AP news has an article about what college football coaches are saying about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ in NIL. The UCONN coach said it best. If our fans want us to beat the teams on our schedule, they need to put money in our NIL so we can get and keep our players, if you don’t you aren’t entitled to b$$chwhen we lose.

He’s right to some extent. It still sucks that regular fans have to foot the bill with the astounding TV money flowing to the conferences. And we all pay for the TV money!

The cost of being a fan increases every year. Multiple streaming service packages to watch our teams. Cotton sweatshirts that cost $80 because the school logo and the Nike swoosh is on it. Ticket price increases. NIL stuff.

Fwiw, I donate monthly to WeWill. I believe in them and I love our Cyclone players than need the assistance. But the system is frustrating.

P5 institutions and the NCAA have pulled a massive con by building an empire on the backs of their non-compensated workforce to generate billions of dollars. Now they’ve shifted the burden on the common fan. Split the TV revenues and give the players their share.

I believe this to be so true.

I am torn on how I want it to go from here.

I recognize that we cannot back to the way it was but I am not sure if the likely scenario where the schools are allowed to pay players is best for ISU. I see that the "haves" (i.e. Big10 and SEC) will be able to pay the players AND have big NIL budgets. Because they get more revenue - they can pay more for players. I see our gap widening.

If things stayed the same as they are now, we will never be the biggest NIL, but I can see where some rich SEC and Big10 NIL donors get tired of paying big money for third place in their conference which makes the NIL gap between us and them less.

Lol, "it's your fault when we go 2-10 instead of 3-9 every year so dont complain ".

This whole thing is a total scam and I can't believe people are giving up their hard earned money for this stuff.

That's a dumb take in my opinion. The money is there. These institutions make 100 mil a year in athletic revenue. Where does all that money go? Huge salaries to coaches, crazy facilities, unlimited admins.

Ever since colleges were allowed to negotiate tv contracts all of this has grown exponentially. I think its super fair for these kids to ask for a piece of this. And I don't think it all has to come at the expense of us fans. That 100 mil was made off our dollars already. Between tickets to games, tv subscriptions./ESPN +, merchandise, etc. fans spend a lot. I don't see why we are the ones forced to cover the bill for these kids.

I feel the same way when millionaire movie stars and musicians plead for regular middle class people to donate to all their charities.

Maalik Murphy (Texas backup QB) is now in the portal. The guy is a physical specimen with an arm cannon. It will be interesting where he ends up. Most chatter I've seen suggests Auburn or LSU, which makes sense.

Reports that he would rather have stayed with his team through the postseason, but had to enter the portal to make the deadline.

Apparently nobody told him that if you're in a bowl game/CFP, you get a 5-day window after that game to enter the portal.

We have to play ball to keep ISU somewhat relevant until things change. Either you understand that and donate or you don't care if we only win 3 games a year in football and all of our basketball players leave after a successful year.

I think it's BS too, but I still donate until the lawsuits come through requiring the athletes to be paid by the University.

And if you listen to Williams and Blum, Brent said if we didn't increase our donations to what they are now compared to last year, almost all of our best players would be gone.

Yep. Play the game or die. Those are the options

The problem is other QBs in the portal will have a month head start in the transfer process, and by waiting until after the bowl game, there may not be as many options. Maybe they should open the transfer portal the day after the CFP championship.

That would make sense from an athletic standpoint, but it's likely not workable from an academics standpoint, assuming players want to be at their new school for the spring semester. The CFP final is Jan 8th this year, and first day of Spring Semester starts Jan 16th (at ISU, anyway). In that week, players would have to announce they were entering the portal, schedule and take visits, figure out NIL deals, pick a school/team, get enrolled in classes and move. That would be a nuts schedule that's practically impossible for everyone involved.

IMO, it is what it is. Maybe they could start the season earlier, but that would mean games start before classes for the fall semester. They could cut down the regular season, but that means less football. They could move up the Bowls and CFP, but unless they move off of New Years day as a big day for college football, they're really only getting another week for the portal to be open.

I appreciate and understand your feelings.
The reality is what the UConn coach said. The money is not there just to redistribute.
Welcome to an unregulated free market system.
I do not like it either, because our money gun is smaller than much of our competition. Less TV money and far, far less donor financial support. TAM just paid a coach $76M to leave. That would bankrupt us. I would guess a donor or two bought him out.
I doubt things improve. Those with the big $ will become even more dominant. We have great leadership at WEWILL. They work very hard to keep us in the game. It is important that we have some coaches that can compensate for our $ shortfall through relationships and culture. I am not being fatalistic, just realistic. We have proven we can compete - the hill we climb is just getting steeper and steeper. Go clones!
