Abu Sama Season Highlight Reel

The snow game against K State will be legendary for a long while, but his game against BYU I think was a better showing of his elite abilities.

Two of the highlight runs were big cut backs, but each was a bit different.
The run at 50 seconds he sees the weak side end get too far upfield so he cuts back, but not all the way out the backdoor because a friendly blocker had slipped and took away his ideal angle. Instead he jukes the 2nd level and trucks the 3rd level.
Then at 1:09 is the TD finisher on the next play. One of the smoothest inside-the-cutback-lane jukes you'll see. The TV commentary drops the Barry Sanders comp.

1:26 he does his impression of a Breece Bait. Presses the hole, waits for the defenders to commit, and bounces it to the sideline. Add in the elite speed and you get it stretched all the way for the touchdown.

Yabba Dabba Doo! Yahoo, Abu!

"In the original script for The Flintstone Flyer, Fred was only supposed to say "Yahoo!!", but Alan Reed, who was Fred's voice actor, did not feel right just saying that, so instead he said, "Yabba-dabba-doo!", which was a play on the popular slogan "A lil' dab'll do ya."

I could be dating myself.

Dude is a stud, guessing he’ll be playing on Sundays after next season

He will definitely be playing in the NFL. I think he has a similar ceiling as Breece Hall, meaning he might be a 2nd day (at the latest) pick when he goes pro (assuming health).

The sample size was small, but he displayed vision, speed, toughness, and hands this year. The catch in the flat against KSU will be something that sticks on his career tape/film. If you can catch a tough pass like that, at speed, in the snow, and immediately get up field you will have a very long NFL career.

Sama is even shiftier than Breece.. it’s really, really impressive to see him avoid contact inside a phone booth. I think Breece was a little bit faster, though.

He also is a true freshman; if he puts on some weight and can prove his durability, he can be a Breece or Bijan type (bell cow, late first early second round type guy).

He is legit, hard to believe these are just his true freshman highlights. Most backs do not accumulate that many highlights in four-years. Glad he is ours and can't wait for what he does next.

"Wow! Abu Samu channeling Barry Sanders in the open field."
"Did we key that on up? Hello, how do you do!"
"Pickin' 'em up and puttin' 'em down. How many more can Abu do?"
That annoucer's attempt to be clever almost makes me want to watch highlights from that game muted. Better still would be to use the radio call with John and Eric.

The comparison to Barry on the cuts v. BYU were pretty accurate. Now the Walter comparisons v. KSt were far fetched.

Not saying he can't put on a little (good) weight but I don't see that as being his primary issue.

What will probably help him the most is having a full season under his belt and having a full offseason knowing what he needs to work on. The S and C staff can work on any strength imbalances that increase the likelihood of nagging injuries (this is often where hamstring issues come from).

In watching him run he doesn't need to be any stronger. He's already powerful, runs through tackles, and is tough to bring down. If we could ever get a competent offensive line together this team should run more screens with Sama. As we've seen he has excellent hands and often makes a great first move after catching a pass.

The last the we want him doing is putting on weight that sacrifices speed. His speed and shiftiness are his biggest assets (along with his hands).
