*** Official Kansas State vs #23 IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

Something I like--and there will be games where it doesn't work out- is that ISU has a guy like Milan to get the ball too late in games to ice it like Houston or get free throws. And Lipsey's FT % is down this year but I feel just fine with him going too.

Also props to Ward last night for sinking two with a 30-some % going in.

Oh wow…I hadn’t seen that. That is a real foul stepping on foot and tripping leg. Their only real gripe is the inadvertent elbow that would not have been called flagrant if reviewed, we had a boatload of crap calls.

There must have been some replay on the broadcast that looked like he just fell down…actually makes me feel better about MM as a closer because I thought he tripped himself.
He didn't step on his foot, their feet just collided, I don't know enought to know if that's a foul or not but nobody stepped on anyone's foot.

They both played like leaders when Tamin had a below avg game for him. In the first half MM was doing a lot more than scoring too, he also had a sick pass toward end of game that caused ksu to foul the shooter.
I'd give player of the game to Keshon, his hustle and effort was consistent throughout the game and he got some huge tough rebounds. I was surprised he only had 1 assist.

Our bigs were absolutely abysmal as well. King, Ward, and BRE combined for SEVEN of our 38 rebounds. That's simply inexcusable.
King just had a horrible game all around, but Ward and BRE combined for :
40 min, 16 pts, 9 fouls, 5-5 FG, 5 boards (3 offensive), 4 assists, 2 steals and ZERO turnovers.

I'd take that every game from the 5 position this year.

Interesting that Tang refused in his postgame to answer the three or four questions regarding ‘the situation’. As a big of scene that he made during and after the game, it pretty weak to say ’not going to talk about it.’
I actually thought he was pretty professional in the post game presser. TJ said basically the same thing.

Yeah, I agree. If whatever caused the dustup didn't amount to something huge and unsightly, no reason to make it an international incident. Seems likely that it was a heat of the moment thing and just move on from it like gentlemen.

Sticks his right foot in there, does look like a foul, especially with all the fouls called, not sure how they could let that go.

I think it's probably a foul. Milan is clearly within his "cylinder". His foot isnt' extended out or anything. The K-State defender's foot is out in front of his body. While not egregious, I think it's tripping.

Our buddy King kept saying he tripped over his own feet which just isn't true.

Actions speak louder than words. It's like the abusive husband being "polite and approachable" out in public but then being a terrible human being when the doors are closed. Screw the precalibrated "professional" coach speak he read off in the presser. Anyone can do that.

It was 100% inadvertent but it's still a foul. Does that get called on the road? I highly doubt it.

At times I believe the bigs' job is to clear out for the guards to get the boards to start the run out.

That appeared to be the case last night.
I've heard or read something similar about TJ in the past couple years, that the defense is geared towards the posts boxing out and the guards going after the ball, and that's why our guards have relatively high rebound numbers.

Rebounding needs to be better. A rate of 5 boards across an entire 40 minutes is extremely pathetic. The foul number was problematic, especially with the types of fouls we committed. Getting deked into the air and contesting shots they need to let go are the two primary examples.

Everything else though is good. TOs is beyond excellent and helps mitigate some of the rebounding futility. I just don't think that reboudning rate will be good enough against Dickinson on Saturday. He'll have 15-20 boards if it is.

How do you know their job is to rebound and not clear it out for the guards?

How is that 'pathetic' if it's not the purpose and the guards are getting to the ball for transition?

That's not how we run our scheme. We rebound down with our guards, which is why we've seen a lot of our guards have high rebounding games over the last couple years. Gilbert had 13 last night which is extremely high. We still outrebounded KSU by 11.

Just remembered last night during the second half, a Bayer commercial came on talking about sporting events leading to heart attacks and I was thinking "you shut the **** up" followed by "maybe I need an aspirin" lol.

Not sure I can remember many games like the ones we've had back to back where we gave up 99% of a big lead, and then just held it there for a long, long time until we took control back.

Do you even watch the game?

Watch them and tell me they are blocking out "for the guards". They are in the lane, often not putting a body on anyone, mistiming jumps, or (especially in the case of Rob) simply not grabbing the ball. In no way, shape or form are those scenarios where they are "clearing out for the guards".

I will say that TJ likely preaches for our guards to be active on the glass. Tamin is inherently aggressive and would be a good rebounding guard, on any team, regardless of the interior. Gilbert is someone who can be great or non-existent, with that often coinciding with his offensive performance, which is a byproduct of his aggression and effort. When he's aggressive (with smarts) and is playing hard? He does those things well. When he's not he will usually struggle (at both).

It's been brought up before but it's also important to note that our rebounding numbers are going to be skewed a bit because we're one of the best teams in the nation at turning teams over. KSU had 16 TO's last night and to go along with that, they only had 6 ORB, which is not that high. Comparatively, we had 11 ORB, which is high.

All of the 'pathetic' 'abysmal' stats last night favor ISU over a 4-2 in conference KSU team that was largely more athletic in several spots.

Tied in 3 pt % which I would not have guessed.
