49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

I thought I'd read through the first few pages of this thread just to see what we all had to say. I was shocked that fatalistic and crabby fans were not really out in full force. I expected a lot of "sure he was good today, but he'll be bad soon enough" type of comments and there were very few of them. It gave me a nice feeling about CF ;). Almost everyone had the realistic expectation that Brock was earning himself a few years as a backup and how great that was. There were a few people (I don't know how serious they were) that were pretty insistent that we were seeing the start of something special. And I had to laugh at a few people who would make comments about how he was good, but everyone should pump the brakes and not act like he was a top QB in the NFL. I don't know that any of us thought he'd come back from a serious injury and probably be in the top 5 of MVP candidates the next year. It turns out he IS one of the best QBs in the NFL this year ;)

He probably will be for years to come too. Did you guys really see it coming? Or you were cautiously optimistic? Not knowing exactly what to expect.

Nope, most of us did not see this coming. I think we were all excited that it appeared he had earned himself a backup role (which is honestly probably one of the better jobs in sports). As I said in this thread there were a few posters who were talking things up after the first few games, but I'm not sure if they were super serious or just having a lot of fun with it. Honestly, based on our fans, I was surprised that everyone was as excited as they were and relatively optimistic about his future!

I keep saying it, but it is hard to describe how much fun this run has been for me. My family members are Vikings fans. But I don't think my Dad and sister owned a Vikings shirt. Both own 49er's shirts. My extended family members are fairly casual Iowa State fans and at Christmas they were rushing everyone through dinner so that they could turn on the game. I am better versed in the 49er's than I am in the Vikings and I can tell you all about Debo and BA and Trent Williams and Bosa. Hell, I have NEVER liked a Hawkeye and I find Kittle fun.

Nobody saw this coming and if they tell you they did they’re lying. We were just hoping he’d make the roster. Never dreamed he would be the starter much less play like this.

I’ve been a cowboys fan my whole life but I’m full on 49ers as long as Brock is there. You can also bet your ass I was cheering for Brock when they were stomping the life out of the cowboys.

I’ve never understood the argument that QB A beat QB B’s team so he’s better. QB B wasn’t out there playing defense. It’s a weird argument I’ve heard since at least Brady v Manning in the 00’s.

I understand if a guy can’t win the big game (Marino). But head to head is silly if that’s the only criteria.

Edit: typo

By that same token though Marino never had a defense good enough to win. It was all offense and offense carry the team with that Dolphins team. Too much pressure and not a balanced team. In a sense he "didn't really choke." Just got as far as ONLY OFFENSE can get you.

Yeah it's a TEAM game and the best TEAM will always have some big advantages.

He's a great young QB and yes we have a chance at the Super Bowl win. He can probably be our QB for 15 years. So he will have some chances. But we have a great chance this year. So lets go get it.

:)
I’m a huge believer in getting it done when you can. Purdy could be great for the next 15 years and the 49ers may never have a better chance than this year because you don’t know how things will play out with the roster. For instance, I’m a big Cubs fan and I’m glad they won in 2016. I thought they would play in multiple World Series with that young roster but it didn’t pan out.

SIAP but just came across this list of active QBs and their scores. Interesting list.

What a useless "article". Not knocking you for posting it, I'm knocking Yahoo and their "writer" for creating it. It's a 39 page long list of the current QBR ratings with a bunch of pictures, photo credits and one stat for each - the QBR...plus a brief blurb about Dak Prescott.

All of that for what should have been a 32 line grid of names and numbers. It's this in excruciatingly long form.

Of course they should try to win it this year. But strange things happen. I remember a year where they had a chance to go to the Super Bowl and Kyle Williams dropped 2 punts in the NFC Championship game. Giving the Giants the ball around the 10 yard line or so. That was in the Jim Harbaugh coaching era. Sometimes you look like the best team and strange things happen. This team should be able to make it through the NFC. With cleaner play and less turnovers I think they can compete with the Ravens or whoever in the Super Bowl.

On the roster it's not perfect and there are some injuries. But it's no doubt one of the best rosters in football. I'm sure most teams would rather have this roster than their own.

Gotta keep those interns busy.

Pretty sure I was/am in the camp that said he would or is playing himself into a solid backup role for the foreseeable future. Which, that would be a nice payday had he last through the rookie contract. They could even get what is it now, $15-20M? It is crazy to fathom that he would/should see $40-45M/year and a strong possibility as had played in the superbowl (knock on wood). It's hard for me to not envision a Baltimore/San Fran superbowl right now. The only other strong team I see are the Browns and maybe the Lions when they want to show up.

I am a packers fan. While each game I am slowly enjoying the growth and process of Jordan Love and his young corp of WRS, I am constantly finding myself liking and following certain posters on FB/X/Gram of 9er content. It's fun seeing Brock succeed, as well as the other cyclones too. Never thought I'd see the day where I was cheering on the success of the 9ers.
