Liberty Bowl postgame thread

The basketball game is a regular season game that counts towards making the postseason, the bowl game is played a month after the regular season, where players sit out or transfer beforehand because it's an exhibition, and you get nothing competition-wise for winning.
that's what we need...a Memphis vs Iowa State basketball series. you guys will love FedExForum and we need a visit to Hilton.

Let's see, Georgia or Auburn, I will take my chances with Auburn, thank you very much.
Me too. My point was that I wish Iowa State played Auburn instead of Memphis. If they had, ISU would have another trophy and be 8-5!

I believe Memphis was the tougher draw, yesterday. Memphis could have beaten quite a few P5 teams on 12/29/23.

Not trying to make excuses. We didn't play our best. They played very well.

Yes, Memphis was definitely a tougher draw than Auburn would have been! I wanted ISU to play and beat Auburn, because it would have been easier for ISU to do than beating Memphis, and it would have annoyed my brother and sister (both Auburn fans) to no end.

People say that losing a game like that doesn't matter, fine whatever.

But CW will tell you what happens to traffic on this site when ISU isn't doing well, and I bet Blum's life is harder today than it would have been if the game had turned out another way.

What is the Alabama v Auburn rivalry like? Civil, crazy? Does one fan base circle the stars of entitlement, the other more working class?

Give us a 'Bamas fans take.

from my seat at the game Memphis wanted to be there, ISU not so much. The ISU fans were great as always but the players kinda had a 'oh this again?' attitude on the field.

It was a fun but cold day and good luck next season.
Congrats to you and Memphis. Memphis was the better team yesterday.

Good luck next year to you also. You should be pretty good again.

LOL. When I get on a bowl committee I'm sending Memphis to the Fenway bowl in Boston to face a 10-win Boston College with a high temp of 36 and the only tourist attractions open will be some overrated BBQ joints.
Or just send them to the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. :)

KU plays in a high school stadium, and they have way more money than ISU. You know why they have way more money than ISU? It ain't from football. If Cambell stays at ISU and we get 5-8 wins every year, that's ok, because that is about all ISU can afford. We will get plenty of football money just from being in the Big 12 (and we are not going to get kicked out if we aren't really good in football). Where is the money going to come from to try and compete with the Texas teams, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Okie State and the Arizonas in football? It isn't there. We need to lean heavy on basketball.
This just isn’t true. KU football brings in more revenue and profit than KU basketball. KU basketball ran a deficit in 2021. This is all public record.

Well, you literally choose one or the other when you are kid for whatever reason you have. In my case, my folks went to Alabama and we had season tickets. I had a stuffed elephant in my crib when I was a baby, and I do not remember a time when I was not an Alabama fan. I listened to my first game on the radio (1970 Iron Bowl loss to Auburn with Pat Sullivan), and I went to my first game in person (1971 win vs. Southern Miss with Ray Guy) and LOVED IT! However, my paternal Grandfather went to Auburn Vet School, which clouded the judgement of my *younger* brother and my *older* sister. All of us graduated from college, but none of us went to Alabama or Auburn. My brother and sister both went to private schools without a football team, and I went to Iowa State.

As for the fans in general, the dynamic is like in Iowa with Alabama fans being more like Iowa fans (entitled, arrogant, etc.), and Auburn fans being more like Iowa State fans (more closely affiliated with the school for a larger percentage of the fan base and FOREVER TRUE). There are more bandwagon Alabama fans than bandwagon Auburn fans just like there are more bandwagon Hawkeye fans than bandwagon Cyclone fans. All I can say for myself is that while I was born and raised an Alabama fan when Bryant was the Head Coach, I was searching for something else.

As fate would have it, I met a cute girl at a High School Game who had moved from Iowa, and I asked if she was an Iowa or an Iowa State fan. She said: Go Cyclones! I have been an ISU fan ever since. We went to the school dance after the game (every time I hear Hot Blooded by Foreigner I think of her). Then, that season (1978), Iowa State played in the Hall of Fame Classic @ Legion Field, so I went to the game, rooted for ISU and have followed them ever since that time.

Fast forward in life, and I landed at Iowa State after serving in the Army even though I had only been in state twice and had never been to campus. Had another brother living in Des Moines at the time, so I applied to ISU, and the rest is history. Best decision I ever made. I love Iowa State University with every fiber in my being, and I am an Alabama football fan out of habit. A bad habit. Like being hooked on heroin bad. I try to break away, and the fans get on my nerves if I talk to one for more than 5 minutes, but I still like watching them play. It all gets back to the stuffed elephant as a kid. :)

As for Alabama and Auburn fans in general, they are ALL CRAZY! They take football way too seriously. The ones who attended either school are more balanced than the ones who grew up as fans of one or the other but didn't go to college. Auburn fans are generally nice people UNLESS you talk to them about Alabama. Then, they get all riled up. That game is literally the most important game to them (especially @ Jordan-Hare). They use VooDoo dolls and cast spells on the Tide. Does not matter how good Alabama is, they struggle @ Auburn. Meanwhile, Alabama fans just don't want to lose to Auburn and mess up a Championship season. Tide fans also love to talk about how many championships "THEY" have won. They really personalize that more than most. One of the reasons, I do not say "WE" when talking about ISU, even though I am a graduate.

In general, they are both fantastic places to go see a game. If you have not been, I would suggest going to a game at both places and have a good time.

Hope that helps. I know I rambled a bit.

Let's Go State! and Roll Tide!

Thank you for the detailed thoughts on the rivalry and of the two schools! That was awesome. You didn't seem like you were rambling to me. I enjoyed your opinion and value it because you were there, grew up there, relatives, etc.

It's also very interesting how you wound up at Iowa State! Thank you for you service in the Army as well!! I was in the Navy myself, and Naval reserve while working on my degree at ISU.

I ran across this song. Your story about the Alabama fans, crazy, and your high school dance sort of reminded me of it. Have a great night!

It's a September game. we will win 14-7 or lose because we are establishing "culture" for the season.
You had to remind us of this, huh? Haha

But we won't be young next year, is what I'm hearing. I thought we ere always 'young'!

Now that you've brought it up, this is an area I'd like to see our team improve at. We need to be better in some of the early season matchups. Of course, Campbell needs to get the Iowa "monkey" off his back one of these years.

3rd down (as well as other downs), we rush 3 guys. They are stacked near each other like other downs presumedly to stop the run even though some 3rd downs are longer for obvious passing. QB has all day to throw as our 3 guys are squished together by the OL creating a traffic jam. Then when this amoeba rush finally gets near the QB, the QB rolls slowly to the right creating more time. Our DE's are so unathletic that they cannot adjust and can only watch. There isn't a linebacker in sight either as they are in coverage. The result: 1st down completion.

Need more athletic DE's and outside linebackers.
Did people not notice that we had orange at end for a good chunk of the game? No way he is chasing down QBs.
