Time for a Real Discussion About Caitlin Clark

Was trying to stay out of it but I’ve had a few drinks, so what the hell

Our fans getting bent out of shape over every little thing she does is stupid

Hawk fans white knighting for her on here is stupid

Nuke the thread
Having an anti-Clark thread is a really bad look in my opinion. She’s a generational talent for women’s basketball…and I don’t watch but can’t really blame an Iowa or ESPn for capitalizing on that.

I also can’t say people would have always been impressed with my on-court or field demeanor in high school and college.

The generational talent thing is so stupid. There was a better version of her in 2020 in WBB it’s just nobody pays attention to the sport.

Clark is an amazing women's basketball player, but I just can't take this type of hyperbole. Tiger and MJ are global superstars. Hassel makes his point by saying his stepdad is watching women's basketball. Well, yeah, they are Iowa fans. The brains in that fanbase are so warped by Iowa media. Clark is a national superstar, who is bringing a lot of eyeballs to the women's game. But Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan?! Arguably the two biggest sports stars ever? Give me a freakin' break.

Iowa is a rival. She plays for Iowa. It's not rocket science. It's OK to not like or cheer for players who play for your rival.

Exactly. The girl from Oregon and what about all the past UCONN players. Difference with the UCONN players is they had so much talent, they didn't need one to carry the load every night.

That’s what I call the Kobe approach. The team is better off not having the star player keep shooting over and over on their bad nights. There are great players who recognize when it’s not their night and will then try to be a decoy of sorts to get better shots for their teammates. Keep chucking it up over and over isn’t good for the team.
Well they are 15-1 and ranked #4.

Look - I was good friends with a pretty elite women’s basketball player in college. I don’t know that she would have liked Caitlin as a person. That may have come down to whether they played in summer leagues or AAU ball together, but I can almost guarantee she would have clapped back on fans complaining about a lot of the things I’m seeing. She was very critical about double-standards for men and women, and that’s a lot of what I’m seeing.

The difference when it comes to ISU fans is that she plays for Iowa. If a men's player for Iowa acted like she does, he would be just as disliked by ISU fans. Hell, we have plenty of fans who are very vocal in their support for her and the Iowa team, which is gross to me, but whatever.

Her showboating antics don't bother me at all, and I don't think she's a bad teammate. But she's an entitled whiner on the court. That's undeniable.

But now they do, so I personally think there is something different there. I don’t have a problem with disagreeing about talent though. Most of the disgust seems to be dangerously close to gender bias though…along with the team she plays for. I just think it’s a bad look for our fanbase.

I don’t really want to get into a fight over this, but I’m confident this women’s player would see what is being pointed to as a double standard.

The people in Iowa do sure. Sabrina made national news all the time at Oregon and still nobody paid attention. Casual sports fans don’t care about WBB, just the way it is. Didn’t in 2020 and don’t now.

she isn't a Tiger or MJ ... no where close. When a 80 y/o mens sports fan from say.... AZ tunes in to watch Clark, then we can start talking about where she stands.

But an 80 y/o life long Iowa fan tuning in, now, isn't any big deal. I'm glad his dad is watching women's sport tho.

You guys just can't let this go? Did she beat some of your daughters in High School?

Yes there is hyperbole, kind of like Rocco already being a top 5 QB in the nation next year. Iowa/CC keep selling out arenas in other states even though nobody outside of Iowa even knows who she is?

I think a better comparison is she is the U of I’s fanbase’s MJ/Tiger woods.

According to Ducks coach Kelly Graves, in 2019 Ionescu had "a chance to be a Marcus Mariota, that level of player and an esteemed Oregon Duck when it's all said and done." He noted that attendance at Oregon women's games had dramatically increased during Ionescu's career at the school. In the season before she arrived, the average announced home attendance for the Ducks was 1,501. Her sophomore season saw an average attendance of over 4,200; it went up to over 7,100 in her junior season and over 10,000 in her senior season. Ionescu was also a significant draw when Oregon went on the road; for example, when the Ducks visited Washington during her junior season, the crowd for that game was 3,000 more than the Huskies drew two nights earlier against Oregon State.

Graves' remarks about Ionescu's future iconic status at Oregon proved to be prophetic. Shortly after the premature end of her senior season (caused by the COVID-19 pandemic), the university polled fans on social media, asking them to name the four Oregon alumni they would put on a notional Mount Rushmore for the university. According to a 2020 story in the university's web journal Around the O, more than 70 suggestions were provided, but the four top choices were Mariota, Steve Prefontaine, Phil Knight, and Ionescu.

She is the NCAA all-time leader in career triple-doubles and the only NCAA Division I basketball player to record 2,000 points, 1,000 assists, and 1,000 rebounds in a career.

She was a featured speaker at the memorial service for Kobe Bryant, who had become a close personal friend.

Basically everything that Ionescu did that is recorded in the box score, Clark also has also done except on higher volume while maintaining similar or better efficiency.

For now. It’s not a great recipe for tournament success. If CC struggles in a tournament game, having CC keep shooting bricks likely will result in a loss
