In memoriam of Brian Ferentz as Iowa's OC

Hey Gonzo... what do you think the chances are right now of KF being back at Iowa next year?

I really have the gut feeling that he's done. He's been SO emotional this season... gets choked up after nearly every game. And you could tell after BF was canned... he was not a happy camper at all with how that was handled by the prez and AD. He can't be much of a fan of Beth at all.

And them making the Championship game this year, combined with the fact it will become nearly impossible after this year for Iowa to ever get back to this game again... he could go out 'on top'.

I just think everything points to him being done. But he surely loves money... he's proven over his career how important money is to him... so maybe he hangs on for just that reason??
He is going to be back. From what I’ve heard he will be at Iowa for at least a few more years. I bet he gets one more contract extension.

Way too close to Woody Hayes to walk away. He's hanging for two more years.

Side question: Does an Iowa win tonight cost Goetz the full time gig? I get that the Iowa offense is a disaster but an 11-2 Big Ten Champion that plays in an NY6 game doesn't have an AD meddling in staff decisions...

It better not cost her the AD job... not firing BF is what should have cost her the job. She had no choice in this. Here are the updated Total Offenses in college FBS, out of 130 total teams. Iowa dead last by quite a large margin... and look at the other B1G teams they've beaten that are on there too. OMFG!

No such thing as a bad win. I'd take 10-2 regardless of how it happened every day and twice on Sunday...

Just watch. Kirk is gonna give Brian the same Assistant Coach of the Year award that he gave Doyle after Doyle put 13 of their players in the hospital.

Oh yeah... guarantee you that Brian is going to be walking home with some hardware from the post season awards banquet. The tears will be flowing at that occasion.

I'll give you that... but it doesn't mean anyone wants to watch any of it. If all of football was played like Iowa does.... I'd never watch the sport again.

Give me Oregon-Washington every day... or even that ISU-KSU game from last Saturday night. More entertainment and excitement in one game than Iowa will give you all year.

Watching Iowa on offense the last couple of years is like having a root canal, without novocaine, a prostate exam, minus any lube, all done at the same time time and then someone just coming up and kicking you right in the nads.

Iowa has no shot, it would be like turning on the history channel and watching a documentary on the Battle of Little Bighorn and thinking General Custer has a chance of making it out alive this time.

What's the point of having Beth be interim and then doing a search? She's got the support of the coaches and looks to be a good fit. Why waste the money?
Iowa, just like ISU has a policy in place that states all positions must be publicly posted for a minimum of seven days.

Second, it is VERY common at the three regent universities to name interims for roles. ISU currently has an interim VP of DEI, Director of Equal Opportunity, along with several others. The interim person is placed in the role to maintain continuity and keep the department running on a day-to-day basis. The role and authority of an interim depends on the university leadership. Some interims are nothing more than a placeholder (Bob Bowlsby at UNI), while others are given the green light to make wholesale changes.

Search committees happen all the time for roles reporting to the university President or Provost. At Iowa, Barta retired at the start of the academic year, so these committees with a strong academic presence on them are not in position to worry about the AD role. They are trying to start the academic year. Just and FYI, ISU currently has two active search committees functioning.

As mentioned in another post, the search committee does the leg work and presents the President with the top candidates. This eliminates any potential bias, preference, etc. Often, when the committee is reviewing resumes, they won't see the name of the person to help eliminate any gender bias. This process is taken seriously by the search committees to ensure all candidates a treated equally.

Iowa is a state institution, and anyone could submit a FOIA request to get information about the search.

A close game is way more entertaining than any blowout. Iowa played a lot of close games this year and every play mattered a lot. I like 1-0 baseball games and don’t mind low scoring football games.

Yes I understand all of that. It's also state funds and if she's a great fit seems like a waste of money. Especially if the fans and coaches already like her leadership. Doubly so if she's making decisions like firing Brian which is going to affect a hypothetical different AD replacement.

How about a close game where something actually happens?

This is BF's last game at Iowa (most likely anyway). Why not go out and throw the kitchen sink at Michigan and see what happens? Just chuck it downfield and hope to get some PI calls? Run a bunch of trick plays... flea flickers, reverses, etc?

I'll be shocked if that happens... but it would be interesting to see.

Iowa and ISU athletic departments are both self-sufficient, no state funds involved. The search committee is being paid for by the athletic department, not the university.

If they want Goetz, they will get Goetz. However, they have to be on the up and up, especially with roles reporting directly to the university President.

Hiring a high profile role at a public institution is not like hiring for the role in private industry. There are far more checks and balances that have to take place. See below:

  1. The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, has retained authority to hire persons to fill the following positions:
    1. The Secretary and Treasurer are appointed annually upon recommendation of the president
    2. The President, vice presidents and heads of major institutional units as determined by the Regents

Athletics is a major institutional unit.

Did nothing happen in the Nebraska game?

That was KF’s choice. Goetz has to meddle because she is BF’s boss and KF told BF to sign that stupid contract. KF made the choice for her to meddle. You can argue that KF broke state nepotism law.

Do you whip yourself and take a hammer to your nads also? Pretty similar to what you posted.

A close game does not make it entertaining though. A low scoring game may have an exciting ending, but if the game caused everyone to fall asleep, who is actually watching the ending?

The Army/Navy game is my favorite game to watch every year.
