I was hoping for more from our young squad playing on a neutral court. What I saw instead was a game that nearly mirrored what we saw in Des Moines against Drake. Close first quarter with ISU leading by 1. Disastrous second quarter where the sisters only score 4 points and the other team pulls away. Third quarter major comeback with the sisters closing within one. Fourth quarter fade and Vanderbilt cruises to a win.

That pretty much summarizes the game with one exception. The officiating. Wow...talk about inconsistency and some really bad calls and missed calls. Does that change the game? Maybe, but not likely the way the ladies were shooting. But geesh...the officiating was BAD.

Observations

There are a couple of things happening with this team that are really un-cyclone like. First is the free throw shooting. We've grown used to our sisters being nearly automatic and this crew is far from that. Shooting 50% just doesn't cut it. That rates in with some of the worst teams we see all season and can be very costly. Second, Turnovers. The first half was a turnover fest. Third, shooting by the guards. Joens and Belanger go a combined 3-15. All of those things together spell another loss and if it continues will lead to many more.

Free throws - the team is shooting well below previous ISU teams at 70% for the season and as mentioned a terrible 50% today. This has to change. Even worse is only getting to the line for 10 shots.

The Deep Ones - we know our guards can shoot. But wow the inconsistency is mind-boggling. Belanger goes from 50% at home to 16% today. Joens hitting about the same percentage and only 4 boards. That level of inconsistency has to change. Is the competition different? Yes. Is it Big 12 good...not even close.

Crooks - 14 points and 4 boards in 23 minutes. Some speculate she is getting breaks due to the rigors of college play. I don't buy that. We've seen a lot of players come into the college game and manage to play 5-6 minutes more per game easily. We need her out there. Why?

Natabou - I'm just not impressed with her so far. Way too many rebound attempts that are one hand taps that don't help us. No two handed authoritative rebounds. Scoring...not much of a threat at all. 2-5 today and that just isn't helping much. She manages 6 boards, but left several on the table. Keep hoping to see improvement here, but hasn't happened yet.

Brown - she's a stud. She finds ways to score, gets boards, and contributes in so many ways. In some ways I'd like to see her be set up more on the offensive end.

Diew - just call her streaky. She is either hot or cold and never in between. We need more consistency and sadly while her energy is there, she is either a mess or hotter than the sun. Today she fouls out and shoots 33% from the field.

The bench - I don't really consider Crooks a bench player even though she doesn't start. As for the rest of the crew there just isn't much in the way of offensive contributions here. Bristow and Jackson had considerable minutes (21 and 19) today and combined for 5 points. That doesn't cut it. Bristow does pull down a big 8 boards which led the team.

Stats - what if you saw these post game stats. Shooting percentage - both teams at 38%. Vandy makes ONE more shot. Three point shooting. Both teams shoot terrible (Vandy 25% to ISU at 19%). Rebounds - ISU leads 38-37. It all sounds like a close game doesn't it? But here are the killers...Vandy shoots six more free throws and makes TEN more than ISU. Turnovers - Vandy has only 8 to ISU's 16. Wow.

Scratching my head - I'm just not sure about a few things with this team. At home they are far different than on the road. OK, competition levels are different. But why the terrible 2nd quarter and why do they run out of gas late in the game (due to having to come back?)? It just seems they get taken out of the game in the second and I'm not sure why? Something is missing there. Maybe it's senior leadership. On that front Diew is as big a contributor to the bad second quarters as anyone.

In the end this game perfectly mirrored what we saw at Drake. Something very weird is happening in that second quarter that I find myself struggling to explain. They can make the comeback and somehow can't feed off the energy and the balloon bursts leading to another blowout loss.

What to look forward to? Syracuse annihilated Northern Iowa (who, gasp, is now 1-3) 71-54. ISU gets Syracuse (4-1) next and I can't see any difference in the competition level to what we saw today in Vandy. Unless a few things change in performance (such as getting to the line, making said free throws, cutting down turnovers, and having some people score the darn ball) it may be another tough one for the ladies. Coach Fen definitely has his job cut out for him with these youngsters. The skills are there it's just that the quilt needs sewn together.

