Time for a Real Discussion About Caitlin Clark

Living in CR, it really isn't that hard to ignore it all. I don't watch the local news, don't listen to local radio except for 3:55pm on Thursday, and I can get everything else right on this site!

You guys just can't let this go? Did she beat some of your daughters in High School?

Yes there is hyperbole, kind of like Rocco already being a top 5 QB in the nation next year. Iowa/CC keep selling out arenas in other states even though nobody outside of Iowa even knows who she is?
To be fair, only one out state stadium was sold out. And that was only a 8,000 seat arena

Haha similar or better efficiency? Their career W/S aren’t even close. Sabrina shot over 4% better from 3 too.
Clark's true shooting percentage was higher every year except their sophomore years, and even her turnover percentage this season is lower than Ionescu's was her senior season (and the other years aren't too far off).

Win shares are a cumulative stat, so yes, Ionescu has more career win shares than Clark right now, but it likely won't be that way by the end of the season. In WS/40, Clark is better for her career and again better in every season except their sophomore years. Same thing with BPM.

For now. It’s not a great recipe for tournament success. If CC struggles in a tournament game, having CC keep shooting bricks likely will result in a loss
Nostradamus is in the house. Of course that is what will happen. That isn’t a huge reach.

Clark is an amazing women's basketball player, but I just can't take this type of hyperbole. Tiger and MJ are global superstars. Hassel makes his point by saying his stepdad is watching women's basketball. Well, yeah, they are Iowa fans. The brains in that fanbase are so warped by Iowa media. Clark is a national superstar, who is bringing a lot of eyeballs to the women's game. But Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan?! Arguably the two biggest sports stars ever? Give me a freakin' break.

Are people forgetting Diana Taurasi? Nobody here is saying CC isn’t a great player, because she is. But putting her on a huge pedestal to basically proclaim she’s the best women’s player ever, being compared to MJ and TW is ridiculous. She hasn’t accomplished really anything yet. Taurasi has won many, many championships. Diana more closely MJ/TW than any other women’s basketball player. Maya Moore was on the same trajectory, but she found a different life calling at the peak of her professional career

How many more triple doubles does Sabrina have in her career cut short by Covid?

Great. So instead of preparing the team for that situation if it occurs, they let CC keep shooting bricks. She has had 4 off nights in 16 games… one in four. There are 6 games to win the tournament. Plus defenses will typically be tougher in the tournament. All of that means it’s very likely CC will have an off night at least once during the tournament. Seems to me preparing the team and learning how to play when CC is off her game would be appropriate, assuming Iowa wants to actually make a run in the tournament

I feel like you're stretching a bit if you're relying on that single statistic to declare Ionescu clearly better than Clark. Is Russell Westbrook better than Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson, or LeBron James?

(Also, just to note, Clark's freshman season also had fewer non-conference games due to Covid--23 regular season games vs. the 27 played her sophomore year and the 30+ regular season games that Ionescu had each year of her career. So if anything, Clark may finish her career with more of a game deficit from factors out of her control, which will depress some of those counting/milestone stats a bit.)

Riding CC is Iowa’s best chance. Have to live and die with her and see how far she can take you. Their isn’t a trade deadline or free agency. This is the team for better or worse at this point. Iowa could get bounced in the second round or make it to the final four. I doubt they can make it back to the title or win it this year. It is what it is.

Game here in Mpls against the Gophers is sold out and the game isn't until Feb. 28. First Gopher sellout since 2018, Lindsay Whalen's first game as coach was the draw for that one. Weeknight game so it ain't Hawk fans driving up from Iowa. It is a good WBB town, HS is popular and the Lynx draw well

I would have tried to scrounge up a ticket but will be out of town that week. Hopefully my local gals can do better than they did in IC. Mara Braun and company did a faceplant in that game.

So since CC averages a poor game in 1 in every 4 games, we should expect Iowa to not make a deep run in the tournament. Good to know when it’s time to fill out the bracket

Hassel is a national sports personality, not a random fan. He tweeted that last night.

Iowa fans are completely delusional when it comes to her national standing. Get out of your bubble.

Maybe, maybe not. Beauty of the tournament. Been this way for a long time.

The thing is he's not even talking about her play. He's talking about her star power. And his evidence is that an Iowa fan is now watching Iowa women's basketball.

Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan were global phenomenons. Literally the biggest sports stars of all time. And Hassel is without the slightest hint of sarcasm stating she is on their level. Iowa fans need to get a grip and leave Johnson County.

Imagine if Taurasi or Ionescu had NIL. We could see them doing State Farm, attending Chiefs games, or every single time I walk into Hy Vee.

I personally wouldn’t bet them to go to the final 4. Historically, championship level teams have more than 1 great player. It only takes one bad game to get knocked out. Beauty of the tournament. Been that way for a long time

A triple double in college basketball is not a single statistic haha. Clark is great and the best player in college women’s basketball today. She’s not a generational player, that’s just silly.
