Federal Judge Temporarily Strikes Down NCAA Transfer Restrictions

Huge news! This means an athlete can transfer as many times they want without having to sit out.

This thread sheds more light on what's going on:

I've said this since USCLA decided to join the big 10: The college sports landscape will be vastly different in 10-15 years. But I think I may had over estimated how long it would take

So if the NCAA can’t enforce transfer restrictions, what’s to prevent the CFP schools from recruiting tranfers to play on Jan 1st?
Or a TCU offering Will McDonald last year after our season was done a chunk of money to switch over and help them win a natty? The semester is over so he can say he is transferring and then transfer back when second semester starts.

I get that the NCAA has to allow it due to the TRO, but I don't get how eligibility and having to sit out is a violation of AntiTrust. It's not preventing any athlete from earning off of their Name, Image, or Likeness, and eligibility is one of the few things that NCAA can have control over.

Likewise, wouldn't this apply to all NCAA suspensions? If you can't force players to sit out because of transfer rules, why could you suspend them for PEDs, or gambling or grades? That would also be anti trust at that point

Will player jersey sales drop? Hard to tell who will be around multiple years & make connections with players, like Purdy, Baing, etc

I was surprised that we didn't lose more in the FB portal.

I'm beginning to wonder if the portal is overhyped if you are some where you like getting a education you want along with some cash why change. It's like most people get a ways in their career and decide this is probably where I'm going to stay.

If an NIL contract is dependent on "on field performance", then the NCAA preventing that performance could be considered interference with a contract.

I think Campbell has developed a culture that is based on things that make the portal less of a problem. Always seems like a group that is more like a family and that emphasizes valuing the team over self. I think We Will fits in perfectly with that.

That's not to say that certain players that aren't going to see the field as much aren't going to leave, and that's not casting blame on them if they do. It's just somewhat unusual for a player who will play a key role to leave here.

If the NCAA and its members could have all gotten on the same page 10 years ago, they wouldn't be subject to the whims of the court on a constant basis but ineffectual leadership, a Division I that's way too big and a complete lack of foresight have gotten us to right where the NCAA deserves to be.

I don’t understand how a coach has to pay a buyout but a player has no repercussions to leave. Can someone explain to me how it’s different?

Maybe they need have fully guaranteed 4 year scholarships (if it hasn’t been already instituted) and then put non-compete or buyout clauses in their scholarships to help reign in the wild west.

Coaches are on a contract. Players aren't. They're on annually renewed scholarships. NCAA and member schools have gone out of their way to make it clear that athletes are students and not employees. If they want to change that stance, to allow athletes to be paid as employees, then schools can try to add restrictions in the contracts. But not every school may want to do that.

I said this in a different thread but I think its worse then that. As soon as your semester ends you can "transfer" and enroll. ISU ends on the 15th of December so if a team wants to pick up a player he would be eligible right away at any date after that. That's how it works in basketball.. Tre was eligible right after our first semester ended.

So really all bowl games and the entire playoff teams can start recruiting for. Its going to be a mess! Unless the move the season up and start to play all games before fall semester ends I don't see how this isn't going to be a disaster.