Thanks Acoustimac. Very good analysis. This is a very new team and a very young team. It explains a lot of what we saw, but I think that given the level of talent, we expected more. But maybe our expectations were a bit too high. The loss of Emily Ryan cannot be overestimated. She has the ability to settle things down.

For what it is worth, I think the two big factors were youth and physicality of the game. Vandy started 2 graduates, 2 juniors and 1 sophomore. No freshmen. In terms of minutes, it's a bit different, as a freshman replaced Pissott, a sophomore. They're two big scorers were a graduate and a junior. The Cyclone started 2 seniors, 1 junior and 2 freshman. Of the 5 high scores, 3 were freshman. The same applies to playing time. We are having to depend on our freshman too much; we need more production from the upper classmen - and as fans, we need to understand that we are depending on freshman - ALOT! And with that comes frustration.

The bigger issue is the physicality of the game. It will take time for our youngsters to adjust to getting pushed around and beat up out there.

We had a heck of a recruiting class, but it only ranked 13th nationally. While that is impressive, we lost way too much talent in the offseason to really take full advantage of it. The good news is only one other Big 12 team was in the top 20 ranked recruiting classes and that was Texas at 12. But I think it is important to note that our top ranked recruit (Addy Brown) ranked 31; no other team with the 18 highest ranked recruiting classes had a "lower" ranked top recruit.

My expectations for this team this year were never real high but with the loss of Emily, my expectations dropped considerably; it depends so much on the team and especially the freshmen gel and adjust to the next level, and that CANNOT BE PREDICTED. It will be what it will be. With this young a team, and with this dependence on our freshman, as fans, we need to support this team. They need to know that we are behind them 100%. More analysis like we get from Acouistimac and less denigration and name calling would be appreciated by this fan.

The cool part of this team is the potential. They can be very good and there will also be days like this. When they hit the point of positive consistency things will get really interesting. First thing I want to see is our seniors playing like seniors.

We lack guards.

I watched the second half and that was almost by accident. I got wrapped up in the LSU game and then intrigued by the Kansas - Virginia Tech game that KU really should have won, but again officiating was quite inept. VT sure got some favorable calls especially at crucial times. I only recall seeing Crooks score one time, she must have done the bulk of the scoring on the 1st half. VU was just better. Tomorrow may well look the same. Young teams are just like a yo-yo.. Fun when they're clicking but agonizing when they're not.

I know some don't want to here this but it is evident that Crooks exerts a lot of energy to keep up with the rest of the team up and down the court. I have no doubt a year from now she'll be a 30 minute contributor but it's not going to happen over night.

Where are you encountering denigration and name calling aimed at players on the ISU WBB team?

There hasn't been much if any of that I've seen. Comments and opinions on a players capabilities, strengths and weaknesses isn't denigrating the player.

Plus it's WAY early in the season. Not sure at all at this point how we will be come conference play. I'll bet we are better in the second half, say February than in January. Reading too much into performance in a single game is just handwringing IMHO. Look at MBB freshman Momcilovic, really good game last night (L) and bad game the night before (W).

I believe BF would like her at 20-22 minutes this year and she's at like 18 now. She'll get there

I am actually impressed with how many minutes she has played which has been more than I thought she'd play and she has done really well in those minutes. I have zero complaints about how her minutes are being managed. She looks, so far, like what I thought maybe sophomore Crooks "might" be able to do on the court. She's likely been so effective to date precisely because of how they are managing her court time.

It will probably get lost in the rivalry and Clark hate come Dec. 6 but the matchup I am interested in is Crooks versus two types of P5 posts in one game. Iowa has been using an athletic Stuelke and a big body Goodman in the paint at various times. Both of their in the paint gals run the court well, don't think we want to get into a running game. W or L, that game is likely to be a good test and maybe a growth experience.

I'm afraid the term growth experience will be crucial in that game.

Will be interesting to see how many looks we get at those matchups. If Clark gets on a roll, the game will be over in a hurry And that changes the matchups. I really would like to see us compete in the game but it’s very early in the season and based on what I’ve seen from Iowa so far it’s going to be a tough go.
