*** Official #2 Houston vs IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

And if they didn’t start the game in a 14-0 hole, they beat us by double digits in Hilton. Credit to TJ for putting a ton of pressure on them early but Fran said it right - they’ll learn from our loss and be better for it.

I don’t think I’ve seen a better ball pressure team in recent years. Their guards are LEGIT.
That's silly. No way to know that at all. They could have started up 14-0 on us and ended up losing. They're very good, but we beat them. That's all we can say at this point.

Respectfully, I do not believe it is. I think we are actually just as 'bad' of a 3-point shooting team as any of TJ's teams.

Thus far this year against 'high major' teams, we're 35 - 120 for 29% - with the 2 "best" shooting nights being DePaul and Iowa. In 2 Big 12 games, we're 6 - 31.

The numbers against bad competition have REALLY skewed the metrics; against "decent" to good (to great) defenses, our offense simply has not run smoothly or consistently, thus far this year.
JFC all you have to do is actually watch this yrs team to see it is much more offensively talented including the 3 shot, then any of TJs previous teams.

Shocking how as soon as everyone is allowed to pay their players, KU suddenly isn't so dominant anymore. What could be the explanation for this??
I live in KC and have KU friends. Needless to say we don't talk basketball much. They don't seem to like my opinion of KU. You should hear the nonsense coming out of them these days. According to them everyone pays their players now so there obviously was nothing wrong in ever doing it. WTF? Start talking competitive advantage paying players while no one else can and they clam up and do the KU dickhead thing. They had a **** on their team last season and bought his son this year. Seems to be a lot of dicks around that program.

Rewatched the game yesterday morning, was just as good as live. Maybe better as I could listen to Fran - live I had 5 kids age 3-7 playing basketball/soccer in the living room.

Tamin is so good at forcing TO's in the middle third of the court. Loved the one people may not remember where he came up quick on a guy before he crossed half and surprised him, causing the guy to lose it OOB.

KG could not get a foul call on a drive to save his life but Tamin got them regularly. I'm wondering if refs just think KG flailing on all those, maybe overselling contact.

Houston had a physical hand on whoever had the ball when we were on offense. Freedom of movement was dead. Ball movement was great to overcome it.

Coming out 2-3 zone with just over a minute left was a nice switch up, we kind of fell back into man after a bit but confused and slowed down Houston. They ended up making the basket for the tie, but it made for less possessions which probably favored us at that point.

I haven't been around long enough.... but would this win qualify as one of our all time biggest?...top 10ish?
Dang that is a tough question. It sure was a fun game to be at though. Beat a highly ranked team, but held on for the W so no crazy comeback that makes life exciting. But it was pressure packed and a ton of fun.

Great pic!! Black dog sighting! Looks like a poodle or poodle mix. I would love to get an inside story on this. Has to be a working dog? Or, entertainment (hot seat guy??).

One day, when I was still working, a patient, a young man probably in his 30's was in our clinic getting PT. He had a working dog with him. I, being the curious type, asked him what he used the dog for, because to me it didn't seem like he would need a working dog. He told me he was a severe type 1 diabetic and uses the dog to let him know when his blood sugar is too low/high. He said the dog had saved him several times.

It is amazing what dogs can do, and be trained for. They are truly man's friend and helper!
Son had surgery in December. The day after the surgery a comfort dog came into the hospital visiting patients. It apparently comes every Friday. It was a great dane which works out really well since it is tall enough to visit patients who are even flat on their backs on hospital beds. My daughter was so upset she missed him since she had left about 15 minutes before the dog arrived.

I think you've nailed it on KG. Tamin is much more under control on his drives. I do think there's an thought of not rewarding an offensive player for being out-of-control, and you can defintely describe KG's drives that way fairly often.

KG is developing a floater away from being great...

Don't get me wrong... I hope they run the table... makes our win last night that much better.

I just think they are a bit overrated at this point. Don't really have a good win on their resume. The Big 12 will give them a lot of chances for good wins though. Will be interesting for sure.

Strongly disagree. I think they should jump to #1 if they pick up their 5th Quad 1 win on Saturday @ TCU.

I'd be curious to hear who you'd have ahead of them if you think they're "overrated" at #2?

FWIW Torrvik has Houston winning the conference in a landslide at 15-3. I don't think they go 15-3 but I would be surprised if they are anything worse than 13-5 which won the conference last year.

Gilbert was getting hand-checked so bad on Tuesday. His numbers weren't great in the box score but I was actually really impressed with him, got us going offensively with some early baskets, still put up four assists, and completely shut down Cryer, he's their leading scorer and he was a total non-factor. If he can improve his jump-shooting a little and develop a little floater he'll be a fantastic offensive player, and the defense is already there.

Liked this call. It was a bold move at a key point but it forced a tough mid range shot from Shead with awkward feet. Credit to him for knocking it down. He's one of the elite veteran guards in the game. Over 3,000 minutes of college basketball under his belt.

JFC? Really? Damn, didn’t think my take was controversial.

I’ve watched every minute this season and I do not see a drastically better offensive team nor a drastically better shooting team. Not in the eye test, and not in the stats.

Houston is NOT overrated. They have size, length, strength, athleticism, skill, playmakers, elite defense and good coaching. Iowa State is good enough to beat elite level teams in Hilton. Houston will be just fine in the Big 12.
Totally agree. Houston looked legit. Was thoroughly impressed by them. I think it’s one of the best wins of the TJ era.

Well yes in the stats.

We are shooting 35.8% from 3PT and are top 75 nationally in 3PT%. Milan and Tamin are both good 3PT shooters on a sizeable volume. Keshon has actually shot better in our higher quality games but his volume is super low just like at UNLV.

2023 - 33.1% (215th nationally)

2022 - 31.5% (278th nationally)

The season isn't over yet but here are the Kenpom offensive efficiency numbers:

2022-2023: #114
2023-2024: #51
