Unless you pay another $3 a month.

From email I just received:

"
Dear Prime member,

We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience. Starting January 29, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month* that you can sign up for here.

"All the boys upstairs want to see,
How much you'll pay for what you used to get for free."

Tom Petty nailed it.
Except it ain't free.

Reminds an old timer like me of cable. When it started it cost, but THERE ARE NO COMMERCIALS!!!.

So then they started adding commercials while OTA started adding even more commercials.

Now premium streaming had no commercials. And now they're adding commercials.

Devo was right. Mankind keeps devolving.

If you like older movies there are already a lot of totally free streaming services that have ads, a few that don't.

A few of them actually have equal or better selection of older movies than some of the pay services.

If you like critically acclaimed older movies, Kanopy has by far the best selection of any streaming service for free with no ads. You just need a library card.

There was a brief period where the streamers made the product, price and convenience a better value than "high seas" for most people but I think it's probably past now.
I gave it up for a long time for that exact reason. But it has definitely become worthwhile again.

I currently get ads when watching Prime video. For example, I'm re-watching Schitt's Creek and I get around 3 minutes of ads per episode.

Have I been doing something wrong?

Yeah, in any given month the selection of older movies on Tubi is as good or better than HBO Max and Prime, almost always better than Netflix, Paramount+ and Hulu who I think really have a crap collection of old movies most of the time. More variety than Disney+ but for certain families or nerds I'm sure D+ is great.

I notice Tubi cycles through the selection way faster which can be good or bad depending on the user.

Crackle wasn't bad when it first came out but has gotten a lot worse. Roku Channel has some surprisingly good movies sometimes. I always just use the "Justwatch" site and I'm surprised how often the movie I want to watch is on a totally free legal streamer, especially if I include Kanopy.

I think on their original shows like The Boys or Fleabottom there has never been ads and now there will be.

They've already been sprinkling in "free with ads" shows and movies for a few years.

I'm a big X-Files fan and the remastered series has been free with ads on there for a couple years now. It was included with no ads for years, then went away two years, then back with ads. It's always a decision for me if I want to break out the DVDs or stream it with ads in HD.

I watched a boat load of movies between August and December due to health reasons. I queued up so many bad movies on Tubi as it's a lot easier to watch bad movies when you're in a zombie like state and don't really want to think.

Yeah when I had knee surgery and was on pain killers I thought I was going to read all these books in that down time...ah no. It was really low brow TV and hoping it put me to sleep.

I actually don't mind ads. I often get up and do stuff around the house during, so no skin off my back. I've even gone to accepting ads on HBO Max and some other services just to save a few bucks.

The ads on HBO Max aren't that bad at all. The ads on Disney+ are far too frequent, too long and too repetitive.

I only get D+ one or two months a year but I really regretted getting the ad version last time because of how repetitive and frequent they were. I'll either get no ads or just rarely get it going forward.
