My adult daughter and her fiance were having trouble with getting a car started last night so they called for advice. While they were on FaceTime I was trying to educate them on what to look for. Out of nowhere I spewed out one of the things my dad always said, "An engine needs two things to start: gas and spark. If it's not starting it's one of those two things." It was one of those two things and it's running fine now. But it got me thinking about what other things I need to be sharing with my kids.

What are the pieces of "wisdom" your dad bestowed on you that you find yourself saying aloud?

We didn't go out to eat super often but when we did my dad would always order a steak. When the waitress/waiter brought our food out and inevitably asked him if he wanted steak sauce, his canned response was always: "And ruin a good steak?"

I've said this myself with our daughters out at restaurants.

My dad said "piss up a rope" a lot. I remember always trying to visualize that as a kid and being very confused.

Whenever my old man was going somewhere, he would always tell my sister and I that he was "Going to see a man about a horse". Which meant as we later found out going golfing or drinking with his buddies. I still never got a horse.

My dad says a lot of interesting stuff. I'm not sure I'd call any of it wisdom. A few examples:

Put wish in one hand and sh!t in the other and see which one fills up first.

If the foo sh!ts, wear it.

You'd b!tch if they hung you with a new rope.

I don't give a flying f@ck at a rolling donut.

When I was a kid, every day when I left the house to go to school, my father would say "Act like SOMEBODY, today." Every single day he'd say it to me and my siblings. We always thought it was cool. It was his special thing, and it always felt like a directive on the right way to live. My brother actually got it tattooed on his bicep.

One time, when I was in my late 20s, I was visiting home, and watching television with my Dad. We were watching one of his favorite shows, about a sheriff in a small North Carolina town called Mayberry. And in that episode, the sheriff's son, "Opie" was leaving for school, and as he walked out the door, his dad said "Hey Ope... Act like SOMEBODY today."

I turned my head slowly towards my dad. He looked at me. Didn't say anything. But part of me died that day. And he knew it died.

My FIL has a lot of them but most are not appropriate (i.e. - racist and/or bigoted) and shouldn't be repeated. One is kina funny though: "He's more nervous than a fart in a frying pan"

Air. It also needs air.

A guy I used to work with always said that - "Gas, spark, air"
