I live in Johnston, can confirm. Crab Rangoon Chicken Sandwich at Charlotte's is fire (I think they're down in Indianola too.)
Canes and Slim Chickens are actively bad. The breading is flavorless and mealy. Chick-Fil-A is a hair better, but still not great. Popeyes is just so far above all of them. Glad the Ankeny one’s opening.
I will say that Cane’s toast is good, and fries are above average in the sauce. Popeyes has incredible biscuits, but I agree that the rest of their sides are not good. I never even bother ordering a basket of anything, since I can’t finish just the chicken portion and would only throw the fries away.
If you don't like crinkle cut fries, coleslaw or Texas toast, Raisin Canes may not be the place for you.
We stopped there after the game, I had a sandwich it was excellent, the mac and cheese was awesome and I dont even like M/C that much.
I mean every one I go to has a double line around the building, if not also down the street to get it so I think they must be doing something right.

The couple times I had Chick fil et I wasnt impressed at all. I am not going to say they arent good because I have only had a couple things a couple times there, but what I did have was just ok. Slim Chickens is Ok I think Canes has better chicken fingers but Slims has more options and sides. Popeyes is decent too, although I have only been there I think 1 time so not a lot of experience there either. Hope to get Zaxbys sometime, just whenever I have had the chance had others along that wanted something else.
Its chicken fingers, its in the name, its all they do, and they are fast, If you go there expecting something else thats on you.
Still to this day the best Chicken fingers I have ever had have been Charley Biggs Chicken fingers that they have at a small mom and pop gas station In Lake Mills. If you are ever in Lake Mills do yourself a favor and stop in Don's Motor Mart and try them. Not sure I have ever heard a single person that doesnt like them.
Charley Biggs is a franchise and Don's also has Godfathers to go.

For the rest of us, there are far better places like Zaxby's, Popeyes, or Bojangles. Though sometimes you have to make sure you find a good one. There are a lot of bad locations of each of those chains.

I am a nondiscriminatory in my love of fried chicken. I can think of only a few times that I didnt like it, cheep breading or dry chicken is a way to disappoint me.
I like it if I specifically want fast food chicken strips, and I like their strips better than chick fil a's strips, but I agree there's better chicken out there.

Biscuits and red beans and rice are great. So is their blackened chicken
I like Cane's because the chicken is usually very moist and that is #1 in my book. Their sides are mediocre though.
I was excited to try Zaxby's but didn't like it all. Just one time so can't really 100% judge probably.
