Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

Iowa desperately needs someone who can get inside the defense and get them out of position. Bowen looked like he could be that, but I'm not sure he would do as well if we had focused on stopping him. You really need at least a couple options like that on the floor at any given time, or you end up just passing around the arc and then taking a contested jump shot.

I also thought Krikke would be more of a factor going in, as I have been impressed with him offensively, but the double teams seemed to bother him, and I don't think he's used to having guys his size or bigger being able to guard him wherever he goes.
Agreed I couldn't believe fran started Dix. His first start is against a defense like Iowa State's at Hilton. Very foolish imo.

Krikle has been mostly good offensively. Iowa State really took him away. My problem with him is he gives up just as many as he scores.

I loved the second intentional foul call. It will never happen but I would love intentional fouls to start being called 100% by the book. Drives me nuts when at the end of a game the trailing team can force the leading team into having no way of scoring other than by free throws. Fouls are supposed to be from good offense/bad defense, they aren't supposed to be a defensive strategy.

I can't imagine the state of Iowa basketball right now if

1. They wouldn't have gotten Garza to go to psycho mode off-season and become the player he did and staying the extra year, along with getting the Murray twins, who were not really recruited by many, to turn out as high-level players. Fran seems to just fall into that and still hasn't been to the sweet 16 and will probably become the highest winning coach in Iowa history.

2. if Catlin Clark wasn't there to give them a warm fuzzy feeling.

I think TJ got pissed about the full court press when he took out the starters and put Lipsey back in to keep that score where it belonged.
But that is a move trademarked by Fran. He does that all the time. Press the other team's subs, get some steals and dunks. Final score not as bad a loss as it really was. TJ not having it. Can't blame him. Never change Fran!

Technically, I agree. But how many refs have you seen actually call an intentional like them when it’s not a hard foul and one team is up 25 late in the game?
I had a feeling at the first call, and was sure by the second, that the refs were trying to prevent the game from becoming a MMA match with a ball being thrown around occasionally.

Bowen looked better than most of their starters

Krikke and Iowa's other posts looked completely overmatched and overwhelmed on defense all game. That was the most surprising and impactful part of the game last night to me. All game they were letting King and BRE catch the ball right at the rim where they had to just make a basic move and lay it in. Those guys are big, strong, athletic, solid players but not offensive stars by any means. It is no wonder Edey put up 25 points in 24 minutes on 10 shots against them.

Bowen looked good, was able to drive on our defense, get to the basket and finish or draw a foul. He looked to me like Iowa's best player by a pretty good margin.

Unfortunately for Cyclone fans, I think there are two reasons why this is gonna be Fran's last season.

First, after Iowa completes its charade of a national search, Beth will be named the permanent AD. She's already shown she's the only person at Iowa with enough balls to do the dirty work of firing underperforming high profile coaches.

Second, as the basketball season continues, there are going to be many men's games at Carver where attendance is embarrassing, especially when contrasted to attendance at women's games.

That's because they were.

Let's face it, Tre & Big Rob are not on anyone's draft boards. But my lord, they were men playing middle schoolers.

Krikke is the kind of guy that dominates for UNI, he has some offensive skills. But he doesn't have the speed or size to be more than a role player at the P6 level. I am not really even sure who else plays the post for them based on last night. Freeman?

He typically is a starter but I guess Fran thought starting a slow Pg in his first start at Hilton was the adjustment we needed. Now that he has conceded the starting line-up needs a shake up I hope we can see one that patrick slides to the bench for Freeman

I was wondering how Edey didn't score 80 on them.

Unless Fran walks on his own he has at least next year.
