Very, very interesting story to watch. Haven’t really thought through it yet, but the implications and precedent could potentially be huge.

Police are investigating the first case of rape in the metaverse after a child was 'attacked' in a virtual reality video game.

The girl under the age of 16 is said to have been left distraught after her avatar – her digital character – was gang raped by the online strangers.

The headset-wearing victim did not suffer any injuries as there was no physical attack.

But officers said she suffered the same psychological and emotional trauma as someone who has been raped in the real world as the 'VR' experience is designed to be completely immersive.

Just blame a child?

Reminds me of woman I met who complained because her husband was in federal prison because he was “tricked.” He thought he was asking a 12 year old girl for naked pictures and it was a sneaky old dude who was an FBI agent. She was looking for sympathy and I was like, good job FBI!

Not sure how I feel since most video games are of dudes killing other dudes. Yeah it’s twisted but does not seem like u can prosecute something like this
I stick to Mario, Minecraft, or iPhone games so I’m probably ignorant… but are there games where this could really happen? I know there are games like GTA and Sims that have very social features, but not familiar with them enough to know if they allow character sex, let alone gang rape.

I’m not sure how it works either. I’m just confused if your avatar is getting raped, why can’t u just hit the reset button or take your headphones off? Honestly I don’t play video games or do online gaming of any sort

I'm pretty skeptical there is any mainstream online multiplayer game that allows players to have graphic sex with other players who do not want to. Sounds like something that could happen eventually though unless they take steps against it.

What probably does happen is avatars are somehow restrained or surrounded by other players who then say and message all sorts of rape language to the person they're restraining in some way...which I'm sure can be psychologically very serious.

Yeah, I have some real questions about the logistics of this. I just don't understand why the capability to do something like this would even be programmed into the metaverse. Will be interesting to see how that plays out.

The legal questions are also interesting. How do yoy determine jurisdiction?

I haven't messed with it but I imagine there are rooms where characters can surround other characters and if you can message them in any way you could hurl some horrific stuff at someone who is being ganged up on.

Is that a crime at all or a crime on the same level as actual assault or rape? It's interesting and scary to think about when it's this early in all of this.

I'm clueless about the gaming world is there any reason you couldn't just log off or unplug your gaming system. Why would you submit yourself to being harassed?

Thats what I was thinking also. Like in real life you can't get out of that situation, you are attacked and raped and assaulted. You have emotional damage based on your being attacked and knowing that the person is still out there. It is a total nightmare for the person getting raped. Online it just seems like you shut it off. It's not the same as real life. Seems like normal people should quit playing games where this type of activity is going down.

I think using the terms rape or sexual assault with this kind of thing are way over the top IMO. Fairly certain you can't have any kind of sexual interaction whatsoever with these characters in meta. Definitely could be considered harassment, even sexual harrasment depending if explicit things were said to the kid, which is still very serious.

For me this is part of a disturbing trend in that a lot of peoples' most significant relationships are on line.

There is a rapidly growing app called Candy that is a virtual girlfriend that basically will tell (and show) you exactly what you want to hear (and see). I can see that creating very unrealistic and unhealthy expectations which will make a real relationship very difficult.

Call me a curmudgeon but the internet is not bringing people together as much as it makes them lonely and isolated.

WFH isn’t helping with that either. How many people met their SO through work or work functions. I did. If it wasn’t for this work acquaintance inviting me to a hot tub party on a Thursday night, I may have never met my wife.

Agreed, a lot of companies are starting to realize their employees are missing out on a lot of both formal and informal mentorships and collaboration among employees. It is very difficult to learn how to be a good manager/leader in a WFH setting.

A hot tub party on a Thursday night? Where the heck do you work??

Yeah, this is an interesting avenue and could open a can of worms. Unfortunately, cyber bullying is a huge problem at all levels and it's not easily controllable. They're going to have to get ahead of this too. I'm not in the gaming world so I don't quite understand it though. I never really upgraded from the nintendo systems beyond that where my friends did play a lot of Halo, COD, and Madden. I usually just played at their houses, but I wouldn't even know where to start with meta and the virtual world. As others have said, how could you sit there and endure that versus just shutting it off? There not a saved/unsaved feature that would just disregard that occurrence and they can report those people? You'd think there would be a report feature and that person could get them banned from playing said game. I also wasn't able to read the article since the filter at work isn't allowing me to.

I guess my thought on being a good manager is be flexible.

WFH is not the devil. WFH recognizes that people need some balance in life. If you hire good people, they will make it work.

All of my kids have flexibility on when and where they work. Four engineers and a scientist, sometimes you actually need to see a thing in person. But with rapid expansion of a company, there isn’t enough room for everyone to be there at once. Several of them have managers that always communicate on the phone or electronically because even if they are in plant, they aren’t even in the same building.

The son with long haul Covid was recognized by the president of his large company for his work in resolving a serious problem. Fortunately his manager recognized his value and trusted him to get his work done through days he couldn’t keep food down, was having heart palpitations, was too dizzy to drive, or had a battery of doctor’s appointments.

Also I am not a fan of trying to meet people to date at work, having been sexually harassed in the workplace. My sister was harassed worse than me, threatened with losing her job when she was poor and straight out of college. So if the excuse to make people go into the office is so they can find a date, I think that’s crazy.
