49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

I see this situation as very similar to what just happened with the college football playoff. The committee and media went in with a the foregone conclusion that the SEC would have a school in. But when Bama beat Georgia, UT won at Bama, and three other power 5 champs went undefeated, it put them in a position where their predetermined outcome didn't make sense. They refused to accept this. Then we were treated to an onslaught of twisted logic to back into the outcome they needed.

Now in the NFL, the predetermined conclusion is that the MVP is going to go to the best QB among the top teams in the league. Back in August that was going to be Mahomes or Allen or Rodgers or Hurts. One of the more established stars. Now it looks like SF may be the best team in the league and Purdy has all the top QB stats. But handing the MVP to Mr Irrelevent from little old Iowa State just shows that a bunch of NFL scouts and so called media experts had a huge miss. They don't want to own that, so queue the twisted logic to make a case to give this award to anyone else.
Very true. Just for fun, I looked back at previous NFL MVP winners to see what position they played. Since 1980, there have been:

34 Quarterbacks
9 Running Backs
1 Linebacker
1 Placekicker

(Note: some years had multiple winners). I doubt we will ever see another placekicker win the award

There are a lot of 49ers fans around the country because they had a big run there in the 80's and 90's. . . . They also have cool uniforms. The red and gold just looks really good.

Trivia question: From whence did the 49ers adopt their colors?

The old story around our parts is that when Iowa State played on the coast (at California, September 1963) someone saw Iowa State's Cardinal and Gold uniforms and voila!

Is this true, do you know?

Hayden Fry (I spit on the sidewalk) in 1979 adopted the Steelers' Black and Gold uniforms, and that school (I spit . . .) wears them to this day.

Sure wish we would wear unis like the 49ers. We would do you proud. This fall we have the 4th youngest team among FBS schools, 19 starters and 18 backups return for 2024.

Anyone here want to Photoshop our logo on Brock's 49er helmet, just for the fun of it?

There are a lot of 49ers fans around the country because they had a big run there in the 80's and 90's. So if people were growing up at that time a lot were 49ers fans. Because kids often like the real good team and follow it. They also have cool uniforms. The red and gold just looks really good. Compared to say the Browns who have an ugly uniform. Yes kids really choose teams like this.

The Cowboys always marketed like Americas team and would go into places next door like New Mexico. Who didn't have a team and said Dallas and TX teams are your team. Then they expanded it out to many other states. The built a big following. That was actually a goal of one of the previous owners. Not sure about Jerry Jones. But they used to market that way on purpose under a prior owner. Probably for merchandise sales. They just wanted to build a bigger following and it worked.

Smokin’ hot cheerleaders helped too back in the 70s and 80s. I think that helped the Cowboys brand as much as the football team.

Grew up as a "Monsters of the Midway" fan and then a Steelers fan for the AFC. I'm a Purdy fan and so-so as a Niner fan, but as long as Brock is there I will follow them.

How were the Niners doing in the NFC championship game before Brock hurt his elbow? How did they do after?

They had gained 24 yards on 6 plays before Brock got hurt. Johnson had actually led them to the tying TD early in the 2nd. Defense gave up a long TD drive, then the wheels fell off. Gained like 60 yds the rest of the game and had two fumbles.

That's all that matters right?

This nonsense about the strength of the 9ers supporting cast discrediting Purdy for MVP is such an insane double standard.

Look at Mahomes in KC this year. He is widely regarded as one of the best to ever play the position. But this year he has a crappy receiver group and some issues on the o line. And as a result, he has put up more mediocre numbers. Nobody wrote him off in his prior MVP years because he was throwing to Tyreek and Kelce in his prime and playing for an offensive genius coach in Andy.

Flip it around with the Jets. Coming in to the season everyone thought they were a contender. Rodgers goes down and they aren't even a playoff team. Doesn't matter how good the rest of the roster is if you have no QB.

Elite teams need QB play, talent around the rest of the roster, and good coaching. MVPs end up being selected from the top teams. Why is that standard any different here?

It has now moved on to Brock vs. Lamar.

Todd McShay was on the Ryen Russillo podcast on Monday and said “if you put Brock Purdy on the Patriots they would still be terrible but if you put Lamar on the Patriots they’d be a playoff team.”

Based on…..?
