*** Official #2 Houston vs IOWA STATE Game(Day) Thread ***

Watched Sampson post-game on CTV. He looked shell shocked. Does he have a medical condition or maybe he was just pissed about the loss? Quite vague and slow delivery with his answers to questions. Anyway he was very complementary of the crowd, but not the officials. Put the loss on 22 FTs to 12. No credit to Iowa State players or coaches whatsoever.

Nope. That’s your typical Kelvin Sampson presser. Monotone, slow and boring. But damn is he a great coach. Really. We legitimately beat a top rated team tonight. Put it to you this way, Kelvin Sampson has no future in broadcasting or analyst work. A very vanilla approach much like Bob Huggins. Similarly, and eerily will deliver some good “one liners” though.

I'm not really saying that Ward should've just let those guys score. My point is that with Jones's rotations, he might not have let some of those guys get to the rim in the first place. If you're not able to acknowledge that Jones is fantastic at being in the right place to help and prevent guys from even getting all the way to the rim (exactly why Otz loves him so much), then I don't know what to tell you.

Yes, Ward is able to block some of those shots that BRE and King couldn't dream of blocking. But that doesn't matter on a night when completely unable to do that because Houston's guards were too good at getting into the body and forcing a foul. In that kind of situation, the guy who's able to prevent those shots in the first place (Jones) is absolutely worth playing. (I'd also add that Jones is generally more comfortable with the ball in his hands on the perimeter in the motion of the offense than Ward is, which was necessary tonight with how difficult Houston was making every single pass and dribble.)
There are times when a guard gets past or defenders and they stop the drive 15 feet out because there see Jones in the right spot. Everyone says Jones' effort and toughness are key, but his BB IQ is through the roof.

Not just Jones, but the look on the opponents face when they drive baseline and then remember the scouting report is priceless. "Oh ****, this is not where I want to be."

I will acknowledge your first sentence. The second has no meaning to me, although I understand it. Sampson is lucky to be back coaching at this level let alone, back in the Big 12.

It is not going to be easy for him in this league. Nor should it be.

Just calling a-club-a-club here, he was a coach that got caught doing recruiting violations. Many, many coaches have gone uncaught, I can assure you.

Now recruiting violations with coaches is going to be unheard of and less scrutinized by the NCAA.

Make no mistake, Kelvin is not my favorite coach, but he and his staff are terrific in-game coaches.

I'm not saying he isn't a good coach, he is. He is also a new conference rival and now an enemy. Once again.

Edit: He has paid his penalty. I can't remember exactly what that was, but he lost his job (Indiana was it?) and had to work his way back up.

Agree. He’s definitely not one of the coaches I particularly like. But he comes from the “old school” ranks, and is really a winner on the floor. Correct, he’s paid his penance. He’s one of those coaches that looks younger than what he really is. Without looking it up, he’s got to be pushing 70.

I hope he is not too much of a winner, but I know Houston will be a threat for the conference leadership, while he is there.

Maybe he will lose some of his refound luster here in the new Big 12?

They’ll still be upper echelon in our league. West Virginia’s Josh Eilart and Oklahoma State’s Mike Bontyon will struggle and be bottom feeders this year. This is make-or-break for Boynton, and surprised Pickens has given him this long of a lease on the program to be honest.

Really was a balanced team effort. Gilbert will get knocked but he locked down Cryer. That dude usually salivates when he sees Hilton on the schedule.

Absolutely, Gilbert gets WAY too much grief this year. Yes he can ball hog but he’s out there for a reason.
I think we will take the good with the bad with Gilbert. But we need him, and sometimes he can kick start the offense. Continue to play great D.

Play just a bit more under control much of the time, cut down the TO's. He is going to continue to improve with Big 12 experience and coaching also.

Yeah, Houston, after Sampson is gone? Agree. They have a pedigree and now are in a P4 conference.

He was busted for recruiting violations at both Oklahoma and then again at Indianna.

Following a controversial exit from Oklahoma and an even more controversial departure from Indiana, there was a time when many thought Sampson would never coach college basketball again, even when that five-year show-cause order ended.

Factual. Bounced around the NBA and done his penalty with NCAA. Calapari with Kentucky wasn’t no saint either, but is regarded as top-notch with coaching.

Thanks for that. I'd forgotten he did the same stuff at OU that got him fired at IU. The more I think about him, the less I like him. Those were the rules back then and he knowingly ignored them.

Agreed. OKST swept us last year and came into Hilton 2 years ago and held us to 36 freaking points. **** them Cowboys!
We really need to whip the Cowboys at home. No messing around this year. It's us or them. Who wants to have a really good season?

There were a lot of flashlights up there during Juicy Wiggle, so that’s why I wondered. Based off photos I was seeing 15 minutes prior to tip off, I was really surprised to see it so full.
It was just a late arriving crowd (to be expected), many people around us didn’t show up until end of first half. They did not TELL people to move down, but I think there was some of that going on. I estimated 10k people there once everyone showed, might be a tad high.
