Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

Maryland's Jahmir Young kisses it off window to secure win at Iowa
Gotta love Sandfort. After he jumps all over Freshman Freeman for fouling at the end of the shot clock, he promptly turns the ball over twice against the press and gets caught flat-footed at the most important moment of the game and olés Jahmir Young on his winning layup. Then he air-balls the winning shot by 10'.

I am really going to miss Fran. Said it prior to the season, but I'll say it again, I feel like we're getting close to a day where we wake up and he is no longer the coach of the U of I MBB program
Depending on how this season ends it could be this year. If they totally tank the rest of the way.

I hate to say this. But there's no reason Iowa shouldn't be able to build a competitive basketball program under competent and energetic management. I think we might be headed back to the heyday of the rivalry during the Hoiberg term/the best of the Fran era when both teams were relevant nationally.

Iowa has so many mid major players on that roster.

Iowa is #56 on Torvik. Good for 8/14 in the Big Ten.

But if you put them in the MVC...

#27 Indiana State
#54 Drake
#56 Iowa
#63 Bradley
#97 Southern Illinois
#101 Northern Iowa
#132 Murray St.
#153 Missouri St.
#156 Belmont
#164 UIC
#225 Illinois St.
#242 Evansville
#273 Valpo

Doesn't look so bad now does it?

I'd hate Fran if I were a UNI fan. There has to be a strong correlation between Fran "stealing" all the Iowa kids that would have normally been Panthers to build mediocre teams and UNI's decline. Put those guys in the Valley where they belong and I imagine UNI is one of the better programs in the conference rather than being stuck in the doldrums the past decade whenever they didn't have AJ Green around killing it.

Would be $8.52 million after this year. Beth either needs to pay the buyout or add a year into his contract after this year since he will only have 4 years remaining after this year. Without reupping him for one more year, the buyout next year would be $6.48 million. So she would save 2 million by firing him next if she doesn’t extend him a year. So she will have a decision to make.

Doesn't the Big Ten have an infinite money printer in the back somewhere?

Serious question. When Illinois visits Iowa this year, what happens if the Orange Krush invades Hawkeye-Carver Arena on an Orange Krush road trip like they had planned to do last year?

Because plenty of good seats are available, what does the AD do?

a) Not allowed like last year

b) Order more pizza

c) Give them coupons for next year

d) Convince the CR Boys and Girls Clubs it won't be as boring as last year

d) Other (please explain)
Flood the floor for a hockey match?

Says Iowa averaged 6,800 in Gustafson’s senior year. Almost double the 4K that was cited here.
He understated it some, but "almost double" is a stretch AND her first three years the average was most like 4,800-4,900. So it's not like it was a completely baseless statement. Who cares anyways? Big women's basketball attendances are a GOOD thing.

Looking at the official NCAA attendance numbers, since 2010 it's pretty consistent for ISU which I would have expected. Womens remarkably consistent, and the light years on Men's side being Fred's first year and TJ's first year picking up the pieces of McDermott/Prohm disasters.

On the Iowa side, end of Gustafson and into the CC era there has obviously been massive growth from a traditionally 4,000-5,000 per game number to near capacity. Obviously the question would be, once CC is gone do the fans stay? There will naturally be a drop off, but if they are in the 9,000-10,000 like ISU always then that's awesome for the sport.

For the Iowa men though, Fran's first few good teams got a pick up in attendance before a slight dip back down until the massive decline this year. Less than 10,000 per game would be embarassing, considering Iowa has never had MBB attendance average below 10,000 in any of the years the NCAA has official records of attendance (back to the late 70's). Even worse is that the actual butts in seats in clearly worse. That's got to be a concern from an AD side.

I did watch a lot of the second half of the Iowa game and then watched the Iowa game. ISU players seemed to play a lot more disciplined, where as Iowa players just seemed to play all over the place. It just seemed our players flow together more than Iowa's does. The physique of all our players compared to Iowa is very different. Ward, Big Rob, Tamin, etc, have put a lot of work in the weight room. These guys are muscled up. The majority of Iowa's guys look like a wet noodle longing for some Viagra.

FYI- Go Iowa Awesome had a few posts really questioning Fran's recruiting of mostly white players and very few black players.

Iowa basketball S&C is virtually non-existent.

Bowen has barely played and hasn't scored in their last 2 games I noticed. He seems like a good kid with decent potential. Hope he can get out of Iowa City for his last seasons of eligibility.
I don't watch the Hoks much - usually just catch some highlights. I'm assuming that Bowen lacks the outside shooting touch that Fran's system demands. However, he was arguably their best player when they played against us. This isn't to imply that he is a legitimate P6 player, but he has natural quickness paired with decent length to play defense and attack the rim. He should have been assigned to Young in that 2nd half - and especially on that last play of the game.

Fred took a pay cut at Nebby which seems to be working out for the Huskers this year. Hate to see Fran go!

Yeah, Bowen has always stood out to me when they've played teams with athleticism. He had probably his best game as a freshman vs. Duke last year in a game where he was the only one who looked like he belonged on the court. The shooting is a decent assumption as to why he doesn't play as much as a guy like Dix just for example. He is Joe Toussaint 2.0 who has gone on to a successful career as a Big 12 player after warming Fran's bench for years.

I think it is because of necessity and not necessarily what he wants. Fran tries to recruit black players, but has a hard time getting them to come to Iowa. I’m guessing that he doesn’t and isn’t getting the support needed to get those players especially in the NIL era.

Support from who? Athletic Department? Recruiters? Families of recruits? NIL? Marge? Newspaper reading, knitting, or football only type fans?

Just face the fact that Fran's recruiting circle is like a 250 mile radius around Iowa City for the majority of his players or that he can't recruit. Marge probably forbids him from going out on the road any further than that.

Patrick and Harding from the current team as well. Others on Iowa this year like Mulvey and Brauns probably should be at the D2 level. Jury out on a guy like Dambele, too.
Brauns was barely playable at Belmont last year and that was in super short stretches when the other team went small. I have zero idea how anyone, other than Fran I guess, could look at that kid and go 'I need him in the Big Ten.'

There's a reason he ended up in the Ohio Valley originally.

The entire tide of Fran's recruiting and killing UNI happened the minute he swooped in way late to take Kriener and Pemsl. That's when Fran stopped trying to legitimately recruit at the Big Ten level. UNI expects lose kids that we offer early to Wisconsin and Creighton (Gasser, Davidson, Essegian, Davis, Crowl, McAndrew), the killers are the kids that should be at the Valley level that Fran comes in way late on.
