Liberty Bowl postgame thread

Meh. Just an exhibition. I mean…guy didn’t even play. Not a big deal. We also didn’t have a single rushing yard. No worries there either because…you guessed it…exhibition. Be a good lad and rest easy, for this was merely good sport old chap.

That's the ticket!

Not a good game today by the Cyclones. Let's look to the future and assess what is needed. We need new OL talent and a RB through the portal. We also need more talent and athletes on Defense.

I also think Campbell should be officially on the hot seat going into this year. I am sorry to say that, but he has a poor history against Iowa, bad play calling, did not build on the Fiesta Bowl victory, and poor history against lower class teams.
Let's be honest overall. Many folks on this thread have stated similar things. We need to be aggressive with portal signings going into next year!

I just don't understand how you can contend in most conference games while looking so bad and underprepared in non-conference games...
  • 2-4 in bowl games
  • 1-7 against Iowa
  • Home losses to mid major programs
  • Road loss at Ohio
Also, for a coach that PREACHES margins, we have to be one of the worst teams in the country over the past 8 seasons in key situations.. His stubbornness with playing phone booth football is going to give us all an aneurism..

A coach with an overall winning record and this many conference winning records at ISU isn't going to be on the hot seat.

We also tied Texas for the most conference road victories this year with 4, won again in Manhattan for the 2nd time in a row after not winning there since 2004.

The most frustrating part of ISU football looking ahead is the opportunity to take that next step has never been easier.. We are equal peers to EVERYONE in the conference for the first time maybe ever, but what confidence does anyone have in:
  • Winning September football games
  • Winning in the margins
  • Having a respectable offensive line

They were 3-0 last year in non-conference.

Exactly, how do you beat K-state, OSU, and hang with Texas while also looking like a D2 school at the line of scrimmage against mid major programs??

Obviously the coaches are good enough to hang with CFP teams, but why the regression against lower competition? Why does it always take our defense 1-2 quarters before they make adjustments when the original plan isn't working? Why does the offense constantly gameplan for phone booth football when your QB and WR's ball out?

This isn't a 2023 thing either, this has been like this since 2016? The inconsistency is mind boggling

So CMC eithers wins all the non-con games or has a strong conference season? Can't have a 5 or 6 win conference season AND win the non-con games?

Seriously, if the Cy-Hawk game goes away, what confidence do fans have that the 3rd buy game would be a win? History says we should hope for 10 conference games before buying a game we end up shi*ting the bed and losing to a MAC school

Bolded: apparently not.

Fwiw ISU is usually 2-1 non-conference.

Fundamentals play into losing to Iowa.

Idk, every game is different, Tulane beat USC in a bowl game last year. The things you are pointing out seem like characteristics of a team that went 7-6.

Yep

Have we looked better coached or more talented than the 2017 squad?

Perhaps 2020, although we **** ourselves against ULL and got fortunate with Covid

Looking back, the things that kept 2017 from being a true breakthrough have been present every season

Rocco, Brammer, Noel, and Higgins are enough weapons alone to make this offense top 1/3 in the Big 12 next season. It's time to go move more towards the air raid and away from the phone booth.. Not saying we have to be Leach Texas Tech levels, but Rocco throwing it 40+ times a game should be the minimum.

Rocco is an incredible passer but limited runner, so can we drop the stupid RPO looks where there is NO threat to have the QB run?? I'd also LOVE to see Scheelhause study the RB screen game this off-season.. If the o-line is going to stink, at least make the d-line second guess themselves with a lot of screens..
