49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

So all he had to do was drastically reduce the most negative stat in football that costs your team games.

Allen is really fun to watch, and I know you're not saying this, but people like to throw the turnover thing like it's some marginal thing. It's like a shooting guard that can't shoot.

It's the "game manager" nonsense. People that don't understand the game think that being the guy that is best suited to pull a Houdini and turn a doomed play into something huge every once in a while is how you define a great QB. Guess what, when a play got blown up or was thrown off schedule, Tom Brady was pretty **** worthless at that.

Here's the reality. The Bills won half of their 10 regular season games when Allen had a QBR of under 90. The 49ers won one game in which Purdy did that (and was barely under at 86.7).

In fact, the two teams that did the best job of winning games when their QB did not have a great game were the Bills and Ravens. Supposedly two teams that are super reliant on their QBs.

Josh Allen isn't deserving of being an MVP finalist. It's about performance, not highlight reels and a completely made-up narrative about how much is on his shoulders.
Allen was third in ESPN QBR (not traditional rating), Purdy was 1st, Lamar 4th. Third in EPA, Purdy 1st, Lamar 8th. Third in EPA+CPOE, Purdy 1st, Lamar 7th. And these are all things that measure actual performance and impacts on games. Dak was second in all of those by the way. So really, the biggest undeserving member of that group of finalists is Lamar, who's probably going win because of head to head over Purdy and people overrating QBWINZ.

The human reaction to Brock Purdy is beyond my humble mind's ability to understand. I don't even begin to understand. Maybe that's why I'm reclusive, I don't know why the majority believe what they believe. I'm a man apart. I do not have a clue why so many people think about BP as they think. It is a mystery to me.

I agree %110, but I "get" (sadly) the "hate" (sadly).
I hated Tom Brady, for the simple-stupid reason that he's the GOAT. BP is nowhere near GOAT status, nor ever will be, but like TB, he's got that, "All American, goodie two shoes, Jesus freak thing," hanging over his attractive white head.
Hope this makes "sense," even tho it shouldn't.

I mean, for as much attention as offenses get, strong defense still seems to be the key to enabling winning consistently.
I think most everyone knows that to be true in their hearts but having Fred's success didn't really help some people's ability to accept not having a potent offense. We had epically bad offenses though, so it's not really fair to blame anyone for being so loathe to it.

No matter what Purdy does, the haters won’t change what they think of him. You can’t convince people who think Purdy can’t do anything right. If Niners win the Super Bowl, they won despite Purdy. If Niners lose, it is all because of Purdy.

49er fans are everywhere in the states, so it's more beneficial for shock-jocks to rile up the fan base for more clicks.

I do not know what more Brock can do for himself physically, he could be tapped out, which is ok (his 10 yard split was 1.54 seconds, which is the same as Russell Wilson, that's not nothing). Mentally though, that's where he'll need to make his $$$. He may never be able to have the ability of a Lamar/Allen and even Mahomes, but he doesn't have to anymore to be successful in the set-up he's in. Mentally gifted athletes aren't going to get the respect until they have the championships, while physically gifted are always gonna get instant props. Physically, it's the instant feedback that you're watching someone special.

Anyone get can smarter, but not everyone and get bigger or taller or faster, so everyone judges different, but for Brock, that's ok.

Really astute take.

Yeah, but why do they think that way?

I've begun attempting to educate myself, in a slow, lazy, half-hearted sort of way, about epistemology (political ideology was my motivation, but now along comes this hatred of BP):

> Epistemology is the investigation of what distinguishes justified belief from opinion. <

I have no idea why these people think this way. You won’t convince them no matter what. They look at the incredible numbers Purdy put up this year and think it is all due to supporting casts. I also have no idea why they keep bringing up Lamar Jackson when discussing elite QBs. He is a great runner with adequate passing skills who usually chokes in big games.

It's partially a 49ers thing. They have been good for decades and BOUNCED a lot of teams out of the playoffs over the years. So they are hated. Also he doesn't look like a super hero. 6'5" with big broad shoulders, rocket arm. Or can run fast like 4.3 Lamar. It's easy to see how those players are "great" because it shows up in the physical skills. Brock's super power is mental processing. Plus throwing accuracy. Plus some athleticism to buy time to throw. He just doesn't look as much the part.

Jalen Hurts is the same height and weight; Aaron Rodgers is 6-2, one inch taller but again the same weight. I didn't look further than those two. The "49ers thing" makes some sense, then.

Read a couple of SFGate articles today about the Purdy hubbub:

The discourse around 49ers' Brock Purdy is worse than ever. Is one man to blame?

Lombadi is just a lame excuse to slander Purdy. I would like to see the national media dissect Jackson’s numbers. Lamar Jackson hype is so so much worse than Purdy hype. The sad thing is that most people believe his hype is true. He fumbled 12 times this year and lost 6. No one bring this up.

I have no problem with Lombardi's takes. ;)
