empty office in Bloomington sometime soon...

Indiana State had the best baseball season in school history this spring and due to an upset had a chance to host a Super Regional. They declined and the president said it was because the Special Olympics of Indiana had their annual games on campus there that weekend and they couldn't accommodate the NCAA. Indiana State had to go to TCU and lost the Super Regional.

After it happened, the president of the Special Olympics of Indiana released a statement saying they would have been more than happy to work with Indiana State Athletics so that they could host the Super Regional and then someone FOIA'd the emails between the AD and the president where the president outright said no because Athletics isn't important enough to make everyone else change plans. The President, rightfully, took all sorts of heat for it and announced she was going to retire June 2024. In December, as a lame duck, she fired the AD without cause and paid out his contract while saying he'd resigned.

In his place she appointed Greg Lansing's ex-wife Angie who had a whole bunch of scandals involving missing money the last time she was interim AD. It's a mess from bottom to top there.

Hawk fan friends keep telling me he's a better Bowen Born.

The problem with that is that he isn't the shooter and ballhandler that Born is, he doesn't have the outstanding lateral quickness that Born has and doesn't seem have anywhere near the basketball instincts Born has.

I don't get it either.
Harding isn’t even close to as good as Born. @7Got6 and other Iowa fans hyped him up and he’s actually pretty bad.

Holy crap that craptacular. Why the hell would a school turn down an NCAA tournament hosting opportunity? THe free pub and the money had to be worth some extra work. That is really dumb.

Fran has 4 NCAA wins in 14 years (won't get one this year).

TJ has 2 in 3 (this year not over yet, but at least one is pretty likely).
Prohm had 3 in 6 years.
Fred had 4 in 5.

9 wins vs 4 in the same amount of time is a huge gap...and I'd argue a LOT of ISU teams have underperformed in the tournament with only TJ's sweet 16 team outperforming expectations.

Fran's sole achievement is winning one B10 tournament in 14 years and ISU has four conference tournament titles in that time with the Big 12 being the radically tougher conference to win.

I'd have wanted Fran gone about 4-5 years in after it was clear he rebuilt but rebuilt to a permanently slightly below mediocre level.
TJ has 3 wins in 2 years. That’s 10 wins in the same time frame.

It’s not that refuses, he just can’t.
It might be a can't now but it is because he was slow to understand the portal, NIL and changing landscape. He could have capitalized off players like Garza and Murrays but didn't. Top that off with playing the kids when others should have their time and yea, you are going to strike out in the portal.

Illinois has all that in both sports and rarely does anything. DePaul in big east is an insane underachiever since their 70s/80s run. Illinois should be a blue blood in college hoops by now if they could even get the third best kid in their state every year.
Illinois fan as well as isu. Getting talent is not Illinois problem. Team is loaded and has been most years wth underwood. Classic big 10 team in the tournament for whatever reason

There is a great article that just dropped in The Athletic on Indiana St coach Josh Schertz. Really good read. Sorry but don’t know how to link it from my phone. Any other Athletic subscribers that can post it?
That Indiana State coach is something special. He may get tempted leave in the not too distant future.
